Shotguns are great. Ammo scarcity is a bit of an issue and Yuri now buys literally all of the shotgun ammo of any sort that shows up in the shops, and he still has to spend a fair amount of time hanging around on level 1 killing chickens, waiting for more ammo to be available in the shops. Thinking about it, it probably balances the power of the shotgun rather nicely. Still, Yuri dreams of finding a shotgun ammo generator one day.
His billy club is nice, but by far the most valuable item he's found is that amulet of *regeneration*. In fact, that amulet, and amulets of regeneration might be too powerful.
Melee is clearly his secondary attack, but without the amulet, I wouldn't even take on a single 9 in melee, because it would take 5-10 CCW potions to heal the damage taken. With the amulet, he can stand in a hallway and pound on 8s and 9s, regenerating so fast that he can take out quite a few (say 6 or 8)before needing to retreat and heal.
On 19.9.2004 01:18 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Made great strides, more than tripling his exp thanks to a quest for Martians. Managed to get fire resist to 93 and poison resist to 90 before doing it, which turned out to be perfect timing.
First found a full pit with mixed Martians, Walkers, Missle Walkers, and a Cannister Walker. Those darn Missle Walkers have taken on the mantle of nastiest monster I've encountered so far. The progression has gone something like Large Dog Man-Drunken Master-Outcast Snakeman-One Eyed Jack-Queen of Hearts-Martian Missle Walker.
Managed to get all but one of the Martians needed for the quest, but the Missle walkers chased Yuri back to town for more ammo. Fortunately, he was able to come back and the one more he needed. It was also in a pit, but a pit of just Walkers and Martians. Yuri killed just about all of the Walkers and a few of the Martians before moving on.
Autoscum has meant a vault on nearly every level and Yuri makes a solid effort on almost all of them, but he hasn't added any new equipment in a while. A little more ammo would be nice, but otherwise all is well.
Well, an Etheric Automaton shifted 100 poits of AG into EGO. Really annoying, but he should still be ok.
On 21.9.2004 06:32 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Slowly diving, but Yuri's ammo supply has seriously lagged the increasing difficulty of the monsters. Most monsters can survive a few hits from shotgun slugs before going down (to say nothing of trying to kill them with buckshot), and there just aren't that many slugs available. He can still handle most things one on one in melee thanks to his regeneration and the rings of slaying and damage he picked up, but he can be overwhelmed pretty easily by a big rush of Jaguar men or Prides, so he spends a lot of time carefully setting up battles and then teleporting away once too many monsters wake up.
He was crusing along pretty well (successfully completed the first 16 quests in a row, one for each level, all on difficult) and then totally hit a wall when he got up to level 34 or so. He failed a quest for Trumps (which was horrible. they all had escorts. One had a suicide king, a black mariah, a half dozen aces and a half dozen mixed 10s and 9s just as its escort. Managed to get all but 2, but had to go back to town for more CCW and the quest failed while restocking. The next quest was for something tough with escorts (Gluttonies, maybe) and Yuri just wasn't up to it. Been downhill since then.
On 25.9.2004 07:01 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: I decided Yuri's problem was that I was diving too quickly. Since you can't reset recall depths (that I know of), the easiest thing to do was to have Yuri do a series of quick dives starting from town.
Each time, he'd quickly charge up the stairs, grabbing money or items that were on the way to the next stairs, really only stopping for vaults, and then recalling when his pack was full of good stuff which usually happened somewhere between levels 36 and 32. Got something useful and enough money to buy a couple skill points almost every time. First, he got the gloves (which are awesome, +6 speed and can activate for haste, plus a few other abilities), and then he bought his new shotgun from the black market after the second trip. Those were the biggest finds, but he also managed smaller upgrades, plus has a bunch of interesting stuff in his house. The strangest thing was the rate at which he found recall scrolls. After a while, Yuri started selling dozens of recall scrolls to the scribe, because he just didn't need to carry 65, while constantly finding more.
Anyway, now he's back up to level 22, going after those Priestesses. I'm optimistic about his chances, but he has to keep fleeing from packs of Lusts and Angers. They aren't really that dangerous unless they catch him in a room and surround him, but they take resources to kill. If he shoots them, they each take 3-4 shots to kill, and if he melees them, he can kill them, but the Lusts drain exp and Ego and the Angers summon Byakhee which can drain a bunch of stats, so he ends up down a level and with his stats reduced. Easier to just teleport away. Getting hold life and more stat sustains should probably be his next equipment objective.
On 27.9.2004 09:52 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: That series of quick dives seems to have done the trick. I think that's mostly thanks to those gloves. Anyway, Yuri is back rolling again and has successfully completed his last 3 quests. Great exp up at level 20 and he's finding books again which is good for the skill points, especially since he's only getting 1 or 2 per level gain now.
Recently found that ring of Celerity, so he's at speed +18, and is usually hasted to +28 in big battles. That plus finding many more shotgun slugs and finally having reasonably good resists has made life much easier. He just made it through a quest for Morois and crushed General Featherstone and the Jabberwock without breaking a sweat.
I think Yuri has the middle game under control, which is the first time I can say that about one of my chararcters in this game. Of course, he'll probably be reduced to cinders as soon as he hits the end game, but at least he's steadily making progress.
On 27.9.2004 10:06 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: He's still using that billy club, too. Amazing. Yuri mugged poor Nellie Bly in town and she dropped it. While I was very pleased to see it, it never occured to me at the time that he'd still be using it at level 38.
On 27.9.2004 15:47 fuforah@yahoo.com wrote: With my most recent Steam winner, I used a Short Sword of Eternity 1d7|1 (+10,+3) (+10 to speed) that I found on dl 24 or so. Pretty weak damage for a melee character. Fu Manchu (end boss) dropped the next weapon that could compete. Good weapons are few and far between in Steam.
You'll probably want three swap weapons by the endgame, so you can switch when a monster resists the damage type (piercing, edged, blunt).
Keep an eye out for Martian weapons for a swap (just be sure to have remove curse handy). You will need them vs. teleporting mobs.
Good luck.
On 28.9.2004 06:16 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Yuri is continuing to march along. He also found his first two high grade artifacts in the shotgun and Tesla's light. Both are great, but the penalties are pretty substantial.
With the shotgun, Yuri is definitely willing to suck it up. With the light, I'm still deciding. Getting +5 speed from the light slot is huge, and on the whole, the resist gains are substantial. On the downside, -10 to 3 stats and -75% to his electrical resist, along with the other problems, are hard to stomache. We'll see.
Even better, a apparatus of shotgun ammo generation finally showed up in the black market! Yuri bought it and has been very happy. Sure, he can run out of ammo on a trip (I'm not taking it on anything but trips to level 50 until Yuri gets a spare), but every trip can now start with a full load of slugs! Life is good for Yuri.
On 29.9.2004 04:40 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: I knew this day would come eventually. Found the amulet of John Dee in a vault on 18. Its arguably the best amulet in the game, yet the amulet of *regeneration* is so central to Yuri's gameplan that I'm not sure the swap is worthwhile. Plus, while Yuri continues to have things under control (found a second shotgun ammo generator! He can carry one around now!), it wouldn't take a big slip for something to totally obliterate him. Decisions, decisions.
On 29.9.2004 14:28 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: My mistake. He found the amulet on level 16, not 18.
Yuri resolved the problem of dealing with life/stat drainers by doing two things. First, he buys all the potions of life restore that come along and just carries them around. Lusts aren't a problem to kill in melee as long as the exp drain damage can be fixed.
Second, his stats are now hgh enough that he can lose 100 points off each and not have it be a serious problem. As such, stat drainers are no longer a problem.
On 2.10.2004 06:59 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Those Nazi tanks can do some damage. Fortunately, it took a lot to wake them up, so Yuri was able kill almost all of them one at a time.
With two to go, he almost bought it when, rather than use up the ammo fighting through a big group of prides and gluttonies, I decided that he'd teleport away, hoping to land near the remaining tanks.
Instead, he landed right in the middle of a construct pit. He probably would have been insta-killed, except that something fired an attack that teleported everything away, including Yuri. Whew.
Things are running pretty smoothly. The uniques are all going down without too much trouble. The jubjub bird took an impressive amount of damage to kill, but with Yuri at speed +31 and with 8 shots/round, it never had a chance at getting into melee range.
I thought the shotgun was overpowered in the early game, and I think its still overpowered in the late game. Only the very toughest uniques and monsters can survive a full round of Yuri shooting at them, even if he's using unenchanted or even cursed ammo. Dracula went down in a single round and Yuri was using (-6, -5) cursed shotgun shells (it was all he had). That just doesn't seem right.
That's a small quibble, though. Steamband has been great fun to play. The atmosphere and equipment has been terrific, as are the monsters and uniques. Nicely in period and in synch with the theme.
Its also fun playing a 'band with no spoiler available. Extremely refreshing. No looking monsters up on Angband.ook and specially equipping acid weapons to deal with the right monsters. I wonder what that monster does? The only way to find out is to go attack it.
On 2.10.2004 07:25 utterly_vile@hotmail.com wrote: Fight on! You're well on your way to being the first non uberrace to win 0.38.
From my experience, the automata/steam mecha are definitely overpowered. I'm hoping next time that I start a character I'll have a little bit more patience to play a "regular" race ;p
/could not survive with a regular race/rogue
On 2.10.2004 21:39 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Still going. Leveling really fast thanks to giant cockroaches, T. Rexs, and Nazi Secret Service.
On 3.10.2004 08:12 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Made level 50 thanks to running into T. Rex/Giant Cockroach pits on 3 consecutive levels and Yuri's recent habit (acquired after finding his 4th shotgun ammo generator) of carrying vast amounts of ammo around with him. His load in the dump is actually a bit light for him since he's carrying less than 300 shells.
Now that he's level 50 and, though I have no idea what to expect, I suspect his gear is Fu Manchu-worthy, he's not going to bother killing the quest monsters anymore. The skill points are nice, but he doesn't really need them anymore, and more often than not he'll get trousers of inviolability to poison instead.
He'll keep taking the quests, just in case a unique shows up so he can keep knocking them off, but that's really it.
Since he can still use 'p' abilities with the axe, it would have long since taken over as his primary weapon, except that the dagger is his only source of true see invisible. He's got beta eyes installed (only got around to the steamware VERY late in the game, its great. Wish I had found it earlier.), but they don't help against invisible undead.
His next big push should end in the battle vs Fu Manchu. I'm curious to see how Yuri stacks up against him. More good ammo would help his chances.
On 3.10.2004 15:33 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: Got him!
As others have noted, the battle with Fu Manchu was a bit anti-climactic. After he stepped into LOS, Fu got exactly one move before he died, and he squandered it by taking a step forward. After finding the ring of field generation, hasted, Yuri was at speed +45 (could have gotten it up to +62 with Tesla's stuff, but didn't feel like taking on the penalties) and, as I've noted before, with 8 shots/round, each doing 550+ even wtihout criticals, nothing lasts very long. Jack the Ripper was the only late game unique who really gave me a scare, because Yuri was only +31 at the time, and Jack was hasted to +40 and popped out of a vault right next to him. The early game is MUCH harder than the late game.
Almost got all the uniques, I think. Only got 8 of the 10 elememental lords, but every other unique he encountered is dead.
That was a really nice game. Thanks to the power that be for putting it together.
Also thank you to fuforah and utterly_vile for your advice and encouragement. It was much appreciated.
Yea for the first human winner!
On 6.10.2004 05:49 utterly_vile@hotmail.com wrote: Woo, congratulations!
On 25.11.2005 06:33 wrote: Wow, you were the first human race victor? Awesome, and congratulations! You documented your experiences well, and I think I really learned a lot from reading them... Steamband is really refreshing, isn't it? And, Regeneration is vital to any character, I think... It really trumps most other resists or factors, and if you combine it with the Ring of Field Generation, and perhaps some of the items of Captain Nemo, you've got a very tough character. Anyway, good job!
