He's going pretty well so far. Managed to get some nice weapons, and the ring of sustain all has been extremely handy. He's using Fendilo because of the +4 con and speed, and the immunity to acid that it confers, as opposed to Anguirel, as it nearly got him killed.
Anguirel's aggravate woke up a chaos cockroach before I was close enough to take it out, and before I had a chance to react, Haivn was befuddled, afraid and getting his experience drained by the chaos breaths. He was unable to activate his staff of teleport (because he's stupid ;) and eventually got drained to level 1. I then ate a mushroom of cure confusion and read a scroll of phase door. Luckily, he was teleported into a room unaccessable from the corridor and room with the chaos cockroaches in, and was able to recall safely (except for having to kill a lost soul, which restored him to level 6). Unfortunately, the town didn't have any potions of restore life levels, so I had to wait a while for them to restock. Well, onto the next quest then, and hopefully no more near-death experiences (or death itself).

Damn. If only he could activate the staff of speed before Lorgan killed him, he may still be alive, but he failed three times in a row. He was actually able to activate it before, when it was useful but not really essential, but in the midst of a fight for his life, he just couldn't do it.
He had serious problems with trap-doors too. He fell through one, which he was trying to disarm at the time, while on a 'special quest' level, and proceeded to fall through another 3 or so before his death, all of which he was disarming at the time. What a fool.

As for trap doors, I stopped to disarm them with my gnome mage, I avoid them completely. Only bad thing is that traps can be covered with items, so you don't see them (this should be reverse - when trap and item on same square, show trap).

The issue of traps and items sharing squares is one I want to solve, but don't know how.

Having items hidden by the traps won't solve the problem; it will just replace it with other problems - missing a Longsword (4d5) because it is below a trap in a vault isn't much fun either. Maybe I'll make it an option, so at least everyone can choose what he prefers.

I'm also considering returning to the Vanilla system where items and traps can't co-occur, but that is also very cheesy.

Basically, not sure what to do.

I would like a command to toggle the display in-game (traps on top or items on top).. or maybe a command which hides everything (items, monsters) until you hit a key to return to normal view?

With Ursan Strength, you can/should burrow around trap doors, and other nasty traps.

Well, this isn't nearly as much of a problem now as it was when this character was posted, as now there's the option for a special character for squares with items and traps - which, at least in my experience, is *very* useful, since I no longer miss good items when hidden by traps, and no longer activate traps when hidden by items.

Of course, if an item is on a trap door, you need to disarm the door to get the item - but otherwise, your advice is quite good.
