Overall I think the variant is playing well -- more identify would be nice though. The initial lore/identify scheme worked o.k. for a while, but when my int dropped after quaffing a swap stat potion I lost the lore ability to identify after using stairs. Then I was stuck with a lot of un-id'd stuff. I eventually got desperate and did some Id-by-use, but that was no fun after the curse weapon scroll and potion of deformation. And I only found one *identify* scroll the whole game and never saw one in town, for what it's worth.

Lack of identify for dumb characters seems to be working as planned -- they have to identify by use and will occasionally get hurt. Luckily, boosting INT and WIS to gain access to Lore is actually quite easy: shops are full of suitable amulets and lanterns.
