This one is doing better (develops much faster) than my previous dead priest. Somewhat strange: While in Nethack I used to play spellcasters, it seems in Angband (also in ToME) I'm doing better with dump warrior types.

This character feels *very* good, somewhat strange though: clvl 25 but still no decent amulet! Same with scrolls of *identify*: 1 single scroll so far. Anyway, no reason to whine: Just found the Pial which was badly needed (freeing 2 slots: oil potions and illumination source).
Rod of Enlightenment still has insanely high failure rate. Wish I could improve that...

Since you anly get 1 blow with that Lance, I suggest using the
ringof Constitution +6 for more HP. With only 1 blow, that ring of damage is not doing much.

I thought the same and did one level with this combination. Maybe it was just fancy but I could swear he was doing better with the +7 to damage.
Anyway, a new weapon now. This dwarf is actually going stealthy! Though he even does less damage, the benefits are clearly noticeable.
What I'm missing most for now is some kind of telepathic abilities. Is there something like this in vanilla (as in ToME)? Or is improving infravision the only way to go?

There are several sources of ESP in vanilla. One of my characters (half Orc mage) has a blessed weapon that provides ESP. Other sources are Thranduil, Dor Lomin, Theoden, Palantir, amulet of ESP, and I think that some headgear of the Magi will provide. There are probably a few others.

Had a very hard time on a 'superb' level 22. At first I wondered what would cause the 'superb' feeling. I found nothing but a large room full of trolls (which I recalled as completely pushovers in ToME). They all were slightly out of depth: Troll priests, Ice and Stone Trolls plus a couple of Algroth. After a tough and long fight I recalled back home with nothing special in my back but lost a couple of potions and enchantments.
The next visit on level 22 was surprisingly easy and plentifully compensated for my previous losts: Got Barukkheled, Narthanc and a decent bow!

The shops still don't cooperate: No scrolls of *Identify* and not the potions I need...

Aah, much better now.
Premiere: Just got my first Quylthulg-Burger in Vanilla (served by Barukkheled of course) :-)!
Sun is shining bride now for Kortschnoi, though scrolls and potions are still to easily destroyed. Badly need some immunities...

Just have slain unique number 22: Mim, Betrayer of Turin on dlvl 27. After a long and hard fight (had to bail out twice with HP < 100) he wasted most of my equipment. The War Hammer of Westernesse is now at (+3+2). Terrible. It was the first time a unique dropped something useful, though: Soft Leather Boots of Stability and a Tulwar of *Slay Troll*.
The biggest problem are the shops in town. They still don't offer what I need and now I need a lot of stuff!

On 16.12.2003 04:15 picommander@t-online.de wrote:
I would really like to use Barukkheled, if there only wasn't that FA problem. If I would take FA from the ring, I had to drop either RoS+7 or RoD+4. Both options would make the axe less useful. For now I'm using a somewhat dangerous swap between Theoden (telepathy and more HP, but no FA and less damage) and War Hammer of Westernesse (better damage and FA).

After scumming dlvl 30 for quite some time now, I think it's time to dive again.

On 16.12.2003 18:31 wrote:
GET FREE ACTION SOMEHOW. You don't have a perfect saving throw, you will have YASD if you don't. Stick with the Westernesse. Once you get gauntlets of free action, go for Theoden.

Westernesse is always very reliable. Slays, stats, Si, FA make it pretty balanced and quite useful. +2 Westernesse i think is much better than many artifacts.

I've just slain Lorgan in a small vault. Dangerous guy, with all his summonings...
When it comes to uniques: I've compared some of the uniques between ToME and V303 in the monster spoilers. In general they all should be equal.
But in game they feel a lot harder in V.
Other than in ToME it seems they also never drop any useful stuff.
How comes?

Good bye, Kortschnoi...
What did kill him? Was it "The Ancient multi-hued dragon breathes gas."? Looks like some kind of poison attack, but he was dealing quite good with poison attacks from other critters before. So, what was it actually? Is those breathing gas attack a poison overdoze?

iirc the AMHD is one of the more dangerous creatures with a powerful poison breath (just like basilisks). Unresisted it can be deadly, though i don't know how much exactly how much damage one breath can do.

Next time try to get some source of poison resistance :).
