Alrighty. This time I waited til I tipped the difficulty curve onto its side. Whatever that means.

My place in the dungeon is a bit more secure. More AC, more survival supplies, and a little more SP. I definitely see the challenge turned up compared to 3.4.1. I like it. More frustrating, but when you succeed it is so much more rewarding.

Lose Ring of Dog. You should be carrying !Heroism anyway. You will get a lot more hits with !Hero and #Bless (and !Berserk if you can find it.)
Also: Haven't you found a single distance weapon? They work a lot better than !oil...

My end results for the night. Ellly #9 is shaping into a tough little bitch. Especially given my lack of finding anything.

I actually hadn't found anything as far as missile weapons. I'm set for now though. There wasn't even a sling for sale.

That is a painful start. Probably should carry +0 arrows from store and save +6 arrows for uniques and major target. 23 damage isn't great, but it's far better than 16 in melee.

Also, I'd spend less money on armor and (a lot) more on potions. Buy all !CCW; also carry !Hero instead of Ring of Dog. This character is too weak to wake up any more monsters than necessary.

OK, here is basic advice for competition survival. To compete, you need to dive, at least some. There's pretty much nothing in the dungeon before stat gain at 1500' and below.
To dive (or just to survive in general) you need the following:

* Escape (Staff of Teleporation/Scroll Teleport Level; PB2; Rod/Wand of teleport Other, depending on the situation)
* Recovery from side effects (CCW, CSW) -- Buy out the Temple of these. Buy (+0,+0) blunt weapons to force more frequent restock.
* Optimal detection: Use Detect evil, detect doors/traps ALWAYS. Detect Objects when possible; Also important: Illuminate rooms; Magic Mapping; Light zappers (used _Starlight and --Light until 2700'); ESP when you get it can replace lighting. Infravision also can help.
* Some way to do damage. This means buffing (#Bless, !Hero, !Berserk). It also means either lots of blows with a good melee weapon (not likely!) or aggressive use of archery (cache "Splendid" ammo; use regular ammo when possible)

Thanks for the tips. I normally would have plenty of CCW by now but with a lack of missile weapon I keep finding my armor trashed by gelatinous cubes and such, and end up having to replace it all. Although hopefully now it shouldn't be so much a problem

do the sound effects seem random in this version? It kinda sounds like they shuffle through the sound effects randomly

Finally found a few decent ego items, completing my 4 basic resistances, with the help of a ring and an amulet. Still need to find a less embarrassing weapon though...

So I have an equipment dilemma!! I could use advice. I found a Ring of Reckless Attacks (+3,+5) [-16]. This raises my average damage/round from 25.2 to 39. That is a 55% increase. That is serious. My AC drops from 65 to 49. I know that every point of AC is worth a .25% damage reduction, I am not sure as to how the dodge aspect of AC works, but losing only 4% in damage reduction seems mostly trivial. I also had to replace my Ring of Fire Resistance. For now I am going to recklessly attack until it seems too dangerous, or somebody offers me advice otherwise.

Just found my first artifact. An interesting axe. It drops my damage to others from about 47 to 31.5, but I do 83 vs undead and am now immune to disenchantment! Although not terribly useful this early

YEAH! I just found an AMAZING artifact weapon! Check out that monster! I just went from doing about 35 damage to most monsters, about 100 to undead, to doing over 300 to undead over 200 to giants, animals and non-fire resistants, and 137 to everyone else! I will now be zipping down those stairs!!

Just found a Ring of Damage +8. I now am at a near end-game level of melee damage. (yes I know, not quite end-game, but I am far more powerful than I think I have ever been at dlvl 30!)

Every time before this time, whenever I have found myself a Crown of Serenity, it has always been far too late for it too be of any use. This playthrough it was very unexpected, yet promises to be very useful.

Oh wow. I am picking up where I left off last week, and am just now seeing that I never finished replacing my amulet when I bought the Shield of Resistance. I had a resist lightning or acid, and took it off. Hahaha I have no idea how long ago! :)

There is a =RoC+3 in the black market at the moment. I want it, so I was checking my damage output with each of my current rings (DMG+8 and STR+2) in order to determine which ring to keep. Well, it seems something odd is happening somewhere, because, well, let me try typing out my little chart and see if it looks right

Nice. I wasn't sure how that would look when I was done. So as you can see, for some enemies the +2 Strength is the superior ring, and +8 damage for others. Is this some funky math caused by the random artifact mixing with the 2 different sources of damage increase? Or what?

Damn. And at 45 turns to recharge, I could have that shit maxed faster than a level 47 Rogue w/2 RoS+13, BoS+11 and Sting could slaughter farmer maggot after he has a near fatal run-in with a Battle-Scarred Veteran and a Mean-Looking Mercenary, while the Singing, happy drunk tries to take pictures with his phone, hold a beer, and urinate simultaneously.

My point? I forget, but I think it had something to do with the drunk peeing on himself.

Oh No! Not Elly#9!

The Strength vs Damage ring confusion is caused by fairly simple math. +2 Str will likely increase your number of blows, say from 3.0 to 3.5, and it will increase your damage, maybe +2? Say your base weapon is the main gauche (3d5, +14 dam). Say your base strength adds +4 damage. Disregard how criticals might complicate things. Your base damage (with neither ring) is 3 attacks * (average of 3d5 damage (=9) + 14 +4) = 3*27=81 damage per round. Add the strength ring and now you have 3.5 attacks * (9+14+4+2 more)=3.5*29=101.5 damage per round. Add instead the damage ring and you get 3.0 attacks * (9+14+4+9 more damage) = 3*36=108.

Now consider what slays do. They only multiply the damage dice, which in this case in 9 damage average. So a x2 slay will add 9 points of damage per hit, a x3 adds 18, a x5 adds 36. And the strength ring gives you +0.5 hits/round or 9*0.5=4.5 more damage per round for a x2, 9 more for a x3, and 22.5 more damage for a x5 *slay*.

So damage vs everything favors the strength ring, 108 to 101.5. For the x2 slay you add 4.5, so still favors damage ring 108 to now 106 (=101.5+4.5). For the x3 slay though, it begins to favor the strength ring, now 110.5 (101.5+9) vs 108. And moreso for *Slays*, which are x5, so 4.5 * 5 = 22.5 extra damage per round for the strength ring, or 124 to 108.

And yeah, hilarious gloves, you should post them to the randart thread on the forum!
