However, I'd advise avoiding shields - they are very heavy for the armor they provide.

Also, enchant your armors if scrolls are available. With low strength, you need to pack as much armor as you can in as little weight as possible.

I had gotten greedy: I was in a "very good" level with a small vault, and instead of recalling when I lost my teleport staff and fourth spell books, I kept on exploring. I encountered a Manticore, which was too fast for me, and I had so few hit points that its missles were reaming me. Instead of teleporting it away, I teleported, right next to a bunch of imps, who applied the coup de grace.
