With this class, I figured I had to play a demigod, and just had to take Infernal Deal and (later) Sacred Vitality for my talents. Of course, the only half way acceptable demigod is a spawn of Hermes ... At least these guys don't aggravate ;D

OK, Legendary[7] stealth at this point in the game? I am so tempted to risk the lair ...

I bust the Variant Maintainer (No confusion resistance but I had 97 AC) and get ... Padre and Terror Mask. Geez, two pieces of garbage for me!

But !SelfKnowledge reveals a colossal, staggering ... MONUMENTOUS ... 121% life rating. That's my 2nd best ever, I think. So, I'm wondering if skimming the lair is perhaps a bit too risky now. Ah well, there's always the quick start option ;)

I shot Robin Hood and got a nice bow replacement. In fact, I now shoot for a whopping 455 damage provided the fire brand (1.7x) works. And since there is no shooting damage reduction, that's the equivalent of over 700 melee damage! Not bad 2 hours in ...

On 28.4.2012 13:45 chris wrote:
Ah, I guess shots can miss too, so maybe only worth 500-550 melee ... Still, its pretty hearty damage output. I think I'll grab my elemental rings and start chasing bigger dragons, but I'd like a few more stat potions first.

I made a mad dash for Sting after totally annihilating the sleeping Logrus Master. Man, the Vault was bonkers with GHMMWQ and one of the Dagons for a one time only hallucination bonanza! But I prudently brought curing and luckily, the first small sword I picked up was the correct one. That makes me feel better about selling my early pattern weapon for some (useless) gauntlets of agility.

The Downs, of course, was insanely easy. A few wights woke up early on despite my Legendary[10] stealth but were quickly dispatched. The last 100 or so died in their sleep!

And I get another useless phial replacement ... Ah well, I'm banking on picking up the palantir soon anyway ;D

Shooting for 474 * 1.7 = 806? Yowzers! Those Storm Wyrms are dropping super fast and I must say I love the Strafing technique.

Now I just need to hang on for Telepathy at L35 and my happiness will be complete! As it is, I'm having trouble locating suitable dragons and I also nearly died when I blew a round on detection whilst next to a hound pit. Of course a death beast broke thru putting me in line of sight of a whole lotta nastiness!

Frodo again ... But at least one of the Gachapins dropped Thranduil for me to play with a couple levels early. I've had some really close calls due to lack of telepathy that all could have ended badly, the main culprits being packs of stealth resistant dragons and demons. A couple Great Wyrms of Chaos mixed in with 4 or 5 great elemental wyrms, all awake, can make quick meat of a poor, hapless adventurer, Legendary[17] stealth notwithstanding! Fortunately, this hasn't happened in line of sight yet, but its only a matter of time.

I really need to reevaluate the relative merits of shooting vs melee. At the moment, I'm good for 1146 damage from my flaming seeker bolts. And I'm really on the look out for Ballista which should catapult me to over 1500 I think, but I haven't done the math. Though at some point I'll need to replace my shot rings with speed rings ... Hah! I should be so lucky ;)

[CL35:Mutation Scummin'] 06:23
Yup. I tried mutation scumming for a bit. I'm so tired of Ring Juggling that I would love to pick up Harden to Elements. Once acquired, I would go with Weird Mind at L40 assuming I could avoid the Moron that long. For me, mutations are not so good if you have more than 3 or 4 due to the regeneration biff, so my strategy was to skim the lair for chaos vortices. They are easy to find but, alas, the Harden Mutation is extremely rare and after a couple bouts with vortices, and a bout with a well position chaos hound (Use the pits to back off), I couldn't get a decent run. But on my last clear my extra legs remained as the last to go, so I'll keep those.

I also tried melee for a bit, and it seems like Zantetsuken is my best bet. Finally, I noticed my Infernal Deal while killing Garm as he summoned about 60 hounds for me to play with. So perhaps my longer term plan is still a good one? Whirlwind Attack can restore 320hp and 80sp, I think, and Greater Whirlwind Attack can kill up to 20 foes! Sacred Vitality also augments vampiric drains allowing up to 100 per foe, so I am quite unbounded in my restorative capacities, provided I can find a nice vampiric weapon.

I'll wait for Slayer :D

On 28.4.2012 22:05 dzhang wrote:
Oh, wait, Sacred Vitality stacks with Infernal Deal? Would that be too powerful for a Blood Mage and Blood Knights? (Actually, does the Infernal Deal HP get halved for Blood Mages and Blood Knights? It shouldn't, IMO, and neither should Vampirism HP.)

On 28.4.2012 22:23 chris wrote:
Everything that heals the player goes thru the same piece of code (bool hp_player(int num) in effects.c), and that is where I placed hooks for Sacred Vitality and Blood Knights. At this point in the code, you don't know what is causing the healing since your only parameter is the amount to heal the player (int num).

Thus, Sacred Vitality stacks with Infernal Deal and Vampirism. And Blood Foos get halved from the deal and vampirism as well.

Surprisingly, there are currently 93 means of healing the player (at least, 93 places in the code call hp_player).

Can you spec out what Sacred Vitality and Blood Fooage should not apply to? Is it just Infernal Deal and Vampirism? I'm sure I can come up with some sort of ugly hack if needed ... But let me know before I reach CL40, please!

On 28.4.2012 22:51 dzhang wrote:
Well, that explains partially why it was so darn hard to get a Blood Knight Winner. For Blood foos, I only intended healing from Spells, Potions, Staves, and Rods to be halved--in particular, HP from Vampirism and Infernal Deal was supposed to be normal. (Also, another thing about Blood Knight is that it's supremely annoying that I can't rest/repeat while cut. Maybe there should be a general Disturbance option of "Ignore cut/poison status"?)

In terms of Sacred Vitality, I again intended it only to apply to spells, potions, staves, and rods, but I was OK with it also applying to Vampirism. In terms of game balance, I think it makes Vampirism much more important for melee, which I'm happy with. Stacking with Infernal Deal was likewise unexpected, but I don't see too much of a problem with 40 HP per kill instead of 20. We can deal with it later if we decide that's too strong.

Summary: Make Blood Foo have non-nerfed vampirism and Infernal deal, and add a "Ignore Cuts/Poison" disturbance option.

On 28.4.2012 23:42 chris wrote:
I can certainly do the first part ... For the disturbance, that is another matter. Its not being cut that disturbs you, but rather, taking damage.

Would you like the Blood Guys to not be disturbed whenever they take damage from cuts? You could die while resting!

On 29.4.2012 00:18 dzhang wrote:
Well, you could have a built-in low HP warning at 10% HP that automatically disturbs. Taking damage from cuts annoys me for other classes too, it's just that cuts are infrequent enough that I can splurge a !oCCW on them just not to be annoyed.

Back to melee despite its obvious inferiority to shooting. Its just that I built this character to play a certain way, and I feel sad if my Infernal Deal is never useful. Actually, its still seldom useful but that will change. And, Aesculapius is a very nice weapon, worthy of Sacred Vitality.

Still, I seek key resistances, especially nether and disenchantment. And dark. Oh, yeah, shards. Hm, sound too. And ... nexus. Definitely nexus. I am willing to play without blindness resistance though!

+5 sniper gloves have me shooting again. Is there some cool shooting talent I should pick at L50 or should I hang on to my dreams of incredible restorative massacres with Sacred Vitality? Anyway, shooting does about 3x damage than my best melee efforts, so I'll do that for a bit.

4 key resistances are still exposed. I had a cool nether hat but got greedy with a scroll of madness. They seem to always blast my gear for some reason ...

Now, I slay bears for 1071 per round. Narse, the Black Dragon, who has been scaring me poopless for a long time finally died to flaming bolts of death! Quite satisfying, even if my Dodge Breaths failed to work.

I hate Habu and was seriously tempted to just fail the quest. Two mana storms and I am done, unfortunately, but he never fired a single storm my way. A couple spears, some summoning, and a bunch of fire balls. At one point, I got down to 300hp or so but my Whirlwind Attack quickly restored me. He dropped my first attack ring all game which I will gladly use.

Ah, Rohirrim is too heavy for me, so let's retool for burglary mode: Legendary[30] stealth!

My cloak slot is free and could support covering sound resistance, but I simply cannot resist Jacks uber stealthy cloak. Likewise, I feel two handed wielding essential for maintaining any credible melee threat ... I'm not sure I could squeeze in a heavy Dragon Shield anyway.

I'm back to slaying bears ... First to go was The Demogorgon who I doubt I could take in melee. Heck, my fire brand didn't even work and still, I annihilated that guy. My Seeker Bolts still go for 600 per round even without the brand, and that's 3x what my staff does.

I got greedy with the artifact scroll hoping for +4 con on an elven cloak, but it only picked up uber high AC. Now that's not useless, but I'm tired of being stunned all the time. I really should have used my dragon wings instead.

Bears must be in season!

I really like the Stealthy Sniper. It reminds me of playing Hengband where distance killing was soooo advantageous. For example, I just took out a Sky Drake ... and he never breathed. And never summoned. Just a straight death march down my flaming corridor of bolts! Ah, the good old days :D

And Wahha-man? Could I really melee him with only 200 damage per round? I could barely kill The Invisible Pink Unicorn who only hits about 5% as hard as Wahha. But bolts and strafing meant he never touched me!

Of course, Lungorthin just laughed at my tactics. Cavern Creation? Are you a fool. I'll just summon high level undead uniques, including Kaschei! So I had to bail ...

I am Scouticus!!!

Can I make a recommendation? Forget about all this demigod stuff and play a Hobbit Scout! Shooting is freakin' awesome, Hobbits are shooters par excellence, and Stealthy Sniper is amazing. Of course, you could just play Hengband instead ;)

But I promise, at some point I will put my vitally sacred infernal deal to good use. Just not yet. When Cyaegha, Tsathoggua and the Witch King drop faster than you can say "Stealthy Sniper" then you know you are doing something right.

Plus I've only seen a single ring of attacks all game ... They are three times as rare as rings of speed which means I should have found 30 or so by now ;D

What do you mean "Summoned monsters" are treated like breeders? I.e. if I kill 800 Ancient Red Dragons summoned by a Draconic Q, then they stop dropping stuff? What if I find another pit of them later? Do monsters that were generated through summoning get a special flag to distinguish them?

Also, my Stomper boots show up as "pair of boots of the Rohorim" on my artifacts list.

On 30.4.2012 19:52 chris wrote:
For summoned monsters, yes, the game can distinquish a monster that has been summoned from one that has been generated normally. You can clear pits of ancient red dragons all you like, but farming Oremorj or the Queen Ant will only work for a limited time. Actually, killing 800 Cyberdemons is still quite useful :D

For your Stomper boots, this is why I hate C:
q_ptr->name1 = (byte)who[k];

And thus artifact 277 becomes 37.

Thanks for doing the summon XP changes. Rationally I felt bad about doing the Queen Ant over and over, but my character needed it...
