Some interesting spells, but Extra Melee Attack is the main reason I'll keep toting it around. I think EMA should be +2 attacks, though; +1 barely makes it worth the mana. As for the other spells; very fun, but nothing essential. Bizzare effects is so cool, but I'm afraid to cast it--even with 19 goodluck!

So the last few books in general are a bit of a bummer in that each has only one or fewer difference-making spells. The only books that made a difference in Arthur's ability to drop were Guidebook and Getaways.

I think this is a real challenge with this class: I like the concept of "chance" spells, but at this point in the game, when Arthur is reaching for a spell, he *really* needs it to work. And thus Arthur is mostly a throwing/melee build with lots of useful utility spells but a few inventory slots short as a result of those spells.

The problem being, of course, that he needs those slots--for docile dust bunnies!

I do feel a little guilty about this character. Treasure Map--Banish or Summon meant a pretty easy way to pseudo-level scum and clear out the found vaults. Not saying this kept Arthur alive but it did make things a lot easier. Still, getting the HA weapon dropped on dlvl 4, and then getting so many resists for a Randart armor at dlvl 47 (Arthur wore it all the way to Morgy) were the really lucky occassions. Then again, Arthur's Good Luck rating is 21--the result of three pricey luckfindings--so in this case the adage "you make your own luck" might be especially applicable.

PS: 21 is the maximum luck rating. I'm also wondering if it's too easy to get to & stay at 21 luck. Did you ever get your luck lowered in the ~second half of the game?
(Of course it's easier for tourists because they get a bonus to starting luck which is even higher for a human tourist.)

I will say that I missed being able to activate the spears from the quiver. That did actually come into play during my battle with Morgoth. Otherwise they were basically useless. Maybe they should return to the thrower?

I think I got luck lowered by some cats, but it was always hard to tell. In fact, I think I also got a luck boost from some cats. Also, I drank a LOT of Pepsi. :-) And I did eat all the luckfinding shrooms I came across.

BTW, that throwing gear was in retrospect what made the win possible. I really struggled very slowly down to dlvl 42; the gauntlets and the quiver items were a huge pickup. Got them from a scroll, I think... super lucky there.

When a primary throwing weapon randart is made, it usually gets the return-to-thrower flag, but spears are not primary throwing weapons. I could give secondary throwing weapons a chance to get the returns flag, but it would be a small chance if I did.

The thing about returning stuff is this: it would be fun to throw everything in the quiver at a given monster, except for the fact that it is a bit of a pain to actually re-quiver it over and over. If there were some way to hoover up spears back into the quiver (in other words, accepting the challenge of having to walk to where the spear lands, but having it auto-equip when you get there), that would make spears a lot more fun. As it was, I just carried them for the activations, and I did find several randart spears that I just left on the floor.

I can imagine what a low priority this would be, however!
