Zangband 2.4.0, compiled on Linux. I wanted to go back to the game I played about 20 years ago (unfinished business).
Some noteworthy points:
* Started life as a Male Spectre.
* Lucky early speed items (Rod, Ring), and Ringil (+10 speed) at about level 60. Brand did not drop x-bow but I found it later.
* Low-level damage mostly from Magic Missle, Holy Orb. Mid-level from Dispel Evil. High-level from Divine Intervention.
* High-level Chaos damage was not effective, due to 29% minimum fail rate on Mana Storm. Alter Reality, Doom Bolt, and Teleport Self at 0% fail were very useful. However, I probably would choose Life/Death if playing Priest again.
* No Blessings of the Grail until about level 85, despite seeing about 7 Necronomicons by that time. Eventually it dropped from Hypnos.
* I wanted better melee, so I went through a few iterations of Polymorph Self, until settling on Nibelung + Living Computer (+4WIS).
* Three quest bosses were a pain: Nodens (level 88 quest), Destroyer (level 92 quest), Unicorn of Order (level 94 quest). This is because I didn't have good enough attack spells against good / neutral uniques. I managed to melee the Destroyer down eventually, but Nodens healed too quickly and Unicorn could not be melee'd effectively.
* I had fire immunity from Ring of Power (Narya) or a random artifact helm. I chose the latter, because otherwise I would have dropped 11 speed.
* Killed all uniques except Nodens, Unicorn. It was actually fortunate that these two were quests because otherwise the Serpent could have summoned them.
* Sustains for final fight came from Robe of Permanence.
* Probably spent a bit too much time farming consumables. I went in to level 100 with 27 potions of Restore Mana, 12 scrolls of Mass Genocide (for summoned U, D non-uniques), 10 potions of life.
* Serpent fight was not really a problem at all. Repeated Divine Intervention (about 25 times), using about 6 Restore Mana pots. Fundin Bluecloak (Friendly) was summoned by the boss, and survived! Killed Morgoth the same way, shortly after.
