That's one awesome staff for your purposes. You could stilll be using it at the end of the game.

How did you make it through Mirkwood, rescue 14 princesses, and only kill 386 enemies? And do it while level 19?

Your skill priorities should be:
#1 - Max out bow mastery
#2 - Max out Prayer (finding the relic pieces will help a lot here)
#3 - Max out Archery
#4 - (big gap down) then generally add points to combat, magic, magic device, and maybe stealth, but don't expect to get any of them terribly high. Combat should be the highest, as your breakpoints for piercing shots come every 10 points - 20,30,40,50. Make sure to get it to at least 20, and really 30 (if doable) is better. 40 or 50 is even better, but you probably won't have the skill points.

As for not killing much, its easy with a wood elf. High prayer means you can see the princess immediately. You go through the trees to the princess, killing anything there with arrows. Then leave. The only real danger are packs of air hounds - I usually leave the level if they get on top of me

Killing power isn't a problem with the randart arrows I've got, plus a few good exploding arrows with something like nether on the blast.

So far I've had it very easy in that sense. My main concern is that I've done the Barrowdowns and Mirkwood, and only got a couple of FF quests, none of which have given me magic. So now I've got to go to Mordor, which is harder anyway, and in which wood elvish tree walking is not much use

I'll do the Old Forest and Rhun before that though, again just to make best use of the tree walking ability, and maybe get some markets of interest

Piercing is something you can turn on or off. Its a special ability you gain when your skill in archery is high enough. Higher archery increases the chance of each shot piercing, and higher combat increases the maximum number of targets a shot can hit. With combat<10, piercing does nothing. With combat >20, then you can hit 2 targets, 3 at 30, etc. A good bow and good ammo combined with combat at 50 means you can hit up to 5 targets per shot. That's awesome, but even 2 or 3 is still pretty good.

Lack of magic skill might not have been as big a problem in the late-game as you might guess, because the Eru-based detection spells are cast with piety, not spell points, and you can gain Eru piety by just walking about so its easy to build a big stockpile.

Well, its too bad about this guy, but better luck with the next one.
