It took a long time to finally get a winner with the lazy android/berserker combo. This combo is nice in that it makes for a quick beginning to your game, but when it comes to chain-summoning Sky Drakes, Great Wyrms of Space-Time, and especially Great Wyrms of Power, I've lost more than half a dozen promising level 50 characters. Having no teleport, relying entirely on your hit points when potions of *Healing* and Life seem particularly rare, it's quite easy to get overwhelmed deep in the game in battles like these. And never mind the potions you need to beat the Unicorn, or the Serpent, or some of the other nasty deep uniques. I think if one is more patient than I, winning with this class might not be so dangerously
difficult, if you make sure to stockpile *Healing* and retreat back to safer depths when your pile runs out. But for me, I'm always fighting or diving with my last 2 or 3.

Highlight of this game was finally beating one of the lazy artifact guardians, the Unicorn of Order. I've learned from previous failed attempts that it is critical to stick to the blinking Unicorn like glue, otherwise you'll simply be overwhelmed by his chain summoning (by chain, I mean his tendency to summon things that can summon other things, ad infinitum). Also, I stopped wearing anti-teleport stuff, since getting teleported away is often a very nice reprieve for this class. Plus you occasionally get the prompt to follow a teleporting monster if you have a random-teleport inducing item like the Terror Mask. I disable its random teleport feature (perhaps not a smart move,
as it could occur at an opportune time and you are always prompted to use it, unless it's cursed) but I just don't have the patience to deal with the constant y/n prompt. Anyway,
I managed to hang pretty tight to the Unicorn, didn't get overwhelmed by its summons, and finished it off. Still had a life and a few *Healing* potions left. Got the Yumi, which was actually a *downgrade* in speed (+7) from Brand (+10), but its other features allowed me to shuffle my equipment a bit.

That's the other nasty thing about the Android--unless you're fortunate enough to find Power Dragon Scale Mail (which I have a couple times, in previous attempts), you're always limited by certain arrangements of kit, even more so than just regular resistance juggling. Some items you *must* have just for their level gaining value, even though resistance-wise there might be something else more useful.

Another nice first for this guy was finding Slayer. I don't recall ever coming across it with a melee using character, and I've had at least 10-12 failed 50th level attempts with this lazy class combo. Wielding it along with Stormbringer when fighting human-type monsters was a treat. Sauron and Oberon didn't even cost me a Healing potion.

This character also had a great deal of speed, but in this game, it really is a requirement for an all-out melee win. I think with a speed potion I was something like +50.

Never found any real high damage dealing weapons, like Chainsword, or Vorpal Blade, or even Ringil (though its damage would be
comparable to what I was wielding). Humorously enough, I used Sting for almost the whole game as my secondary weapon, because of its resist light ability, which I just didn't have anywhere else in my equipment. Finally was able to juggle resist light from some other source, and swapped Sting out for Fundin's ball-and-chain, which had a nice little speed boost to it. Slayer came along somewhere in the 4000s, I think. Before that it was Fundin's weapon & Sting as my main attack combo.

Had a huge battle at 4950 which cost me almost my whole store of *Healing* and Life, fighting the Tarrasque, the Cyberdemon Lord, Loki, Surtur, Jaws of Thirst, and a few others I'm forgetting all at once. Ancient dragons and cyberdemons were everywhere. When the rubble cleared, I was practically without any heals (I was down to 1 *Healing*, 1 Healing, and 2 Life),
but I knew I'd destroyed just about all of the main nasty uniques prior to the Serpent. As it was nearing 6 in the morning (I have a tendency to lose track of time when I'm really into a character), and my girlfriend was hinting I really ought to get some sleep, I decided to just take a risk and face the Serpent anyway.

This kind of thinking is pretty much why 12 other lazy android berserkers have failed before Slothboy. In actuality, I had never faced the Serpent with one of them. One had died with possibly more speed than this guy, at 4950' fighting the Unicorn.

So I plunged into the depths anyway, and faced the Serpent. I tried digging an anti-summoning corridor, which the Serpent promptly razed with a nice blast of disintegration. Fortunately the Unicorn had been tentative about using this attack in the beginning of our battle, which accounted for my getting a nice head start on his health for defeating him.

The Serpent, always a gracious host, decided to invite four or five Cyberdemons to the party. These game throughout our battle, but there was a point where it was 4 of them and the Serpent beating on me at once.

Which reminds me, I did have a earlier close call against Gabriel, his escorts, and some Balance/Law/Chaos Wyrms that he summoned, that dropped me to 9 hit points.
Did I mention how easily it is to lose one
of these characters, in spite of all your damaging dealing and speed?

Anyway, I am meleeing all these guys to death. The Serpent was kind earlier in the battle by summoning some Guardians to help him from other dungeons. Great Cthulu did not make an appearance. Morgoth (not a Guardian, but definitely a threat) also did not get summoned, and I think it's because of this that I owe even having a smidgeon chance to win the game, given my low stock of heals in this fight.

So I'm beating on the Serpent, getting blasted by rockets from the Cyberdemon bridge-club that gets invited to attend, and I use one of my 2 potions of Life. Beating continues, 2nd potion gets used. Somewhere along the way I used the Healing too. I was down to 1 *Healing*,
and 1000 hit points doesn't go too far in a battle like this. The Serpent was down to 2 stars. Beat on him, used the last *Healing*,
and then prayed.

Sloth persevered! Never thought I'd ever say that. Anyway, the Serpent went down, my hit points were getting low (well under half), and another Cyberdemon (the last one) rounded the corner of some rubble. I figured this would be a fitting way to die. Finally beat the Serpent and then a rocket smears me against a wall before I make a character dump. Well, fortunately the Cyberdemon didn't use its nastiest attack, and I finished him and a stray harmless unique nearby. Then picked up the winning gear, went to down, and wallah,
retired from the curse of desperately seeking a lazy android berserker win.

Only negatives were not facing the other two lazy artifact guardians, but really, it was 6 a.m. already and I was quite tired of playing this class. So retirement it was.

One other highlight: total playing time for this guy was around 13 hours of game time. Definitely my fastest win.

Time for another long *band break. Hopefully something fun to play crops up
over the next few months.

Adam,

Congratulations yet again on your tremendous palmares.

I was just wondering why you wore "Great Icefield" instead of Fingolfin...? From what I can tell from the resistance chart, all the resists granted by the gloves were redundant, so the +10, +10 from Fingolfin would perhaps have been a better choice.

Not that it mattered :)

Best,

Victor

Thanks Victor.

I'm honestly not 100% sure--perhaps those gloves gave me the experience boost I needed, moreso than Fingolfin? You are right,
from the resistance chart, it doesn't look like it was helping me with
my current kit. Then again, I did shuffle some items just for the Serpent fight, so perhaps my ordinary kit required it, and I might have just made a mistake and not made that switch, especially given how late it was. Though the thought of doing the extra 150 or so damage a round with Fingolfin would have made the battle a tad bit easier.

Couple other things I forgot to mention: normally I always play with Preserve off. I guess I must have forgotten to fix this birth option, because by the time I was down to 4000 ft. I had caught on to the fact that artifacts that I discarded kept showing up again. At first I'd simply thought this a bug, but realized later I was playing in that mode. Once I realized this, I was a little more carefree leaving a few levels than I would be with my non-preserve characters, which definitely aided me in achieving the win. All my previous attempts were with preserve off, and for a berserker with no teleport, this really makes a huge difference. So it's somewhat of a stain on the quality of the win, though I really didn't abuse it, save a couple early
departures in the last few levels, which, had the level read as "non-special," I'd have done the same with preserve off.

Another thing I forgot to mention was this is a compilation of the
latest source from the Hengband Sourceforge site. While there hasn't
been a main update since January, the code has had plenty of tweaking since the last release. One noteworthy game-play change is level feelings are dynamic--as you find the items, or kill OOD monsters, the feeling becomes less "interesting." This allows for a little less time wasting on a level. There are also a few new artifacts, but
nothing worth mentioning.

Interesting site, it is well written. Registration not so was pleasant, and with scripts of a problem. Let's vary references, or banners. Write, how solve.
