Those steel armors in the dump are my first forged armors besides a crappy pair of copper shoes, as I only now found some real chunks (courtesy of a rather scary set of humans chambers)... well, there was a bronze one, but I dropped it to avoid -1 speed, and then forgot about it.

I spent ages killing the Queen Ant. My infravision has been crap and so have my AC and HP, so I kept on either losing sight of her or having to phase or teleport away to save my skin.

Thanks tremendously for the forging tip. I read once that power available for improving quality depended on power left over after "handling" the item type, in a post that ended in, roughly, "filthy rags forever!" Urgh... a *little* knowledge, as they say, is a terrible thing. It's the reason why I don't source dive!

I have tried a pure-casting necromancer with characters where I got to pick the stats (so they were a lot better). It's a lot harder than pure mage for a long time due to the absence of Phase Door and Teleportation - Become Bat, while nice, takes sooo long to become viable; Shadow Shifting is terribly late, and Shadow Warp even more so. OTOH once they get Death Claw they don't need to run too often! (Although by D30 I find my casters run mostly on attack rods anyway, at least for the little stuff).

Here is where level is used:
potential = (max_level - level) * 80 - 500;
chance = div_round(150 * level, max_level);

None of these uses rewards a higher level. Note since level is a minimun of 10% of max_level your minimum chance of failure is ~15%(usually a bit lower because of integer division in min level).

Anyways, I'm just saying there's no penalty or reward to potential or success. You may want higher object levels for base ac or dice. I still wouldn't pick filthy rags or daggers but that is a personal choice on needs
