They are so much fun for a high-level mage that I couldn't resist. The final fight was much harder than the one against Sauron. Morgoth summoned a lot, and so the level got pretty crowded with Azriel, Gothmog, Vecna, Atlas, Glaurung, and others buzzing about. I didn't set up a sea of runes but did stick mainly to mana storms. At 29% fail I failed more than I was really comfortable with, and especially at the beginning I started to worry that I wasn't making a dent. Plus my hit points at 653 didn't give me big cushion against his raw magic attacks. But persistence paid off, and I ended up using only about half of my healing. I used up all 6 charges on my magi staves, but I used only one or two of 20 mana potions. I used about 7 banishments from scroll or staff, the rest from Kelek's.

All in all a crazy lucky game -- the vaults made all the difference. Every single item in my final kit was found lying on the floor of a vault.

I had 3 staves of healing going into the final battle and all three blew up on recharge, almost one after another. It felt like the greater recharge failure rate on those staves was up around 75%. I don't know the mechanics of recharging, but that failure rate seemed high or maybe that was the one place where I was unlucky.

I lugged around lots of ammo for my bow, and kept crossbows and bolts at home. I don't know why I keep doing this. I rarely if ever used them, and when I tried some holy might ammo against Morgoth it seemed less effective than spells even though the damage should have been ~30% higher (than mana storm). Maybe it was just my perception, or maybe I missed more with the bow than I failed to cast the spell.
