Now this is more like it, a hybrid spell user I can understand. Buff up, smash stuff. Me like. I never cared for V paladins, but FA paladins are way cooler. This is my first ever. I could tell he wasn't connecting blows quite as often as a regular warrior, even with bless... but not nearly as bad as the ranger melee. I couldn't hit the broad side of Ibun when I came across him before I found my ring of skill. Chests filled with rings are cool, by the way. Never seen one of those before. Hope I find one at the bottom of Angband if I live that long.

I was cleaning out my hard drives and consolidated all my FAangband characters into my 2.2 folder hoping that maybe they would all have a chance to become player ghosts. I have no idea how this works, but was hoping. Anyway, in my nostalgia I made Smite-o-matic from Andelune's character and didn't bother to check the birth options. NO NOTES. I'm so stupid. Meh. Anyway, I killed Mim at roughly 600,000 turns.

Smite-o-matic is sooo friggin' bright with his background option, the lamp and Cammithrim. I make monsters squint and that's cool.

Player ghosts work by a file being written into the bone directory on death. All it contains IIRC is name, race, class, depth killed and any saying you register - maybe not in that order... If you have a look at a few, you can probably work out how to add more.

Nice to see someone playing a paladin, btw.

Hey thanks for the player ghost info, I understand now. I'm just about to Nargothrond and I've run into several wilderness vaults on the way. The scariest two being a demi-human and human multi-variety pack.

Tempting the gods displeasure by using a Lance of Doriath. I dream of maces of disruption with improved damage die. I check all the temples to see if any lead filled maces 4d9 turn up. I should probably keep dreaming. Maybe I'll come across Deathwreaker. Yeah. ZzzZzzz.

Smite-o-matic needs hitpoints and a better weapon. Came across a themed level today. I cleared maybe 33%. I love those. The whole monsters not randomly spawning is really nice. I don't know this ones name. If the message displayed the themed level quote I missed it. It was full of orcs and trolls and giants mostly... there is a screenshot tied to this character if you care to see. So far my favorite themed level is the one filled with dragons, because come on... nothing beats a level crammed full of dragons. Come to find out, Eldraks are really hard to hit with this lance. Feeling kind of ho-hum. Drained a lot of my stash and emptied my coffers with no good finds lately.

A lead filled mace 4d7 popped up! It really puts the whomp on things. When my elemental branding spell comes along it's really going to mow through some stuff. I just found a pretty decent holy avenger which fits into my current kit much better allowing me to ditch the str +6 ring and see invisible ring I was wearing with the mace. Got my stats flippy flopped by some Nexus hounds. Strength shot through the roof but dexterity took a hit. I think something else changed but I guess since it's not noticeable it doesn't really matter anways.

The Orcs and Trolls themed level is the Moria one - the message is something to do with the beating of drums. IIRC you can always CTRL-F to repeat that message lke any other feeling.

Hey cool, thanks for the tip. I'll hafta to remember that.

Man, I am loving this paladin because I really dig the spells. I have enough mana to buff up with prayer, sacred shield, elemental branding, protection from evil and both elemental resist spells with really good success rates and a good handful of mana left over for cure mortal wounds as I take damage. If I can take Glaurung down I'm going to choose the option that increases duration and benefits of helpful stuff.

Cleared my first 'real' vault. Also killed off maybe 30? ancient red dragons that I siphoned from a red dragon pit fairly easily.

Elemental branding only works if I use the mouse to choose which brand. If I use the keyboard it cancels the spell. My mouse feels left out anyway and I kind of like it.

OK, branding is on the to fix list, for whenever I actually do some work on the new version, whatever that will be...

On 9.4.2007 18:11 si_griffin@yahoo.com wrote:
Nick whilst we are on the branding subject, I tried a scroll of brand ammo yesterday but was told that I had no ammo to brand - I'm guessing that this is because my ammo was all in my quiver rather than my inventory?

On 9.4.2007 22:45 nckmccnnll@yahoo.com.au wrote:
That sounds familiar - I think I encountered that once too. Another one on the list...unless anyone thinks you should have to take ammo out of the quiver to brand it...

On 16.4.2007 23:51 HallucinationMushroom@Yahoo.egg wrote:
Poor Smite-o-matic. I forgot Glaurung existed at 55. Just sorta bouncing around and got obliterated. I never really got a chance to use my awesome 4d7 mace of apply elemental branding of coolness... crap!

I could've FAangband on a pda to survive this vacation I just went on... soul-crushing hours spent in airport terminals and on long flights could have been spared by FAangband. I really am going to buy one if I take another long trip.

On 16.4.2007 23:55 HallucinationMushroom@Yahoo.egg wrote:
If you read the scroll and had nothing to brand then the scroll should stay intact, like identify scrolls, imo.

On 17.4.2007 04:06 nckmccnnll@yahoo.com.au wrote:
Branding in quiver is now fixed in the dev version. That scroll behaviour sounds reasonable, too - I'll do that. I can't work out why the keyboard isn't working to brand, though - I'll have to check that in-game, as the code seems fine.

That's _really_ dead, BTW :)

On 17.4.2007 07:18 nckmccnnll@yahoo.com.au wrote:
OK, scroll back out implemented, keyboard branding fixed (note to self - don't use = when you need ==).

On 17.4.2007 09:57 HallucinationMushroom@Yahoo.egg wrote:
No kidding about really dead... hehe! Skin melt... no skin, just melt. I should've healed up but instead I kept bouncing around. I think when Glaurung saw me I had something like 180 hp?? Maybe lower. I set my hp warning at 60% so judging by my last messages I guess it was somewhere in that range. When he breathed I became part of the landscape.

About the keyboard branding.... I'll have to try again. I seem to recall getting it to work one time, but I couldn't repeat the success and I just tried in debug mode with a new character with no luck. Perhaps I was hallucinating that first time, which is likely. :)

On 17.4.2007 14:38 nckmccnnll@yahoo.com.au wrote:
Sorry, I didn't explain that properly. There was a bug in branding which meant that the mouse worked properly but using the keyboard cancelled the spell. I've fixed it in 0.2.3, which should be out soon.
