No idea what I am actually doing yet. Had just found my first forge, tried spending all my xp to be able to make something - failed, didn't have enough - and got swarmed by orcs while distracted!

I would recommend playing a character without Smithing or Song to begin with, to get a feel for the game -- this will make it much easier to know what you want to forge in future if you play a smith. Melee and Evasion are easily the most important skills at the start of the game for a straightforward build -- I notice in this case you didn't put any points into Evasion, which means that enemies will have an easy time hitting you and may get criticals.

Characters die pretty easily, so this shouldn't be too big a commitment. That said, of course, play what you enjoy!

You might also like to grab 1.0.1. There are a couple of minor changes to gameplay, and it plays nicer with the ladder for character dumps.

Thanks very much for the comments. I had not planned on Smithing, but then I came across this forge at 50' and figured I should use it!
