Fresh off my first ranger win, I have decided to -- at long last -- actually play a mage. I don't know why, but I have always had a prejudice against mages, so much so that I don't think I have every actually played one. I guess I am more of a warrior/priest player by temperament.

As before, I am living in the past. The Angband 3.0.9b past, to be specific.

I have once again filled a small corner of the graveyard with my forays into the dungeon, which is why I wanted to post my latest incarnation of my gnome mage now. I feel like this one is winner material (if played right and if insta-death is avoided).

More to the point, this character is the best example I have experienced where a single piece of equipment elevates a character all the way to... well, level 29 at the moment. Indeed, outside a few decent finds, Dinky's gear is very unremarkable.

But that beryl Ring of Intelligence (+6) I purchased at the black market at level 16 by mortgaging everything of value I possessed... Wauuugh!!! At time of press (level 29), it takes my SP from 59 to 131! That is a ****load of extra spell points (not to mention benefits on fail rates). It means that, rather than skulking and preciously selecting my targets, I can brazenly enter into combat, throwing an array of elemental bolts indiscriminately, because I've got plenty of fuel in the tank. It makes all the difference in the world now, not to mention when I was only level 16.

Other equipment notes: (i) the whip of *Slay Troll* (+2, +3) (+2) is nice. I mean, if you're going to have a weapon you never actually use, it's good to boost your regen rate for SP while adding a little carrying capacity, all for the mere encumbrance of a whip. (ii) I like the +4 stealth with poison and dark resistance Boots of Doldung. (iii) Scarabtices is always handy.

Thanks for the feedback, malcontent. We aim to satisfy.

So, unfortunately, a Ring of Intelligence (+6) is not adequate to counteract player hubris. Previous-post-Dinky died. I think it was to a Dread. But it shouldn't have happened. I took on an unnecessary foe.

But I am back to trying and back to diving. Harder. I thought I'd post the current dive, because it's getting kind of dangerous. Since the character will be overwritten, I just want to record the current state of non-achievement...

But then I realized that I cannot overwrite a character on the Angband ladder unless / until have more experience. So, I persevered and gained the extra experience, and now I can overwrite the earlier Dinky. What follows really is a snapshot of the past -- about 40,000 Exp ago and 850' ago.

FWIW, I just picked up a large portion of that experience with a Staff of Power and a Troll pit that hopefully has something nice (I haven't dug through the loot yet). For reference, I now stand at CL 29 at 3750' with 138 HP and 50 SP, and a few other improvements. Even so... 138 HP feels... Dinky):

Level: 27
Depth: 2900'
HP: 116
SP: 41

Stat Gain: less than 10 potions total, I think
- Current base stats are S:15 I:13 W: 13 D: 17 C:15 Chr: 16
- Note: I use 'Standard roller' for character generation... it's like life: you get what the fates give you

Artifacts: None

Extra Stealth: None

Extra Speed: None

Uniques killed (5): Farmer Maggot, Fang, Grip, Mughash, Wormtongue

Spell Books: only the base 4
- what I wouldn't give for Mordenkainen! Diving without it is much harder
- Note: I play with disconnected stairs7

Resistances: *swaps* for fire, cold, and lightning... I should get acid, too
- I need rings to See Invisible (for Quylthugs) and Strength (+2) (weight issues)
- Likewise, my Amulet of Regeneration is the standard equip
- I also carry a ring of Sustain Intelligence... really

Armor:
- Robe [2, +4]
- Cloak [1, +4]
- That is all. ALL.

Really, the only objects of note I have are weapons:
- Beaked Axe (Blessed) (2d6) (+7, +6) (+3) with telepathy (un-ID'd) found at 1550'
--- unfortunately, 18.0 lbs is really heavy for a mage (still too heavy to wield), but the telepathy is powering this dive
- Small Sword (HA) (1d6) (+10, +15) [+2] (+3)
--- was very useful for both see invisible and for occasional orc whacking... until I found the Axe
- Long Box of Accuracy (x3) (+28, +16)
--- I don't use it nearly as much as I should (again, the weight of ammo is limiting)

Diving with telepathy and a mage. It keeps one on one's toes. One needs to be very agile. Nimble.

What are you carrying the HA for ?

On 3.3.2022 04:55 AceRimmer wrote:
The HA is in home inventory. I'm stashing it in case I find a cap of telepathy (or some other source). But I'm not carrying it.

Ah ok.
I see you found a decent cloak. Dont be surprised if most of the good randarts you find aggravate - 3.0.9b has a terrible randart generator.
