Craft really seems to resonate with an Artemis spawn. Geez, I haven't even got around to checking the new 2nd book spells, but given that melee is really hard to come by for a priest (as many 6 stat boosts to get 3 attacks?) I decided to go pure shooter. That means auras won't get any play for quite some time. Let's hope shooting is powerful enough for stat gain.

Good thing I pushed the sewer to L20 because Astral Guide saved my sorry butt in the Orc's quest. There is nothing like 60+ orcs surrounding you all at once in a wide open room (dead in 2 rounds despite high AC). But worse, I was scared by all the damage and couldn't shoot! But I could still read, fortunately, and after 30 to 40 astral phases and 130 loosed arrows, I finally thinned the mob enough were I could teleport, hide, and rest. It was also fortuitous I anticipated this and brought 198 arrows with me, so I had plenty.

BTW, The Sewer reward was nice (rand-art) and the Orc reward even better (Thievery). +6 to dex helps mitigate my early forgetfulness that astral powers of teleportation need dex for casting.

2 Knights of Camelot slain! Those guys are nasty, and I lucked into an early +6 speed ring.

I need a bit more testing before I release ...

On 20.9.2012 17:07 dzhang wrote:
I was wondering if FORCE_SLEEP on these guys were a good idea. Well, it's not like Hunter has any stealth to speak of.

Are the Camelot Knights mostly scary only at melee range? They don't have the POWERFUL flag (yet), so I assume the ranged damage is pretty minimal? (Fire Bolt is only 33 expected damage without Resist, so only 11 damage to you. I couldn't find spoilers on SHOOT damage, but I assume it's also pretty low?)

How are them Fearmasters?

On 20.9.2012 17:42 chris wrote:
Camelot knights hit to blind and follow you when you teleport. I've adjusted tactics accordingly and they are no longer too deadly. Even noble Sir Galahad is dead (sans goblet) though he did a *huge* amount of early summoning.

BTW, why did you make the rarity on Camelot Knights so high? I put it down to 3 (same as the unique knights) and made it so you can only kill 10 Camelot Knights (similar to Nazgul).

Shoot damage uses the damage specs of the first melee blow, so dial that up if you want more deadly shooting.

One Fearmaster slain so far, and he didn't even scare me! Having Heroism as a spell is *very* powerful these days ... with the resist fear bonus my saves were ~85% and I made something like 12 of those in a row. I'm sure I was just lucky ...

Would you care to consider adjusting racial charisma bonuses given that we've changed the meaning of charisma? I think some of the big boys need a bump up (demons, giants, golems) and some of the little guys (sprites, fairies, hobbits) need a bump down.

I don't have too good a feel for Monster Rarity, so whatever you think works is fine with me. You can only kill 10 Camelot Knights? Are you sure? Monster memory says I've already killed 8, and there are 5 in my LoS right now. (I'm OK with an unlimited number of Camelot Knights.. as well as Nazgul.)

I felt like Lancelot was too easy. Maybe we should bump his slash damage up to 30d1 and also give him NO_CONF?

Sure, many of the race CHA modifiers are pretty off now. I'll list my thoughts on the Wiki page.

>Monster memory says I've already killed 8, and there are 5 in my LoS right now.

Bug ... I missed some magic needed to make this work.

>I don't have too good a feel for Monster Rarity

Its a zero sum game. Increase the size of the bestiary and every monster becomes more rare. But on average, a rarity 3 monster should show up about one third as often as it would with rarity 1. Since it is impossible to predict how often that would be, I treat the rarity as an empirical parameter ... There weren't any Camelot knights being generated with rarity 26 and when I bumped it down to 3, I get 1 every 3rd or 4th level which feels about right.

On 20.9.2012 19:53 chris wrote:
[CL26:DL32] 03:27
Camelot is very difficult for me. With 228 base hp and paltry damage output, those knights, while not life threatening, are very hard to kill. I managed Garath for #2, but I had to kill him 4 times ... well almost. He kept teleporting away and a stupid ring mimic kept summoning like mad anytime I got near it during my hunt. It must have summoned 200 monsters! But I eventually prevailed (against Gareth, not that ring which proved nigh invincible). I am fast for my level too. Other characters would be in trouble! (In a good way).

I just picked up Master's Notes, so next level I will be +18 speed. And then, hopefully, I can finally wade thru all these pesky knights!

On 20.9.2012 20:17 dzhang wrote:
BTW, how about changing the messages for losing CHA? Instead of "You feel very ugly," it should be "You feel less sure of yourself."

Also, we should get rid of CHA loss by scarring. In exchange, maybe some fear inducing monsters should get LOSE_CHA attacks (mix it up with Terrify attacks). Actually, going through r_info.txt, there doesn't seem to be a LOSE_CHA attack?

Next up, Sir Gawain. He fought without summoning, but there were some nearby nasties about and his mana bolts can really hurt (though the damage is rather random). With my trident defender, healing was failing at 19% but was good enough. With my +18 speed, I was able to finish him off before he could teleport (I assume he can, the others certainly do).

The excellent drops are really nice off these guys. I finally got a weapon I could use: a Bo Staff (Pattern) (1d11) (+8,+12) (+1) {Dx;Cf}

3 attacks for 108 ... Now we are starting to get somewhere. Even with 99 arrows per trip down, its really hard to go pure shooter and I couldn't really carry 2 stacks. But now I should melee about as well as I shoot and its time to put craft spells to good use. Oh, and Healing is now 0% fail thanks to removal of the -25% fail rate penalty for edged weapons.

Damn, I squished the reward too. Sigh ...

Arthur was a bit of a letdown, but only because I switched to melee and anti-summoning tactics. Trying to kill the knights in the open was really hard up until this point, but even with rather low damage output, I could take out the once and future king. He dropped Jr.

Sir Lancelot on the other hand? Wow. I guess I better not spoil the fun :D

Killed by fear! Morgana Le Fay kept me scared throughout. If I teleported, she followed. In the end, I missed a couple saves on my actions (teleport away? heal?) and she mowed me down. How much do whirlpools do? I was at full health before that first one.

She's a little hard because there is no player action to escape. But now I know what to expect!

They only follow with 2/3 chance, right? So 2 turns of ?oTeleportation would have been 5/9 chance of survival...

>They only follow with 2/3 chance

Actually you may be right that ?Teleport might be the best tactic. I've started to notice that the Camelot guys don't follow very much at all, so I did some source diving: Monsters have ML% chance of following. So Nodens and Olympians follow ~90% (I thought your estimate was *way* low) and I've apparently automatized that a bit. So I think one could get away from Morgana quite easily (she did follow me 3 for 3, though, reinforcing my bias).

Also, my second failed action was probably only 40% save, which was stupid to attempt (I failed a bunch of 60% saves in the post-mortem which I use for evaluation, so I think I mixed them up). Of course, during the battle I had no idea what my saves would actually be ...
