Things are actually going pretty well... now that I have found free action. Man, was the RNG stingy on that front. I found myself getting really nervous wandering around 1900' as a not-so-stealthy dwarf without FA, so I scrutinized the shops and refreshed them a few times. And when that didn't work, I climbed to 1100' in search of a ring of free action. About a dozen levels later, I finally found the short sword Defender I am currently equipping (with a nice slay dragon swap). Stingy rat bastard RNG.

Also, I think artifacts are really hard to enchant in 3.0.9b (but maybe it's just the case that I stopped trying before I reached a high enough level).
