I use fire bolt (and lightning bolt when fire resistant) almost exclusively in normal play (and WoD for Zs!). With Heighten Magic I get a good percentage of beams on them which helps a lot. It does take a while to down some foes though!

For Glaurung, Smaug and then some of the greater wyrms on the Dragon theme level I used my bolts of hurt dragon instead.

I haven't done any melee yet (as you can probably tell by having a weapon without slays!). Thrown weapons are starting to come more into play as they can do some 300HP damage per throw against the right monsters.

Yes and no. It does some magic mapping and detects all traps on the level - if it can find some animals on the level.

As I read in another chardump, WoD has become a utility spell rather than a last-gasp-get-me-out-of-trouble spell. T-I-G is just overrun with Zs and Cs and mages do not have the power to take out such groups of frequent breathers (certainly with my attack spells anyway). Obviously I don't mind the elemental breathers (other than Hell Hounds which are annoying with all their HP) but anything else I just have to lure into a nearby area (especially when they are in a vault) and then WoD them.

Found Raal's - just in time too! Fought Ancalagon on my commute this morning. I had no !oRM and he kept summoning. I used Ice Storm (has a damage/MP advantage over Mana Storm and Ancalagon doesn't resist cold) to attack, _o Banish Evil (and TA) against his summons and then Dimension Door whenever I needed to rest for MP. Eventually he ran out of mana and I was able to down him - conveniently he left three artifacts for me.

That was the toughest endurance battle since taking Mim down with my 2d6 magic missiles...

Found a randart Glaive with all slays (bar undead), +3 to strength and shard resist. 5 blows with average damage 90-100 for most of the bad guys. Going to carry it as a swap for now as my Shortsword means I am nearly immune to base+pois after casting resistance which is more likely to keep me alive.

I used dimension door to find a place to rest and regroup midway through a battle with Vecna at T-I-G 90 (you can guess who I was really after...). However whilst resting, a Black Reaver that Vecna had previously summoned bore through the wall and breathed on me before I was even given a move. That was an instakill as I was still damaged from Vecna.

I was hasted to +23 so I don't think a black reaver can get a double move. I can only assume that the disturb options do not work correctly on creatures tunnelling into rooms...?

Whatever caused it, it is certainly an issue - you shouldn't be able to be instakilled when resting in a room when you have good speed and telepathy by something boring through the wall. As I rested I could see the thing coming towards me for goodness sake!

If I had different disturb options set I wouldn't have been killed - but whatever I had set, I don't think I should have been killed in these circumstances.
