The damage formula in Angband is a bit complicated and unintuitive. What it boils down to is that you want a high number of blows, as that multiplies the damage from all other sources. At the start, high strength characters like warriors receive multiple blows with light weapons (like the dagger); later on, as their str and dex increases, they also get multiple blows with heavier weapons, so at that point you might prefer an axe.

Not much you can do about that now, just look for enchanted in a rapier, dagger, spear or trident and try and raise str/dex with rings or potions.

If you max str at the start, you get 3-4 blows with the dagger, depending on race. So, sorry for the confusion, I just glanced over the stats and failed to realize what the exact situation was.

That being as it is now, your best bet is to rely on your archery and/or any devices you might find.

And dont bother enchanting daggers, if you only get 1 blow anyway the heaviest weapon is indeed the best.

Regardless of race, with warriors I always distribute 12 str 8 dex; some people prefer 8 str 8 dex 4 con, sacrificing early damage to shorten the grind for maxing constitution later. Either gets you multiple blows with the light weapons.
