The Old Castle was a walk in the park comparatively. Went for Sting and also got this Pattern Weapon with extra dice and resist disenchantment. Still need some Chaos resistance though ...

BTW, my normal stealth is Amber[17] which is pretty good for a zombie! I'm just berserking at the moment ...

Its like putting a ring of damage +26 on each finger, of course, with the added benefit that you can wear a ring of speed or Tulkas instead. Also, I find the healing effect of Berserk quite useful, and it was instrumental in taking out Nyarlothotep (by no means a pushover!)

Still, I have found 95 artifacts, but none of the good ninja artifacts. Well Sting is OK, but it is a gimme as a quest reward. And Excalibur Jr. is OK, but Pip dropped that. I really wanted a *thorn combo, and neither of those artifacts is very rare. Still, they elude me ... I'll settle for the 3rd ring of power (Check out that shiny plain gold ring sitting in my home ;-)

Some more reflections on Ninjas: They are probably my favorite class to play. They fight well, once you adapt to their style. Rather than toe to toe melee, I adopt one of several approaches.

A non-summoner, or an almost dead summoner will get the quick walk treatment. A sneak attack from 1 side of the monster followed by a quick walk to the next available side and another sneak attack. The Serpent got this treatment mostly as well. If he damaged me, than it was one step back to quaff Healing.

Summoners were generally fought like so:

where I am the @ (I know some of you are still playing with ascii graphics ;-) and standing on a wall of course. Here I might berserk up and just go toe to toe as it is too annoying to have the monster wander away from my perfect positioning. Sauron, Oberon, Tiamt, Bahamut, etc. were killed this way.

Dispel Magic would generally merit a hit and away response. Not too annoying for a ninja, so I kept Bunshin up anyway. I generally would Berserk as well because Dispel Magic would dispel this as well, allowing me to use my ninjitsu in response!

Then Nyusin is good for the arena, or other wide open places. The Serpent got a fair dose of this as I did not mind spending the hp to make sure I got a sneak attack rather than a more risky Quick Walk approach.

So Ninjas can fight well enough to kill all opponents in hand to hand melee. But it must be their Hide in Mud ability that I like best. Any form of Passwall is just oh so powerful ... It offers great opportunities to avoid fights when you are simply out to pilfer some loot lying on the ground; It offers great opportunities to rest, or prepare for a big fight; and it allows for easy escape when damaged as you can just back away into the safety of the walls. Finally, it is the best and safest way to kill that annoying Nodens as he can be fought entirely in the walls.

An lastly is the stealth. Even a Combat Zombie can post Amber[27] in the stealth column (I removed Crimson and Pitch Black Night for the final battle as stealth is not useful against the Serpent). There is no need to pick a Nimble Hobbit for this class, as you are probably better off choosing a race/personality that offers good HTH fighting.

My recommendation: Play a Barbarian Ninja! You will love the Berserk ability ...
