Since all the cool kids are doing it, I might as well too. Damn, Lazy Yeek Tourists suck. And I don't mean that mildly. They really suck. This is my 10th iteration and my best character by far. I've only had 1 death, but the other guys keep getting Wis and Chr boosts. I've had a couple Int boots, but I really want Con. Alas, none are forthcoming. This guy has managed a Dex and 2 Str, so is a keeper. Of course, getting 1-2 hp per level totally sucks.

So, how to start? Here is my Lazy Yeek Tourist Survival Guide (tm):

[1] Get some shiny armor on your lazy yeek butt. Pronto.

[2] Buy a Pick, a crossbow, bolts. ?Phase Door. ?Blessing. !CLW.

[3] Stairscum for Jackals. They are all you can hope to hit with bolts until you get your skill up. Use ?Blessing for almost anything else. Get a couple levels under your belt, dig some gold, buy more supplies.

This is where I am at now. Next phase of my plan:

[4] Enchant a shooter up to at least (+8, +8).

[5] Do the Thieves Quest. Bring 20 !CSW. !Heroism and ?Blessing. Shoot 'em with bolts.

[6] Wargs ...

Wish me luck!

Addendum. Buy the third spellbook as soon as you can. Casting Identify spell (available at CL5) is worth some nice xp!

I nearly died to a freakin' Newt. Even with an AC of 22, I still took 16-20 damage per round versus that guy, and it took 8 shots finally hit it. ?Phase Door saved my life, and I better stock up further.

46 minutes to get myself up for the Warg quest ... How embarrassing! Of course, I made a 2k mistake in trying to buy a nice weapon only to realize that I would die trying to kill anything with it as I whiff every time. Better to shoot exclusively, I think.

After the Wargs, it was night time, and I decided to head over to the second town to scum Farmer Maggot. But I better wait for daybreak first. Yawwn! What a nice day! I'll just check the shops again before setting out. The magic shop had not one, but 2 rings of warning with esp animals waiting for me! Nice. Now, if I can ever get FA, SI and 100 more hp, I'll be all set for the Tower :D In the meantime, seeing hounds coming will be nice, once I get deep enough.

Yeek Power! My weapon is vampiric and poison branded, though I can't seem to gain any skill with it as my level is too high. Wormtongue dropped some nice armor of resistance netting me AC 48! And I just ran into not one but two undead masses at DL10, which I farmed with bolts. On the rare occasion they got next to me, they could not hit me to drain con. And does my fighting skill really read as "Superb"? Well, !Heroism and ?Blessing were used to become ultra buff for this ladder pose! Check out the 110hp!!!!

Yeeks Rule!

Granite Walls to CL33. Then quartz veins. My initial life was fantastic except for the 18/80 base con. And really, that is terrible for a little yeek, so I had to stock up on !NewLife and hope for the best. My first potion gave 18/120 base con, and I decided to stop there. Especially after my last character took 8 potions to get off 18/70 base con.

For my next phase, I plan on killing dragons with magical devices. Once I have a pair of totally awesome weapons ... We're talking Ringil and Aule ... then I'll try out my Genji gloves and make a go for the boots and the express card. But in the meantime, I will gain CL45 at a minimum before moving on.

Oh, 3 !Experience took me from CL33 to CL38. Pretty nice for my lowly experience requirements :D

Actually, if you have enough money to buy armor to get your AC up to about 17-18, you can write a macro to farm White Worm Masses. That's what I did to gain my first 10 levels. It's pretty similar to the Quartz Vein farming macro. The only catch is that if you get hit by poison, you'll lose a big portion of your puny HP, so I try to do this in corridors.

I can kill dragons ad infinitum. Sooner or later, I will get something totally awesome. And if not, well, at least I will quickly level up to CL50. What is it, 3.5 million xp to the top? I can't remember if the baseline is 5 Mxp or 6 Mxp. Anyway, tourists are -30% xp, right? Well, I'll find out soon enough!

Thorin! Though, I hardly care. It is +4 con and sound resistance for the time being. Only 9 artifacts found by CL41 is pretty lame ...

I'm still chugging along at the top of the lair. Now that I am carrying my 2 _ManaStorms I can kill 3 or sometimes even 4 dragons at a go. I should go do the Volcano for another. Still, _ManaStorm is less than ideal for a lazy yeek tourist. That's where the _Healing comes in ...

Still nothing good. I'm up around 14 artifacts or so. Well, I did score Crimson now that I think about it, except its sitting at home collecting dust. I'm in the mood for:
Jack of Shadows
Cambeleg
Amber
and a kick butt weapon. I can wait. Its looking like CL50 may come sooner than expected. Perhaps 2.8 Mxp? But surely that can't be correct ...

Getting the PYEC is sort of like winning the game for me! It gives me such a warm fuzzy feeling :D

I used Farmer's +2 attack vampiric weapon (which I was an expert in using) to complete the cloning pits, and picked up my first real quality weapon: Aesculapius. So, I trained it to nearly skilled in the dragon's lair (6d11 vampiric weapon, anyone?) and then took it to the castle. I went in without telepathy and darkness resistance, opting for the extra 7 points of stealth, and I think this paid off. Absolutely nothing woke up before I was ready. Both Greater Titans resisted confusion, but my AC was high enough that it did not matter, though the second one had me down to 360 or so hp and considering a !Healing.

Now, isn't it a shame that my ?ArtifactCreation cloak picked up no teleport? I mean, it would be a perfect fit right now. Oh well, its still good for posting on oook. Real hp are something like 560.

I think I'll stick with melee and the dragon's lair for a bit longer. Aesculapius rules in there, and melee is so much easier than using wands, although probably not as effective (It plays about 10x quicker and required fewer keystrokes). I'm not sure where to go from here? End game power doesn't really seem possible, except that Henkma already did this like 8 years ago ... and I bet he didn't even scum the Tower for gold. Crazy ... It looks like Magical Device Mastery and rockets are the way to go.

On 15.9.2010 21:21 chris wrote:

I'm trying one and done of a different sort now. One unique and then flee to recharge. Vlad nearly cleaned my clock, requiring all 4 charges from _Healing and me finishing him off with a rocket while at 193hp (So I needed more healing than I had). I guess this means two things:

[1] Doom Quest II for a second _Healing

[2] Mutation scumming hoping for the resiliency mutation.

Don't worry, I don't think this guy will last too much longer :D

On 15.9.2010 22:33 chris wrote:
[CL50:DL72] 08:40
Well, that's is powerful as a yeek can get! 3.15 Mxp for CL50 is pretty low and makes for quick leveling, provided you can find a way to kill stuff.

Now, I'm going with +6 Con rather than +8 Speed just so I have a prayer of staying alive (I'm under 600hp otherwise). And magic devices are far more effective for me than melee, but I still don't see how I could possibly take out, say, Tiamat. I need about 10 wands of rockets I guess, and a bit more magic device mastery. +6 total is doable, I guess, but I still fail somewhat frequently.

Mutations didn't go well, though I managed to keep sterilize. Now that I think about it, getting the moron will probably biff my magic skills unacceptably anyway.

A pit of Storm Wyrms! Sad to say, I'm so weak that about 15 or so died to breaths of their brethren. I'd beat them down to 1 star, then whiff 8 blows in a row. Sigh. But I did pick up Silver Chariot and some nice Dragon Gloves of Magic Mastery (only +2, but they have some key resists). So, now I play without Shards resistance. Its probably better I lay off Amberites and Shardy dragons anyway. +8 speed seems more important for the moment.

Damn, Rhan-Tegoth is a fountain of hit points. At least he doesn't heal himself, but I clearly need a lot more fire power. 8 _Healing does seem to be enough so far (Dave, I bet I use more healing than you do!). Fortunately, I was able to melee Rhan for the death blow after he swallowed my 15 mana storms (6k) and 4 rockets (1.6k). Hmmm, he's got 9k hp, which is a bit much for a little yeek, I guess.

My plan is to hang out for the Jewel (this can take forever) and then scum rockets in angband. Also, stupid Brand did his trick where he drops a 4x light crossbow that is *not* the one I want. Darn shame too, cause I'd be able to use it now thanks to those dragon gloves.

I plowed down to DL75 despite lack of the Jewel. This is wand of rocket depth, so start the timers. I've gotten two already (1 from BM and 1 from bottom of the dragon's lair). Once I get 5 or 6 I will be formidable!!

Rockets #3 at 11:44.

I also found a nice ring of +2 attacks and slaying, but I can't trade either my con ring or my speed ring at the moment. 121 uniques are down, but killing the likes of Yig was a struggle. The Sleeper of N'kai nearly killed me when I tried him, so unless I am carrying 10 !*Healing* he is off limits. I'll just need to wait some more, I guess. Gimme 10 -Rockets and we'll see who's the boss ;D

Yeah ... he also tagged me for a ~450hp nether breath despite my resistance. Part of the problem is reliance on _ManaStorm which (1) puts me in melee range and (2) does 50hp damage ever activation. So, all 15 activations combine for 750hp of self inflicted damage. No wonder I need to heal like crazy :D

[CL50:DL75] 12:47
A 5th -Rockets came a while back. Also, my first -Disintegrate. When Robin Hood's bow came with Shards resistance, I decided to swap out Crimson and off a few pesky Amberites (I know ... I know ... I had other Shard shooters at home this whole time). Gerard seemed to be on every stupid level, and he breaks walls (Blood Curse). Corwin was situational, but was a wanted corpse. Plus he dropped Grayswandir which is perfect for me (I forgot about that). And (Blood Curse). So far, I've survived 4 blood curses on 5 Amberites ... Only Julian has spared me his wrath!

Stats are crazy now. I could give up Isildur, but I need confusion and sound out of it. And I won't give up a +6 con ring just yet, though if I luck into Tulkas that would work out nicely.

On 16.9.2010 04:40 chris wrote:

In my euphoria, I got a bit careless with _Destruction and just caught my second -Healing in the blast. Oh well, I'll take the Jewel and be happy!

Iketa was a pain in the butt ... Charge draining summoners are trouble, and that leaves quite a few of the uber uniques. I just need more patience, I guess.

The rocket hunt continues ... I'm at 8, but I guess I'll just hang out here for 20. 164 uniques down, including most of the wanted ones (maybe 5 left?). But the bad news is that Bahamut is wanted, resists shards, and thus won't be killed by me :D

Am I crazy? I was just fixing to take on freakin' Cantoras. I woke him up with a rocket, and he summoned charge draining liches, of course. While trying to lure him into my anti-summoning lair, Cyaegha came over to play, so I settled for that guy instead. I can only kill one at a time ... and I think it is better to leave Cantoras alone until I am carrying *Healing*. That guy scares me!

I have the reflecting mirror and a !Invulnerability saved up for The Destroyer (who will require 20 -Rockets to kill). Of course, I'm hoping its The Unicorn at DL88. Can I take her?

_Genocide are damn useful! I'm not sure why I've always ignored them before?

Its taking a while to get these wands, but in the meantime, I have the firepower to take down most uniques. Almost all of my rockets have spawned inside big vaults, and have required careful destruction to obtain. I haven't missed one yet, but the last one suddenly disappeared and I was momentarily depressed ... until I used the look command to determine that Luigi had picked it up. Now, the race was on to get him before he read a scroll of teleport level, stealing my precious rocket launcher. I destructed as much as possible, then raced in to meet him shooting him down with a single rocket before he could escape! -Disintegrate needs to play some serious catch up, now.

I finally decided that waiting at DL80 might be better than DL75, since this is native depth for *Healing*. Of course, that meant taking on my DL76 quest, but I got Pazuzu rather than Bahamut or Azriel. Nice thing too, since he was carrying Lohengrin :)

Second, I made a *huge* fat finger mistake at one point, but fortunately, I was able to recover. Again, more on that later :D

So, my first battle with the Serpent failed due to hunger issues. I went down hungry, but surprisingly, I wasn't drinking potion fast enough to satisfy my hunger. I go two stars off the sucker, but then I fat fingered my Satisfy Hunger spell and was quickly gorged on potions. Plus, summoned charge drainers (that get free first moves, btw) drained my wands. So, I recalled out.

Second go. I brought a bunch of biscuits this time to prevent the previous mishap. It went well. I had 5 stars off the Serpent when Sauron got summoned and took a free move to drain all my wands of rockets. No big deal ... that's what ?Recharging is for. I got The Serpent down to 3 measly stars, and confidence was starting to kick in when *wham* ... I reappeared in town? WTF!!! I must have fat fingered my -Recall? Oh damn. 20+ !*Healing* wasted on that effort. Better try again.

Third time is a charm, they say. Biscuits again, and some better inscriptions on my -Recall to prevent a similar accident. This time, The Serpent could not escape, and I brought him down with rocket power!

All told, I blasted probably 150 -Rockets into the Serpent. With his regen and my mishaps, this is way more than I should have been forced to endure. In the end, he dropped, and that took so much out of me that I just retired, leaving lazy guardians for somebody else to mop up. Plus, getting uber powerful artifacts is not really in the spirit of the lazy yeek tourist ...

Hats off to you!!!

What an amazing win. Hats off also to your ability and willingness to turn tail when necessary. Of course, with wands as the primary offense, it's more obvious when they get sucked dry :)

I think I'll go for the artifacts on Blob II, as I just can't bring myself to play lazy characters too often, and I'd like to challenge myself at least against the Unicorn and Morgoth. The Plain Gold Ring, well...I met it already, but did not even have a picosecond of a though of engaging.

Nonetheless, a fine, fine win.

With the iron crown of chaos on your head wouldn't melee be feasible?
