After a gadzillion lucky character early deaths, I finally managed to get a guy going. And going well :D

I've finished final adjustments to random artifact replacements. In this iteration, the game attempts to generate a random artifact that is at least 70% as good as the artifact it is replacing. Sometimes this works out, sometimes not. For example, my Jack of Shadows replacement (Art #2 btw) was lame, only having Poison resist that I cared about. C'mon! That's nothing like Jack. But I should just shut up 'cuz my Lawslayer puts Totila to utter shame.

A couple immunity lights are adding to the craziness, but I'm just sticking with Madonna's Lucky Star for the nexus cover.

Oh, also, Preserve mode works ... sort of. If I bring a wizard mode character into unusual rooms and stair climb, I very occasionally miss an artifact replacement. I can't figure out why, and once I block the Artifact list command, you probably won't even notice.

I feel like my early arts were too good, especially the light sources. Well, The Stone of Lore in The Cloning Pits was just insane. So, I dialed back the rand art generator to just 10 attempts to equal 50% of the original's power. But for lights, they only get 1 roll. Lights are coming out too powerful! A single roll for the Star gives: The Star 'Shadowbane' (+3) {WiCn;PoDkNt(Cn}. That's freakin' awesome, so for lights, for some odd reason, one roll is enough! Weapons and armor really need more effort though ...

I threw out my Lawslayer as that was probably an unfair early aquisition as well, so I'm now weaponless except for my wizardstaff/poison needle combo. I'll need to bust dragons for a replacement!

And I think I may have plugged the preserve mode bug for replacements. Shame, I missed Amber of all things, and that should have generated a nice replacement. Missed 4 others ... lots of arts must be generated at the top of the lair that one never knows about :D

Yep, which is why I will probably never use that option, as amazingly intriguing as it is. I can't stand preserve off, as it essentially dooms one to careful level scouring if one doesn't want to miss anything (which I don't).

I would've like to see Lawslayer btw...it would be interesting to see how it compared to Totila, as I almost always find Totila late enough that it is complete junk. Only time I ever used it was when I found it really early once, like at 500'.

I hat missing stuff too. Unless you're a player with enlightenment you'll end up missing stuff painfully.

At least it's not Tome2 where the objects were pre-generated being carried by monsters so unless you kill every monster, even with thge ring of precognition you still would likely miss stuff, especially deep.

Occasionally, Preserve=Off is fun. But when the game throws an uber vault at your CL28 character, including 22 artifacts guarded by Benedict, Tarasque, etc, you just need to walk away. If it wasn't for situations like this, I would enjoy that option ...

I'm just realizing with this guy how happy a priest would be with Lohengrin. Much much more than with its replacement:
The Mithril Chain Mail of Aleister Crowley (-1) [28,+8] {PoNt;Lv}

Maybe tweaking the quality of the generator while you play is not a good idea ...

I'm really having trouble in the weapon department and I guess I should have held on to my early weapons rather than selling them all.

In normal Heng/Cheng, one can hang out at the top of the lair for end game goodies. But with the rand art tweak, I no longer think this is possible. Most of my replacements have been rather lame, with a few exceptions like:

The Mirror of Corona [0,+22] (+3) {In;AcElFiCoPoNx;RfFa}

Pure sweetness, though just once, a rand-art picking up Con would be nice. And I think I've been playing without FA ;P

After clearing a MHD pit, I scored my first _*Destruction*. Well, my first 3 _*Destruction*, so it is off to R'lyeh to hunt The Stormbringer as deep as I dare. That has the potential for total awesomeness, but I would not count on it ...

And I'm tired of the stupid needle. Cutting thru a mature black dragon pit was tedious to say the least, but necessary to get some much needed stat boosts. So, my mighty wizardstaff will have to do.

Stormy at DL90 was a bust:
The Blade of Chaos 'Cosmic Horror' (6d5) (+13,+14) (+2) {WiCn;CfCa;TeBs|ECa/U~TL}

Dwarves at DL90 was much better, but not that great after all:
The Lochaber Axe 'Icicle' (3d8) (+21,+14) (+2 attacks) {At;LvBs|Co}

Ding ding ding ding ding!!! We have a winner!!

At last, an awesome weapon. I pulled it off the carcass of Surtur so I'm guessing it was supposed to be Twilight, which would rate high due to the +10 speed and fire immunity. This is better!

The Two-Handed Sword 'Golembreaker' (3d6) (+18,+18) [+11] (+2 attacks) {AtSl;SiBs|AFPM/*T(Wi}

+2 attacks. Force. Slay Evil. :)

BTW, I turned off the artifact list command since I am now confident preserve mode is back and functioning properly with a rand art game. Knowing what your art was supposed to be often breeds disappointment!

Oh, and most importantly: No freakin' chaos brand!!! Damn, that can ruin a fine weapon ...

Hey, I was just getting to thinking it's been a while since I played Chengband, and boy was I surprised to see such a flurry of recent activity on it! Looks like you're making lots of changes to the artifact system, which I wholeheartedly approve of.

I also had this idea for a new mega-class, and will put it up on the Google Code site once I flesh it out fully.

Looks like you're mostly playing with the classical classes... I'm guessing this is to better calibrate other changes? I'd hate to think the new classes are boring... ;-)

On 20.7.2011 19:08 dzhang wrote:
Oh, and maybe Chaos Brand should actually have a negative value? Hm, but then it might be useful for early characters. Maybe something like,

WeaponValue = WeaponValue*0.7+50

(50 is arbitrary, I don't know what it's real value is). So for weak weapons, it counts as a bonus, for strong weapons, it counts as a minus. Which pretty much it is.

I was no match for Sauron, and The Destroyer, Yog-sothoth, Azathoth, Shub-Nigurath, Nyarlathotep, Richard Wong, and Nodens are also getting the destruction treatment every time they bust in on my resting. But Cantoras? Yeah, I can handle that! This sword is crazy, but probably I need to find something else, since I am chronically out of mana.

Lots of goodies at DL95 ...

Since Chaos brand just ruins weapons, why not change it? Maybe select an effect between confusing strike, vorpal strike, sleep strike, and vampiric strike...

Currently Chaos brand has a lot of "character" but nobody ever wants to use it. Polymorph, teleport away and earthquake are just so annoying...

On 20.7.2011 22:47 chris wrote:
Chaos brand has limited utility. For example, my Lawslayer had it, and enabled me to roll the Cloning Pits despite only 300hp at the time. Also, it makes Atlas a breeze. But its just not worth the hassle, and who has an equipment slot to spare these days? I'll think about a change, but I'm worried I've made Cheng too easy as it is ...

[CL50:DL95] 10:15
Over 10 hours for CL50, and I'm not sure what held me up? Probably casting all those Craft spells and then having to rest after just a few rounds of melee thanks to my force brand. I really need another weapon, but could the RNG be kind enough to grant extra blows and slay evil again?

Finally, Gothmog, Nyarlathotep, Shub-Niggurath, Yog-sothoth and Wahha-man are down. That leaves The Destroyer, Mr. Wong and Nodens on the list of passwall/breakwall hound me uniques, and I really feel like I destruct the Destroyer on every single level. The other 2 are rare enough to ignore, I guess. I'll kill Wong if I can, but Nodens? Probably not.

I picked up my Blessing of the Grail at long last, and that makes the game so much more fun. Now, I just need to spy a 12d8 Mace of Disruption ;D

Cool! I'll take a stab at the Blood Knight again (although of the new classes, I still like Duelist the best). In the mean time, I've put up some of my notes on the Weaponmaster... I'm starting to run out of ideas for some of the other weapon groups!

On 21.7.2011 16:23 chris wrote:
@dave: I filled in some thoughts for the "club" class (earthquake, rock smash, crushing blow) as well as added ideas for slings (bouncing pebble and pebble storm). But we still need more for polearms and shooters ... I like the dagger specialty.

Time to put my Golembreaker down even though this cuts my damage output in half. Still, a vampiric diamond edge is pretty nice ...

Playing this deep is crazy until the uniques are gone. And I still can't get more than a single star off Sauron ... I tried the Destroyer too, and managed one star before having to flee ... at 200hp! I would need 10 !RestoreMana, I guess, and I don't want to sink all my supplies.

On 22.7.2011 01:49 dzhang wrote:
OK, I'm fleshed out most of the Weaponmaster class design. There are definitely going to be balance issues, but hopefully we have enough distinctive material to work with so that each specialty feels sufficiently different.

I might try a Slingmaster first!

On 22.7.2011 15:52 chris wrote:
Cool ... I'm on it, but it is slow going. I'll work on the Slingmaster after I get all the framework code in place.

Thanks... no rush though; take your time. I'll be playing with the current version to test out the new randarts in the mean time. My Rune Knight is kicking butt so far! :-D
