This is my comp 110 character which, as usual, I failed to bring home in the alloted time frame. To catch up on her earlier exploits, check the comp ladder.

FA 1.2.4 is a curious beast. "Morgoth's Revenge" wouldn't be a terrible title. The big guy seems to have banished all useful ego weapons and armours to the void and diminished the quanity of thier cursed-ego counterparts by about 90%, as well as intimidating the shopkeepers into selling a less than useful selection of items. In short, survival is a bitch.... and yet she survives.

We rejoin our hero, she having achieved CL27 in .3364 million turns. At this point she is low, but not desperately low, on supplies. She's retreated from Tol-In_Gaurhoth, to the saner depths of Amon Rudh where life is a bit happier.

Up to this point she has found a total of 2 ego weapons, one of Noldor since destroyed by fire along with her starting weapon of Noldor and, at the time, an inferior sword of shocking (Oh, and the bow, which she's terrible with). So now she wields a poisonous dart and the Lamp of Gwindor, her only two artifacts, along with a ensemble of mostly cursed armour.

Good times!!!

Wow. Yeah, for whatever reason there is *no* way we were playing the same codebase. Bizarre. Good luck!

If you upgrade to 1.2.5 (back up first blah blah), the ego problem is fixed. It is just possible that the code which caused it may have been interpreted differently by the mac and windows compilers...

Thanks for tip Nick, but she's come this far with the hardship, she's going to continue to run with it and see where it takes her.

Now with only 5 WoR remaining, Erin stocks herself with 3 of 'em and recalls to TIG48. This will be her last chance to accomplish something before having to do some extensive low level wandering and shopping.

She arrives in a quiet corridor and detects a potion of wisdom in a room just to the south. There's no passage, so she phases across the gap and arrives to find the rom full of the still sleeping Queen Ant and companions. They separate her from the potion, only about 50' away. If she can quickly kill 3 ants along the wall, she'll have access to the much needed potion. But after a single step something breathes force, waking most of the ants and foiling Erin's plan. Another phase lands her on the opposite side of the ants just 20' from the potion. In the meantime more force is breathed. As Erin advances to just 10' from the potion an ant takes position on top of it and many others surround her. More force is breathed, certainly by unseen hounds. Knowing that killing the ant guarding would be costly and that it would only be replaced by another leads Erin to read TL, and descend.

She arrives on TIG49, a potion of wisdom visible just 40' to the west. She advance toward it and is hit by about 9 different breath attacks. She supposes that its coming from the room who's doorway lies between her and the potion. She's so close that she can't turn back. She advances again, now directly outside the doorway and just 20' from the potion. She get pummeled by breath attacks once again, dropping her HP below 50. She see her enemies. A room full of various types of hounds including but not limited to hell hounds, nether hounds an umber hulk and greeting her at the door, an abyss spider. There were also some more hounds coming up the corridor behind her. One of her two remaining WoR has already been destroyed. She must TL once again, deeper.

Only about 10 turns after arriving in TIG and near death, she franticly reads her last WoR since losing it would certainly result in death and waits uneventfully for it to kick in. Now it's time to blow up the turn count with some shopping, by foot.

Well, she recalled to Belgost then walked to Menegroth, rather uneventfully. She picked up a cursed holy avenger along the way, which she will probably sell.

I'm not quite sure where to go from here. I'm not strong enough to kill Mim, and not strong enough to survive for long in T-I-G. A rod of recall or ring of acid would be sweet. Shopping isn't providing me with what I need anymore, and the grind is getting to me.

I'd suggest some wilderness time, or Nargothrond.

That Holy Avenger should not be cursed, btw - it just has melee minuses, which is the second-tier ego-item bug...

Surpassed the 1/2 million turn mark but finally have a kit that I should be able to take down Mim with, if he doesn't kill me first.

Well, that was easy. My first encounter with Mim ended unexpectedly when Erin accidentally read TL halfway through. After a brief respite on AR29 Erin returned to AR30 and found Ibun almost immediately. He's nothing like his old man (on paper, at least), and fell easily. The icing on the cake was that Mim entered the room just in time to see his son fall. Erin needed a moment to herself so she TO'd Mim, said a little prayer, and then set out almost immediately to find him again.

It took her quite a while to track him down. He must have been taking Ibun's death badly. She found him hanging out with a nightstalker and a vampire bat, probably his last two friends in the world. He didn't seem to notice as Erin circled around, but once she turned on the lights, he came alive.

Mim looked to be a broken man. It's almost like he wasn't even trying. She pelted him with round after round from the wand of shrapnel and he offered no resistance whatsoever. He just kinda advanced toward her and took it, resigned to his seemingly inevitable death. Yeah, he cast the occasional 'fear' at the fearless Erin, but that only hastened his doom. A couple of phases and activations later, and Mim was running for his life. He didn't even try to heal himself the poor SOB. He cast exactly zero offensive spells the entire battle and IIRC Erin was completely unharmed throughout. The only mildly tense moment was when the nightstalker awoke.

He dropped a bunch of crap and the rest of the level looked pretty tame so Erin read WoR. It was only then that she detected the demon pit... Oh well, maybe next time.

What! No acid balls? And you without acid resistance? Brilliant move taking out Ibun in front of Mim. He must have been demoralized indeed.

Erin decided to head toward Nargothrond. She's not there yet, but is moving through the nighttime wilderness without breaking a sweat. The only problem, if you can call it that, is that she's frequently distracted by stumbling onto encampments and/or strongholds (these appear too frequently IYAM) containing sometime lucrative chests.

Despite the hassle, the wilderness trek is paying off with found artifacts. Nothing game breaking yet, but Erin grows stronger with each passing day.

Erin lost her rBlind somewhere along the way, quite annoying. It's probably on that amulet she left at home.

What, no more skill minuses from weapon and armor? Clearly Nick hasn't made the variant hard enough yet.

Despite FA 1.24's flaws, it does do some things in a way that works very well. It makes me think that most all weapons and armours in most variants need to be scaled back considerably. Ego weapons with minuses to hit and damage fill an early game niche rather nicely without boosting damage output too much. Ditto the flawed armours.

There was a period of grinding, but I'm not sure if that was just due to abnormally poor finds of the abnormally poor equipment.

The big picture is that I've managed to achieve CL30 or so by small, incremental changes to my equipment. It's a very different experience than your typical band, and I rather like it , save for the grind which I think could be remedied if the shops were functioning closer to normally. Enchant scrolls are just about my favorite sight in the game.

Erin just found this weapon ... a Flail of Angband (2d11) (-89,+17) <-2,-1> ... methinks the RNG is upset at my continued survival.

Three things. The Battle Axe of the Marches, by far exceeds the damage output of any of my artifacts found thus far. The Amulet of Shadows activates for brand ammo. As strange at that is, it also requires no recharge time. Buggy for sure, but I'll take it, considering Erin's bow skill makes missile combat, even with branded ammo, a poor choice. Also finding a ton of amulets and very few rings, probably about a 10:1 ratio.

On 12.10.2011 04:46 Nick wrote:
I'm guessing the amulet:ring ratio is just a fluke, but I should actually check. And the activation is more of a bug than you realise - I thought I had disabled that activation altogether...

Argghhh. As usual, I come up with the proper keystroke, only after dead. Damn Diego kept pumping me full of seeker shots. Man those things hurt. I knew I could kill him, if I only got the chance. He was faster than me, and despite my big healing he outpaced me with the seeker shot damage.

I had just switched to a kit that maximized wisdom, and mana, at the expense of +10 speed. It was working well, OoD was a viable ranged attack, and with regen, mana wasn't a problem. That lack of speed hurt though.

I couldn't TO him. 13% fail.
I couldn't Teleport 19% fail.
Genocide? Wasn't sure if it would work on a player ghost.
I went with the big heal that put me at about 200 HP.
I should have portaled, 1% fail. It's a spell I seldom used previously because of limited mana, so it wasn't in the forefront of my mind.

Given another chance at my kit, I should have equipped the amulet (speed +10), sacrificed the 3 wisdom (30 mana) and see invis, and cast sense invisible ad naseum.

I never did come up with a reliable source of rBlind (or a cohesive kit). I had it on a oddball amulet at one point, but it got lost in the shuffle and probably wasn't worth wearing anyhow. There was a lot of swapping going on.
