First notable discovery at CL18,DL12; a pair of gloves of agility <+5>. Suddenly I have two blows.
Something like 50 turns later, I read-IDed Deep Descent and that was fine.

DL21 was a weird maze level that came pre-mapped; kinda like some of the fixed levels in nethack.

At DL33-35, I had serious problems without sInv sources. Then I found a lantern-shaped source.

DL39: first Ring of Speed (<+7>).

DL41: first Potion of Experience (CL33->CL34). Also, a bow of Lothlorien <+5>, which with the gloves and a good Mouse ring, provides +14 dex from equipment. I can't tell the difference anywhere between +14 and +10, though, so I'll be wearing a different ring. Also, it grants Free Action, so I can switch out my boots for rNexus.

This time when I fought the unique Stone Trolls they went down in 2-3 rounds each. I am, however, getting to that point in the game again I experienced Sudden Breath, and I don't even have Detection this time.

(This is where I noticed Pete's suggestion on my other character dump and implemented it before posting.)

Anyway, after noticing that the Monster Oracle Character thing is only going to work for a new save, I decided deep descent sounded like a fine idea, even if that would bring me past where I died last time. The fact that I'm no longer playing a character 'just to put a winner on the ladder, even if it has a terrible turncount' might also have something to do with it.

Had a close call, a Drolem getting four turns in LOS, but then I teleported and starting going up a bit. I began using my Enlightenment potions on every floor so I would have good odds of getting a turn before something breathed on me. This was decently successful, in that I survived my way through some consumables and statpoints until finding a Greater Basilisk, the creature that killed my last character.

I survived that too, mostly by teleporting away, then letting it come around a corner after using potions of Speed and Resist Poison. To spite the precautions, the GB died on the first round of melee because I got a huge crit. Loot from its vault was two potions of constitution and a ring of Speed <+10>. I don't know when speed points start falling off, but +18 seems good.

Back at town, picked up a helmet of telepathy (replacing my regeneration helmet [using an amulet instead]), which should help with Greater Basilisk-like problems, although infamously not Drolems. Also a scroll of Greater Disappointment.

Bokrog dropping my first non-ring poison resistance; a multi-hued dragon scale mail.

Summoned and killed Itangast; who dropped another shortbow of Lothlorien. It has lower numbers, but also confusion resistance, thus HUZZAH.

Bought some boots of speed, so I switched out rNexus for those.

On DL62, I tried fighting Radagast; that went nowhere, so I apparently need 50 points more AC or something. Oh, and apparently probing does not reveal spell list, so you can get a very inaccurate "You know everything about this monster".
After finishing the rest of the level, decided to spend 5 Healing on Radagast anyway.

While I was farming Qlzqqlzuup one of the undead Easterlings dropped a pair of gloves of Thievery that had slaying, dex, AC, and rStumblingIntoSummonedTraps.

Accidentally fell into a fugue state and suddenly I was on DL100 with everything I'd need to win the game except enough healing potions.

You are seriously short on CON. Lose one of those rings, and possibly swap in Trickery for a little more speed. PDSM. Shame you have no Crown of Might or Gloves of Combat. Crown of Might + Gloves of Combat + Dwarven Shield would make RoCON unnecessary.

I guess Speed is even less valuable than I thought? I kept thinking 10 speed would mean taking 1/4 less damage, which would be more than the 200hp I get from a Con ring. :( I actually found a couple Dwarven Shields, but didn't get them because they were heavy and didn't have rNether.

Oh well! I'll take your advice as best I can.

I found a Crown of Might fairly quickly, although it's only 1 CON.

Then I died to a surprising amount of demon damage; I had fought similar numbers and composition quite a few times already, but this time they just hit me all at once.

If only I had taken advice better; the lower speed/damage felt annoying so I was going to wear the CON ring upon actually fighting Morgoth.

So my question for next time I play Angband again is; how do you know when a monster can target you? It doesn't seem to follow simple rules of 'when you can see the monster'.

On 4.7.2016 06:15 Pete Mack wrote:
Ouch.

It's the same rules as you have--so if he has a knight's (or extended knight's) move on you, you are screwed. Mostly this is to your benefit, since it lets you get one chance to teleport monsters from out of LOS--if you stay 1 square back around a corner, you are guaranteed a first turn in LOS against speed +10 monsters. (And you can exploit it heavily with archery.)

Once you hit speed > 20, swapping it for CON is almost always the right thing. Speed 30 is definitely a waste-it is only modestly faster than 20, and speed 40 is just barely faster than 30. 800 HP is pretty low for a warrior (or really any character without zero fail) You have to use archery, and carefully chosen fights, since it is only 300HP greater than needing a full heal for a number of oponents.

The bottom line: Having 1000+ CON is a whole lot easier, and less susceptible to risk taking.

On 4.7.2016 06:27 Pete Mack wrote:
Oh, about speed. You can look up the speed numbers in the source file cave-world.c, array extract_energy. This discounts speeds greater than 26; greater than 30, the discount is extreme.
+10 speed is twice as fast as normal speed.
+20 is 50% faster than +10 speed.
+30 speed is only 26% faster than +20 speed.
+40 speed (hasted 30) is only 10.5% faster than +30 (hasted 20).
Note that 1120HP (roughly the HP of a level 50 elf warrior) is nearly 40% more HP than you have. So you are taking great risks AND have a 30% lower ratio of HP/damage.

On 4.7.2016 07:07 Pete Mack wrote:
A final note: Why fight demons at all? Horned reapers have no drop AND trample objects on the floor. Greater balrogs destroy inventory and drain charges...and have no drop. Gelugons have no drop. Most of the nasty demons have no drop at all, and none have large or "good" drops. You want to focus on dragons, undead, and especially vaults.

You were getting literally nothing from that fight, for big risk AND lost consumables.

On 4.7.2016 12:14 Nivim wrote:
Thanks for the information... although I'm not sure it was possible to get over 1000HP with this character; just not enough CON sources.

On the demons; I knew Gelugons didn't have drops, but I thought all the others did; I guess they've just picked up stuff a lot in my games? I had this sense that even if my Healing staff got drained there was a good chance I'd get another from the fight. Perhaps I'm biased from experiencing these demons mostly in vaults.
