She retrieved artifacts Narthanc, Barukkheled (in use) and Thalkettoth (in use), heap of nice egos like Execut's Sword 4d5 +14, elvenkind scale mail with disease random resist, gondolin dagger and ring of sustain all. She teleported away Queen Ant, Medusa the Gorgon, Chaos drake, Ulfang the Black, Ancient silver dragon and Dread. She even managed to kill Nar the dwarf.

Then the charges in teleport other wand was used. She opened some more cells, but when chaos mold promptly breathed on her after she opened its cell, she teleported out and recalled. She didn't examined other monsters too closely, with noticable exception of Smaug the Golden in top right corner, and Uvatha the Horseman in right end of third row.

I've never seen one that early, though - the lowest I've seen was at 1500ft.
It probably contained many more artifacts so you are lucky you have preserve on ;-)

so you want to beat morgoth, eh? I beat him with angel warrior, but I have beaten V with a ranger. here is my advice...

1. you want to use bow/arrows. I realize ey melee has very strong damage from the way slays work, but...

rangers get such excellent criticals, AND having 4 shouts/round allows you to fight very fast uniques with little danger, as they will never, ever get a double move, and even if they summon, its unlikely for a summon and morgoth to get moves in same round.

so, stockpile slay evil seekers with high dmg bonuses. once you have 4-5 good piles of 20+ arrows you are ready. pick the best 4 piles. in vanilla I took 3 and ran out toward the end, even collecting arrows.

2. use ringil!

3. you have enough potions. you could use some more mass geno and rune of prot. and a source of *destruction*. if you want to do sea of runes, assuming you create your sea in the corner of a level, you will need at least 11 scrolls for perfection.

4. it might be worth scumming for bard, whether that means scumming dragons or looking for a GV. you gotta be efficient as possible with your arrows vs morgoth.

5. after putting on ringil, I would wear soulkeeper, colluin, and gladiators. as long as soulkeeper doesnt give you too big a to_hit penalty -- does it? I think getting no_stun and the extra attack from gladiators is worth it. plus you gain some nice activations.

6. amulet 'heartstone' in place of sustanence. morgoth should not get in melee range anyway, and if he does, soulkeeper sustains CON and potions of life restore other stats. perhaps carry some mushrooms of restoring with you. the +health from heartstone, and its activation, are very nice.

On 30.9.2002 06:05 peace.quiet@worldnet.att.net wrote:
oh forgot about the actual fight..

healing potions or armor activations when convenient and safe, ie health above 700hp, speed above 30.

*healing* potions below 650 hp (my preference, at least)

life potions saved as absolute last resort, for instance when stats get drained or you run out of *healing*. I dont think I've ever had to use one in a morgoth fight...

'level-scum' until you're near a corner... then start setting up your scrolls (if youre sure he is on the level, I forget how ey is). its nice to have a pretty long distance to shoot, ie a big wide open room where your sea of runes is setup

teleport him away as soon as he is in sight if your runes arent ready

tele_away if he gets next to any of your runes

tele_away any uniques summonned that could possibly be a threat

geno/mass geno the rest. (if he even summons)

collect arrows and use armor activations to heal while he is teleported away

the last fight should actually be pretty boring. nothing to do that you probably haven't figured out already. I would try and kill the last few really nasty uniques first, just in case he gets to summon them. things that can manastorm, summon or breathe big.

good luck! --Brian

So,

Morgy huh...

Do you know how many things Morgy can throw at you ? 2 things : mana and darkness, so you should not care about other resist in the final fight.

Be fast, but dont get obsessed with it,get some more scrolls of mass genocide, I had to use 8.

Use an alternative for the amulet of Sustenance, there are some artefact that do the same and more.

And I would really really wear the crown !

Many thanks for your comments! They were really helpfull.

No way I would wear Soulkeeper - it bumps my failrates to 31%. Too much. I also sold Colluin earlier, so no way I can count with it. I tried kit suggested by Spec, with exception of Sustain All ring instead of speed ring, it looks good. Bad news is confusion resistance at 38%, I hope it will not prove critical. Hit points raised by another 150. I'll try few levels in dungeon to get feel of it.

failrates? what are you going to be casting in the final fight? :) resistance and haste? can use potions. our styles of play probably just differ. post a "pre-morgoth" dump if you can so we can all watch in anticipation! I'd still be sure to keep all important resists covered during the fight, in case you have to melee him, and/or he ends up summonning nasties. ideally you would only need dark/mana resist but.... things can go wrong, or other monsters might wander in midfight.

Killed Tarrasque and Vecna. Tarrasque was easy, as I have fire and acid immunities. Two mana bolts followed by mana storm were nasty, got me down to red hit points (I have 40% limit). Vecna was easier, teleportation was a bit flustrating but finally I shooted him.

Sauron is finally dead! He was easy, didn't brought me down to "red" numbers, but his habit to teleport away was unpleasant. Now I'll got to 5000'. Wish me luck. I changed helmet, took Fallen Star instead of Dor-Lomin, because of mana resist. But I will miss ESP. I think I'll swap them on the go. Have I enough healing/geno/etc? I'll go to sleep now, I can't take such important fight while tired.

On 28.10.2002 00:08 peace.quiet@worldnet.att.net wrote:
your kit looks good, but two comments:

I would have many more slay evil arrows, you will need them.

if you plan on meleeing morgoth, which looks likely, you need higher AC -- enchant all your armors up to +9/+10 and perhaps put on soulkeeper. also notice that without dor-lomin, you do not have enough dex and lose a blow when using ringil. do *resistance* potions grant mana resist? I forget..

how about the Time DSM + arkenstone + Feanor instead of mhdsm + hermes + lantern? you would gain much AC.

you seem to have enough scrolls/potions. perhaps scum the BM for more regular healing potons. good luck!

I found *single* pack of slay evil seekers in the whole game. Otherwise I would try runes tactic. I'll consider your other advices.

well, perhaps try regular slay evil arrows. seeker isn't that important. I just keep on suggesting arrows for two reasons:

1. sea of runes + range attack is the safest way to beat morgoth in almost any variant. for both anti summon, lack of his melee, and multiple shots/round makes it easy to pick a time to heal.

2. in ey, rangers get such huge critical dmg from archery.

but really you have a good kit and gear selection to beat him in melee as it looks will be needed.

Yes yes yes yes I did it! Finally, after years of playing. I spent more than
four months on this character. Last fight was really scary as I runned out of
Healing, *Healing* and Life with Morgoth at two stars. Spell of Absorb Hit
saved my life.

Final fight was scary. I started with bow and sea of runes, but I had only
10 arrows with me. I got two stars from Morgoth before I runned out of
arrows. I meleed him in the corner of level, healing as needed. He summoned
remaining uniques, which I teleported away. Regular summons wasn't threat as
I had three elemental immunities. Scary moment came when I runned out of
Healing, *Healing* and Life potions, Morgoth at two stars. I must thank to
Absorb Hit spell. I recasted it every turn, once in eternity when Morgoth
didn't hitted me or manastormed, I whacked him. I had to teleport him away
once and rest up. I burned some 15 *Healing* and 7 Life potions. Haven't
used any Genocide in this fight.

I was playing slowly, completely clearing every level. Since 3000' nothing
could stop me and I was clearing every depth only once. Only dangerous
creatures were packs of Mummy Kings. I was not able to kill Shrike.

As for equipment - I made only one equipment change for Morgoth, I used
Fallen Star instead of Dor-Lomin for mana resist. I got Ringil early
(2550'), used it as only weapon ever since. My bow was Belthronding, I never
found Bard. I wasn't using archery much, in fact I wasn't using it at all
since 2000'. Melee with Ringil is just much more effective, even for ranger.
Two elven rings of power, what more can I wish? Heartstone amulet is there
to boost my hitpoints. Lantern of Time Reduction was obvious choice of light
source since I found it. Time resist is just so useful. MHDSM came latest to
my kit, it solved some resistance holes. I tried many gauntlets and I
settled with Gladiators. I got Feanor from quest, later I got Hermes from
quest, which solved mine speed problems. Current quests are flawed in way,
that they give the player all speed items around 2500'. Made for much easier
game.

And that's pretty much it. I'll take a break from EyAngband now (it's still
my favourite variant!) and try Vanilla or Dr or Un...
