The twist on races and starting areas is a
pretty cool one. I could never get a High
Elf going past the early twenties, as you are
stuck in such a dangerous place, you need
a little luck with resistance drops, etc, to really
get going. Seems picking the Clarity
specialty was a good chance, as it gave me
enough mana to deal with the vast packs of
hounds that seem ubiquitous in Oangband.

Anyway, an early attempt at some kind of
dwarf mage (the ancient one, forget the
name) failed when I spoke to my girlfriend
for a second while casually wading into my
first pack of Hellhounds. Those are really
nasty in this game (seems their breath damage
is significant even with resistance), and they
made short work of a nearly 400 hit point
level 36 attempt. Well, it took a few days to
get over that stupid death, but when I tried
again, I went for the early "challenge" game
with the Gray Elf (level 30 starting wilderness)
and somehow got off to a good start.

The real blessing in this game came with an
early Ringil sighting, and that enabled me to
power dive rather significantly.

I didn't find the last two spellbooks (Tensers
and Raals) until the last 1000' or so of
Angband, so much of the game was spent
with me charging, recharging, and draining
wands and staves (draining for mana) at
every opportunity. Kind of missed the
Necros early damage spells and especially
their group damage spells (always thought
a mage should have some of those, esp. in
vanilla) but finding Staves of Power or
Holiness took care of this itch, when they
were available, and didn't explode. It was
a shame I didn't get to use Recharge III until
near the end of the game.

Didn't find many artifact light sources, and
only switched Stability boots just before the
end fight for an artifact boot that had res
nexus. Lots of swords were found, but
were rather moot after Ringil. And as usual,
this was a Preserve Off win, which always
feels (to me, from years of playing)
considerably more satisfying.

The wilderness addition was pretty neat,
though some of the additional dungeons
felt unnecessarily too long. I killed the
guardians in all of those dungeons before
facing Morgoth in Angband.

I'd say the neatest thing I found in this
variant was an improved Sauron. He's
got some extra "personality[ies?]" shall
we say. Quite a fun surprise, a-la-Hengband
and some of its transforming uniques.

Would have been different if Cubragol would have dropped before I killed Morgoth, for example, or if some good boots made an appearance.

Also interesting to note was that I didn't have res. confusion until like 4950' and I found that last set of boots. Prevented me from meleeing with a lot of things, and I always had to have a stock of lesser potions to fix confusion status, whenever it would happen.

Clearing special levels in that Ungoliant forest dungeon was quite tedious. Detect enchantment + those sense surrounding rods were quite invaluable. Saw a couple +6 "special" speed rings (some of the new rings from either this variant or the latest O), but couldn't juggle resistances properly to include them.
