First stable character at quite a time... I think there´s imbalance with speed items. This is my third try at a paladin... reached stat gain w/ another but never found boots of speed w/ any of them. Then, with this one, in one big trip up to ~2300 (damn, things get real tough from 2000 to 2050 in O), i find TWO boots of speed! look at my inventory! I´ll make a sugestion in the O forums later about this (Boots of speed easier to find, but bonus tied to dlvl, crappy bonus at low deepths)
Able to already kill Gorlim... Note that with that recently found weapon i cant use Shields, but hopefully ill be able soon, so till them i think ill fall back to Orome. Was using a Westernesse Mace for FA (argh), but found Aegis in this trip too... and using a Heng trick (get nude and quaff !knowledge), i discovered it gives RConf, RBlind and FA!!!!!!
Yeap, already very hard to kill... I´d like to find RoRPois nstead of that RNether...
I am in doubt about what´s better, Holy Light or Fast Attack, cuz FA works better with EMagic thanks to the damage from boosts boosted...
Diving...

:) :) Hi! Ive been away from every band cuz my computer exploded... no computer, not much playing, except work that i play V (easy)...
At home i play O and Heng only...
OAng is very different from every other variant because imho its more realistic... hmm my fave things in O:
- Specialities - special abilities characters get; A warrior can be a super fighter, an archer, a tank, a berzerk, depending of its specs. Endgame variance is huge thanks to this
- A superb and completely re-done combat system, removing most straight combat damage from str, rings etc. Damage is now mostly a % of weapon dice.
- Fractional, stackable resists (7.0 onwards, this is kickass!)
- REAL tough... must play paranoid after playing V, and some old V elements that force u to stock things at home
- All classes have spells re-done, 9 total classes, pure warrior, 4 pure spellcasters and 4 warrior-mages of 4 schools; the warrior-mage classes get different spells carrying less books, and each class can be still fine-tuned with specs.
- NO flood of items. The game gives u less items, less crap, less of anything. It´s common to be almost nude near stat gain. Learn to use, and conserve... till later that things get ok.
- The grandaddy of 4gAI.
- No start-dagger-melee-abuse like V. Min attacks for every1 = 2; U get at most 3 from start, and its probably that a dagger w 3 attacks will deal ~75% the damage of a longsword with 2 for most classes..
If u have O questions, just shoot ;)

Great character!

Why no arrows? Do the rods suffice?

Regarding boots of speed: I only once got boots of speed, +6 on 300' with a warrior. Having no detection, money, potions, FA, etc. I couldn't dive beyond 1000' and the game was so boring with the speed (hack and back) that I quit. Your idea to tie bonus to dlvl seem excellent. And finding +1 or +2 on 500' or 1000' more often would be cool indeed.

On 22.9.2005 16:51 dominic wrote:
Wow, a boots of speed +6 on 300'? And you quit? Man...

At high clvl, I didn't bother using missiles with my warrior either. Belthronding is great for Disenchantment resist, and Rods sufficed for me. I'm not sure how well this character does with the rods but I imagine it's only to shoot from out of sight, or to shoot down monsters that run away - so magic item failure isn't critical.

Besides, OoD works just as well on mobs, if you have the mana to spare. ;)

On 23.9.2005 04:40 Atriel wrote:
Missiles with a Paladin?? hahahahahah nah :)
The paladin has the crappiest missile skill of them all in O, even the Necro shoots better... with my dex and Belthronding id have missile skill of ~90. This would cause i miss half the shots against anything... And the Pala is also the class with the crappiest MD skill...
I use bow a lot with Warriors, but the pala is designed to rely on range spells... that indeed are cheaper (if a lil bit weaker) than the priest alikes.
Once ive found Boots of Speed +9 at dlvl 16 or so, after going up... with an Evasion Warrior in the ladder... he got to the fourties :D
Dominic got it, I mostly use OOD... Rods are when mana is low, i cant sustain COCA so rods fill the ranged idle gaps perfectly, recharging fast...

On 23.9.2005 04:52 Atriel wrote:
BTW, massive scumage at the fourties, going up and down. Felling safe to dive now.

Warlords done... little advancement, lately my GF is *king almost all my free time ^^ I was mildly scared to continue in a hurry too cuz there r some nasty humanoids at ~2450... Dark Elven Sorcerors, assassins, etc.
I started playing better when i started following the etho "I don´t like to get hurt". Playing with the "minimal hurt" ideology saved my aggressive ass plenty of times... so i set HP danger at 75%... but at warlords the beep sounded plenty of times ^^ this can mean i am not playing well or the level is too nasty.

Diving steady, huge vault at dlvl 70, LOTS of uniques:

Ungoliant
JiIndur
Dwar
Mouth of Sauron
Gothmog
Lungorthin
The Defiler
Pazuzu
Fundin
Omarax
2 GWoPs

The balrogs and gwops opened most of the bubbles vault, so that they were all stacked in a line. 2 unidentified rings inside, along other unided stuff.
Decided not to try anything (even tele away) cuz i had no Haste, used them all fighting the ones i killed...

Then when im home, i notice the ID stack is only at 1 ^^ bleh lost ~25000 gold from some loot :)

Hey, I have a quick question, from looking at OAngband spoilers. How the hell do you survive? :( For example Morgoth has a 12d91 nether storm move, that does a max of like 1000+ damage and avg of 555, in O it seems like the breaths are the least of your worries compared to the incredible spell damage...

I know in O everyone is supposed to be dangerous but wow, Morgoth's 720 dmg max mana storm is nothing compared to the max damage figures other stuff has...

Going up, down, detect, killing stuff in my way, raiding ocasional vault, destructing a lot, around dlvl 80,

On 4.10.2005 17:30 Atriel wrote:
hehe :) in O, Humanoids are very dangerous... spells are very dangerous... but i think there´s a cap to max damage. Nether is 600 i think... and Morgy AFAIK requires Nether and Dark resist. Having the resists greatly decrease damage AND makes the monster use other (lesser?) attacks...
I survive:
1. Not killing everything, specially if there r other monsters nearby
2. overreacting with Destruction
3. walking randomly up/down ^^
:)

On 5.10.2005 05:58 Atriel wrote:
By 3 i mean stay at a dungeon deepth enough you feel its reasonably safe to kill everything the dungeon deepth can throw at you if you want/have to.
But really, if u have critical resists covered and have knowledge (in your mind, not in the savefile) of the nastier monsters/attacks, things get easier. I personally now think O is easier than V/NPP, just cuz i tend to get bored and die a stupid death in those variants.

my brain is burning... must sell something lol
Started playing this char on my job´s PC, no cd-rom, no internet, and O 6.2... and as its doing well i disk ported home... and now i have my SECOND clvl 40 ranger at job... :D
Scary move to get Narya; Unique Q, Mouth of Sauron, GWop in a closed corridor from a vault, i open it, get surroundered by summons, tele away line the uniques (crappy paladin Magic Device skill could fail), get stuff.
My current armor has aggravation, but has 4 high resists, including nether, and is light. so im using it. Just realized I can cover all resists but shards if i put on the gauntlets w/ res dark and wear Thorin... hmmm
I am walking by the eighties for quite a time, and stack stuff doesnt seem to grow. Didnt found any good ego hi-dice weapons anymore as i dive... it almost seem its inversely related to dlvl!
Shortage of FIRST book... bleh
i think ill have to buy out store after selling LOTS of dungeon books.

Well I think you've convinced me to give O a shot. I've taken V, ToME, and Heng so far, with NPP and O waiting on my harddrive for test runs.

I see you are using an ego weapon. Are unique weapons rare, or not as good in O as in other variants?

The problem with paladin weapons is that i need a blessed or a concussive weapon... and O combat is dice based, and most artifacts do not have improved dice nor are blessed nor concussive (thats why Calris kick ass in O) I´ve been lucky to roam dlvl 30-40 a LOT, place where holy avengers seem plentiful, and found a nice one (improved dice)... it seems that the deeper i go, good ego weapons get rarer, dont know... just found Aule, that is better than my Sword i think... Will start using it soon to test.
About egos vs artifacts
A good ego with improved dice can be a weapon as good if not better than a similar artifact for each fighting class.
Improved dice is a VERY rare occurence, and even rarer on good egos. My assassin got a 1d10 short sword of *slay evil*, imho the top weapon for an assassin would be a 1d20 storm hammer of FOO, but Angrist is better than the short sword in almost every way but criticals.
Criticals add a number of dice of the weapon, so a 1d7 sabre may deal slighty more damage than a 2d4 falchion in average because of criticals. And i need a 6 blow weapon w/ this char to take advantage of huge straight damage from buffs always on...
waa
i could ramble about weapons in O forever... and i want to find better weapons still for this char (better than Aule? hehe dont think so) ill go play now :)
