I've checked out the code and the winner flag gets set on the death of a monster. The variant has quests that you can pick up to get additional skill point rewards. When a monster gets killed, your quest requirements (quests are always about killing a certain number of monsters at a certain depth) get updated.

From what I can work out, to be a winner, you need to have no outstanding quests. That includes quests you can pick up and fixed quests (killing Dr Moreau and Fu Manchu (equivalent to Sauron and Morgoth in vanilla)).

When I killed Fu Manchu, I had an outstanding quest from a lower level. I think that's why I'm not listed as a winner.

It's a win to me, though. I've suicided now and started a new character. This one got pretty boring.
