In an effort to stop playing, I did wipe Hengband off my system, which means that Frono the promising Hobbit Archer died from a foe more deadly than the RNG ... Me!
So, here is a new post:
(CL22 : DL12)
Holy Wisdom, Batman! I mean, I had WIS raised 3 times randomly by CL8 and I've lost count since, but the last 2 have gone to WIS as well. Only 1 for CHR, the rest have been STR and 1 DEX. That and Thengel means I am wise beyond my years ;-)
Wise enough to wait before the orc quest? No way! That Elven Cloak is mine!
On 12.8.2005 13:02 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Haha, congrats, a new breakthrough in your Hengband life. Daemon priest, huh? Good luck with that (haven't really played Daemon at all myself).
And all the priests on the ladder are Fearless!
On 13.8.2005 07:39 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: (CL28 : DL 31)
Sloooooow going. Still waiting for some sort of armour of resistance, as my shield is costing me 1 attack. My wisdom is high, but magic missle is still my attack of choice. Like I said, sloooooow going.
That copy of Gorinnosho you see is the 7th high level spell book I have found, but none have been in my realm. Don't worry, my record of 56 high level spell books before getting a useful one is still very much out of reach ...
But I can dish out about 50 points of damage a round, so I am running away a lot ... We'll see. I may just get frustrated with this guy and throw in the towel :-(
On a positive note, I did find some nice out of depth dragon gloves with poison resistance :-)
On 13.8.2005 18:10 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: (CL30 : DL 31)
Well, Dorlis has a little more traction now. Shortly after my last post, the BM stocked some 38lb Full Plate armor of resistance. Had to buy it even though it severely encumbered me. From that point, 3 attacks was enough for things to pick up a bit, and as you would expect, armors of resistance have been coming rather quickly now.
Since things are taking so long to get going, I've turned on the Autoscummer, though at this depth, and without much detection, that can be quite risky. But atleast the game is more interesting. Got a nice randart bow as well :-)
I really need a decent weapon, and perhaps some stat potions. Of course, either one of the 3rd books would be welcome!
On 13.8.2005 20:03 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: (CL30 : DL31)
OK, now things are starting to look respectable. I had bought that Force Two Handed Sword a while back, but wasn't sure how good it was going to be. But 191hp of damage off 3 attacks ain't half bad! Certainly much better than 51hp on 3 attacks from Turmil.
Other news: I took the two gimme Acquirements into the Dragon's Lair (*Destruct* to make things quiet ...) and got a blessed weapon, and a burning weapon. The usual junk ;-)
I've been doing the town circuit looking for Agility. Finally settled on a +2 ring of dex ... necessary for the third attack with the sword.
Well, back to Angband for more levelling ...
On 13.8.2005 22:05 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: Just found a scroll of artifact creation!!!! Damn, I'm tempted to just use it ...
On 13.8.2005 22:27 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: !! Artifact Creation, at Dlvl 31!? WOW.. hehe, not going to wait for a Mace of Disruption or a Diamond Edge this time (btw, you can Bless artifacts, but you probably already knew that)?
I finally found a normal Mace of Disruption on Angband 97 (after finding 1 randart and 2 ego), but I'm not really regretting spending it on a Great Hammer instead.
Good luck with the second artifact (take a screenshot :)
On 13.8.2005 22:31 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: I'll probably wait for an Elven Cloak +4 to use it on. I'm tempted to enchant my Dragon Gloves right now, though :-)
But, being a Daemon priest, I can not bless weapons! Instead, I get Evocation as an ability at CL42 ... So I am rather limited in what I can wield. But, being a Craft priest, I think an ordinary non-artifact Mace of Disruption will do just fine later on ... There is a combo in the 4th Craft Spellbook ...
Which reminds me, 10 spell books and counting (4 Gorinnosho!!) ... sigh.
On 14.8.2005 00:24 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: (CL32 : DL 32)
Well, my long stint at DL32 is finally over. I think I have enough to move a bit deeper and face the DL38 quest. Speed is wanting, as are hitpoints, but I do have decent damage output and a fair number of resistances covered. Levitation is still required for the Cloning Pits, as is about 200 more hp, so that quest looms on the somewhat distant horizon. For the moment, I think I might push DL40 in hopes of getting some spell books ...
On 14.8.2005 01:15 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: (CL33 : DL60)
OK, now things are cooking. An AMHD dropped Demonthoughts as book #14. In the Dragon's Lair, getting your spellbook is inevitable, provided you can kill greater dragonkind. Demonthoughts' Devilish Eye allows for the Might and Ring of CON, so hitpoints have moved from 317 to 488. Respectable, but caution is still warranted (Notice the Staff of Healing and *Destruction* :-)
I'll work out here until my muscles are buff enough for the Cloning Pits. Still seeking my first Great Ice Wyrm ...
On 14.8.2005 01:19 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: Ooop ... 5 seconds later and there is the Note of Acting Master!!! You go, girl!!
On 14.8.2005 02:37 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: (CL35 : DL60)
Just completed the Cloning Pits. Not much of note, other than some standard pieces of armor. But I like the boots, and +5 base speed is oodles better than +1 ;-)
Back to the Dragon's Lair for more slaughter ...
On 14.8.2005 03:02 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote: Hey, Matthias, I'm really jealous of your character's damage output: 500hp for 37 mana is awesome. Me, I just got Plasma Ball which dishes out a (resistable) 134 hp for a mere 53 mana with a fail rate of 26%. Talk about opening a can of whoop a$$ ... Not!
Daemon does seem to be grossly overpriced for what you get ... but there are better spells later on ...

Patience ...
Also, some more CON, please ;-)

Boy, this character took a loooong time to get going, but I'm glad I stuck with her. Most dragons at DL60 are killable, with the exception of a few big-a-bad-a uniques, like Mycen, but I might even be able to take those (Hey, I took Ancalagon!).
But I wait for a good weapon. I mean, something like Ulmo, Soulsword, Wrath, Aeglos, Runespear, etc. Something I can use ;-)
In the meantime, this force weapon is performing nicely, provided I set things up so I only have to fight one significant monster at a time.

Played with very dangerous Sky Drakes as the above screen shot shows. I don't recommend this, but it is a good way to gain rings of speed. I got 2, both were pretty lame though. But I also got Crimson, and I'm happy with that :-)
BTW, all of my posts from now on will probably be in Demon form. In case anyone is wondering, I'm actually a Dunadan.

Back to the Dragon's Lair until I get better equipment. At +4 base speed, I'm just too slow, thow I plan to do some equipment shuffling when I get back to town (Gogo, Laputa, Crimson for Carlammas, Bard, Palantir). Nice Ring of Attacks +2 that I just can't resist wearing, despite the +9 speed ring at home. Perhaps I'll find Tulkas some day?
On 19.8.2005 04:18 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Whoa... you're wearing RoAttacks +2 over RoSpeed +9!?
Ok, assuming that you are at your hasted speed all the time (+7+10), that's 27 energy and 7 hits. At 100/27 game turns per action, you get 7 / (100/27) = 1.89 expected blows per game turn.
The other way, with (+16+10), 36 energy (or possibly 35, I forgot how the progression goes past 30) and 5 hits, translates to 5 / (100/35) = 1.75 expected blows per game turn.
Hm... looks like your intuition was right, blackreaver!
Though, if you run into dispelling monsters, you're fooked. ^^

Now shortly after this post I did make the suggested swaps (Crimson, Laputa) that brought my base speed to +10. With Haste and Demon form, I'm +23, which is enough to eek by on for the moment. However, Dispel Magic totally sucks. I mean, I completely can't handle any monster with this ability :-(
DL88 quest was Sauron, and he Dispel Magicked me on his first or second move at about an 80% clip ... sigh. Got a star off him once, but I probably took about 10,000hp of damage. The battles went like so:
[1] I cast my 8 prep spells.
[2] I then pass wall to Sauron who casts dispel magic. I either teleport, or cast pass wall in hopes I can just back away.
[3] Sauron double moves and takes me down to 200hp.
[4] I back away and rest. Sauron becomes unhurt.
Repeat :-)
After about 10 attempts at this, it became clear that he would kill me (eg. Double Mana Storm). At +10 speed after his dispel magic, a double move was almost guaranteed! (+4 base speed and I'd definitely be dead by now ;-) Gosh, I even struggled mightily with Biketal of fire ... sigh. This character still has a ways to go.
Currently, I am gingerly exploring DL90 in hopes of Hellfire Tome. I'll post if anything significant changes ...

I attached the Weaponmasters appraisal of my melee abilities as a screen shot. Looks about as good as I've ever seen on the percentages to hit. Damage could be improved (+3 attacks and Shiva's Avatar, maybe??)
But honestly, I'm puzzled by Wey's SP. I'm wearing 66.5lb of equipment, and you seem to be wearing less. Bizarre. The mace costs 55 mana for me, but I think it is well worth it. Perhaps if I had Thorin I would consider Ulmo again, but for the final battle, slay evil is required, and not much beats a 10d8 weapon.
Now the arena hasn't received much thought. Honestly, I'm just not that good in a big open room with a GWoP or a babble. I'm not shooting, and I have no healing, so the babble will just kill me in about 4 turns or so. The GWoP I might be able to do, provided I can get next to it with my vampiric mace. We'll see ...
On 20.8.2005 08:07 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Hm... IIRC the Great Hammer didn't cost me any SP, and Cambeleg has FA, so that shouldn't have affected it either... so somehow Dorlis has an extra 58 base SP over Wey (almost exactly 15%).
I wonder if this is 1) an undocumented effect of Demon-Lord transformation, 2) some effect of virtues, or 3) the difference between Heng 1.6.1 vs 1.6.2
BTW, is the lack of Sustains a problem for you at all? I'd imagine it's rather annoying not to be able to tell exactly how much your stats have dropped during Demon-Lord, so it could be a nasty surprise when you find WIS dropping from 18/*** to 18/20 when Demon-Lord drops. SP calculation
----
SP is also affected by your race.
Every 1 point of the racial modifier for the stat for spellcasting affects the base SP by 5% each.
If your spellcasting is INT based, the modifier will be +20% for a mindflayer, and -5% for a Klackon.
----
It seems that Archons are the best for priests and mindcrafters.
(And, if you're interested, I translated the detail for the spell 'Explode Pets' and I think I can offer.
- By the way, translating this kind of Japanese sentences into English was a bit of a challenge for me - you are not going to use words like "racial stat modifier" in the daily life!)

(CL50 : DL97)
At +30 base speed, I feel a little better about taking on those annoying Dispel Magic monsters. Brand came from the Norsa (now where is Feanor ;-) and I just found the +3 ring of attacks. I would feel better with Tulkas as my base hp are still way too low. It might not be obvious, but transforming into a Demon Lord just affects your Max HP, not your Current HP. I really hate to have to heal every time I transform ...
Still, many, many uniques to go, but now its time to start fighting all that I have been avoiding (except the Unicorn, of course!)

(I think it's ok though, because it isn't likely to make your game different: this is nothing similar to the Medusa spoiler for NetHack!)
Well, this is a somewhat shortened and snipped translation of the article for the spell, from the spoiler "Hellfire Tome - Introduction to Magic Realms of the Evil"
----
"Explode Pets"
Here are detailed characteristics of the spell.
- You can't have any pets left: this spell makes ALL your pets on the level explode, so if you have some pet that you don't want to lose, use a 'capture ball' first.
- Unique pets will flee and won't be 'exploded'
- Plasma based attack, so it does very little damage to those resist plasma.
- The damage is calculated as following
i base damage = the monster's max HP / 2
ii if (i) is bigger than 100 then the damage will be ((i)-100)/2+100
iii if (ii) is bigger than 400 then the damage will be ((ii)-400)/2+400
iv maximun damage point is 800 (when the monster's maxHP is higher than 4600)
sample
HP damage
200 100
500 250 >> (150/2)+100 = 175
1400 700 >> (600/2)+100 = 400
4600 2300 >> (2200/2)+100 = 1200 >> (800/2)+400 = 800
- And the center of the explosion is the pet, so actual maximun damage is 400
( (center damage(e.g. 800)+1) / (1+distance) )
- the radius of the explosion is calculated as 2+(the monster's level/20)
- This 'explosion' is regarded as the pet's last attack, so you can't gain exp, or kill uniques with this spell.
Note that you are vulnerable to the explosion, too.
This spell is really effective when you have some pets that can cast summoning spells, and make your target surrounded by mass of creatures.
Summon a demon, summon Ancient Dragons, summon Greater Undead are the spells that are likely to summon monsters with high HP.
Hopefully you can let them do chain-summoning and explode them in the end.
The drawback of this tactics is that it'll need so much of preparation.
Having enough time probably you could simply cast attack spells like "nether storm" or "bloody curse" directly on your opponent.

Having one heck of a time with Dispel Magic. I mean, Sauron must have gone 30 out of 50 moves Dispel Magic. I never got more than 2 consecutive rounds of attacks on him. Then finally, for some strange reason, I got 9 consecutive rounds of attacks on him, which was enough to kill him.
And he dropped the ring. I waited a long time for Tulkas, but now I think I will use the one ring. This means careful resting. I will need to be Demon form to avoid the Statue Effect. It also means that I need to step up the game a bit. Perhaps I will go for the Serpent early. I have the resources ... I'm just waiting to kill various uniques.

Went to Demon Lord and took him down 6 stars before my first Phase Door to safety, ignoring the 4 cyberdemons he summoned. Then I finished the job in lesser demon form. He was so hard before because Dispel Magic left me dangling in the low 700 hps, and one double move would kill me. With the one ring, my base hp are 924, so when he Dispelled Magic, I just kept fighting.
I'm going for the Serpent ...

Boy, the one ring made all the difference in the world!! The final battle was routine, with no close calls. Plenty of Healing was consumed, but only 1 *Healing* and one early zap from Lohengrin was required. Heck, at 884 hp of damage per round, I think the end result was obvious ;-)
Left numerous uniques, plenty of which were summoned during the final battle. But a couple of ugly TY_CURSES from the one ring got me moving despite the number of remaining uniques. I even had an ugly TY_CURSE when the Serpent was at 1 star, and about to be finished. Lack of care in any of these scenarios could have been deadly!
My take on the Daemon Priest? Good early offence, and nice transformation spells that will make for a good fighter. I dare say that Dorlis was a better fighter than some of the warriors on the ladder ;-) But, I think Life/Craft would be more powerful. Or perhaps a player with more intelligence than I could make use of the Explode Pets, etc. in Daemon. I must confess to not using Daemon offensively at all in the late game ...
But I am a warrior at heart, and this was an easy win ;-)
