Having a blast with my monster-blindness idea. In short, all the creatures in the game are a capital red D. I'm not allowing myself to use the look-recall feature to garner info either. My previous 2 attempts came across some glitches with my idea so I scrapped them. 1. I forgot to take out attr_multi for color changers and 2. didn't take out attr_clear for creatures that change colors depending on the floor they are on. I'm considering taking out the ability for uniques to speak but for now I'm leaving it in.

Gameplay wise, This iteration is taking it really slow. With a 4 attacks a round out of the gate warrior there isn't really too much to fear in the early levels anyway, but I wanted to give him the best chance for survival so I've cleared all the levels to 400' so far. I know I've killed what must've been a named orc and a few of the minor uniques. Breeders, interestingly enough, are always on my mind. I can tell something funny is going on when the screen starts to fill up with baddies but I get nervous that something nastier will be hidden among the horde. I don't know how much longer I plan on pursuing this ridiculousness but for now it's fun and it's more fun than I've had with any roguelike in quite a while. I've gotten in sort of a slump of just playing for the sake of playing.

Found free action just in time to take on my first minor vault. I had been afraid of carrion crawlers but no more! I've come across 2 Raal's Tomes of Selling which seems very lucky. If I can just find Confu and Blindness resist life will be peachy keen.

I just wanted something I was familiar with... keep the variables down so to speak. I have spent maybe a total of one hour with Vanilla since 3.0.6. I went on a variant tour and never really came back I guess.

guess not having character history is an 'advantage' ;)

Heh, guess so! I did sneak a peek at my unique list and it just says X is dead X is dead X is alive, and so on... (I renamed everything X). I wasn't sure what it would display. I'm supposing that I won't be able to use genocide scrolls either because the only character in my game is 'D'. I don't know how that mechanic works so I'm just not going to chance it. I came across one and just sold it.

The best benefit from having the history non-display is that my extreme slowness isn't displayed for the world to see. :) If I were playing my typical playstyle of loose inebriated nonsense I'm sure I'd die in flames pretty quickly even with a munchkinish character as this.

Narsil. When you first wield Narsil the screen should cut to a video of Boromir cutting his hand at Elrond's in the Peter Jackson movie, followed by Navajo Aragorn lifting his sword from the animated Lord of the Rings flick.

Nifty ring of +6 to Dexterity bumps me from the already ridiculous 6 attacks a round to the ludicrous 8 attacks a round. Rock rock on. C'mon poison resistance, show yourself!

I don't know who to thank but something dropped both Thranduil and the Phial. That freed up a few inventory slots and telepathy really takes a lot of stress off. I've come across the same greater vault (X shaped) and it's tempting to just run in and die. I know drolems are behind it. They must be. Bastards. I need poison resist, and soon.

Alright, Hurin's Axe! Finally, a proper weapon. It's tempting to put on my Dex and damage rings for 6 totally crushing attacks but with 2 Con rings perhaps I can just take a blast of poison to face and live to tell the tale.

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm at the place in the game I was most interested in seeing. I figured I would be targeting single monsters but I find myself going after globs of creatures because I figure they must flock together because they are individually weak. Finding or creating a good battleground and then luring them in with aggravation is commonplace now. Telepathy is proving invaluable because I can tell when something wicked is coming based on how fast they move. Usually at this point in the game I target juicy dragons/demons/uniques but not knowing what's on the battlefield keeps me in perpetual awareness, which is a state I'm not used to. I normally just fly around and take pause when I notice that AMHD, or drolem, but I cannot afford that luxury with monster blindness. Poison resist is still toward the top of my xmas list followed closely by confusion resist. If my soul depended on winning I would level scum and spam object detect for unid rings or simply scum the black market but I'm not willing to do that.

I've taken on pretty cleared the last few levels without too much trouble but I did come across a few really nasty monsters. Suddenly every monster that I come across that telepathy missed must be a drolem and I start typing, 1 wpm.

Alright! Poison resist, finally. Fingolfin and the robe of permanence with confusion resist came from an earlier minor vault. I feel a bit lame for using *destruct* to rape a vault of artifacts so that's a strike against my ethics but at the time it was rather exciting bouncing out who-knows-what with my tele away wands to get into the key positions to wipe all the monsters out. The most powerful monsters probably were trapped inside but I didn't take any chances with what I encountered.

I dropped down to the 3000's as fast as I could and my rod of detection found a tasty medium sized vault as soon as I got there which coughed up Gondor's crown. It must've been guarded by weaklings because it was easy mowing through everything. Hurin's activation for berserk rage plus heroism potions puts me in the neighborhood of +90 to hit.

I had a very exciting fight with what must've been Azriel, the angel of death. Azriel blasted away a couple of my most promising characters 10 years ago and I've never quite forgiven him for that. Something was soaking up my attacks without much wear and then shot a nether bolt at me that took out maybe 300 hitpoints? I was in a big room so I teleported away and healed up and chose a better spot to fight whatever it was. He must've tried tracking me down because he eventually blended in a trail of hounds? but I was on guard. Sure enough, after a few hounds were downed he was back and badder than ever. I dropped from 500ish hp to 83, my biggest scare yet. Luckily I had *just* found a potion of life I was planning on stashing but with whatever it was down 4 stars I figured it was worth it. Azriel gave himself away when the message declared, "summons an angel." After a zap from gondor and a regular healing potion I finished him off and the remainder of the hounds?. They never got a chance to attack but they bolted straight for me like hounds do. Watching how fast the stars decline from baddies in addition to how fast my own hp drops is something I focus on a lot during my regular games but in this experiment it is just about the only thing I have to go on, other than watching movement speed with telepathy and the occasional message indicating summons or spells which I still glaze over for the most part.

Also, I found a shield of deflection of preservation (10,40) which covers disenchantment. Perhaps I hadn't been paying attention but 50 ac from an ego shield seems really high and I don't recall ever finding one so good before.

Grooveshark, for the win.

Ahh, I knew this day would come, but it doesn't diminish the heartache from parting with such a trusty axe. Doomcaller has come my way and I'm a damage whore.

I went from +6 speed to +27 in a matter of moments... I came across a smallish vault that I think was guarded by greater demons and those jokers dropped three speed rings! +10, +4 and +11 in that order. Again, just in the nick of time, because the next big monster I came across was very very nasty. Even with +36 speed, berserk and heroed it took a loooong time to put it down and it cost me 5 regular healing, a few phase and ccw and an activation from Gondor. It breathed gas and acid pretty powerfully, kept up with me speedwise and summoned dragons. I'm pretty sure it was my old friend Ancalagon. He gave me Doomcaller among other assorted tasties. The only hole I have now is nether. Onward and downward to the 4000's I go.

Oh man, why did I go for a heal activation at 380 hitpoints?! Everything was really coming along nicely and I'm pretty sure I killed the Tarrasque. I'm not too sure what killed me... maybe I can download another copy of angband, load up a new character there using this guy's file and perhaps I can see the uniques I came across and find out what I died to. I was looking forward to fighting Morgoth.

This was a neat experiment. The most exciting part was getting up to 2500'. Once I got a grip on the basic resists, fa, blind and confusion and finally poison the fun factor really took a dive. That makes sense too, because the exciting part comes from having resist holes and not being sure what you might be facing. Once I had everything covered it became a tedium of going, oh hey, theres something that can withstand 2 attack rounds, better watch out. I died from a foolish decision but one that didn't stem from not knowing what I was fighting. I knew it was something capable of landing 400-500 points of damage in a round. If I can find out what it was I'll update. This was a fun experience but I don't think I'll try it again. I've probably ruined ancient red dragons for myself for the rest of my life! It's certainly a winnable proposition, at least with a big beefy warrior type, in my opinion. Certainly Morgoth would be an obvious monster.

The Mouth of Sauron?! Oh man! I don't think he's ever bothered me before. And it wasn't Ancalagon earlier, wonder what it was? I did kill Glaurung, maybe it was him. I got the Tarrasque, Feagwath, Witch-King, Atlas and Ungoliant. According to the list it looks like the Tarrasque was my deepest kill and I came across Carcharoth and Huan but must not have fought them.
