It has taken until dlevel 50 (!) to be able to get RConf and RBlind at the same time. Thankfully, Rohirrim dropped when clearing out a dragon pit. There was a second dragon pit (black) on the level, and Thorin dropped in the first set of kills. Killing the remainder of the pit proved a touch easier...

From looking at Delve's home, you'll see he's using a 2d9 weapon when he has access to a 2d11. Reason: I'm too lazy right now to always make sure that I have a brand spell up. Taking the talent that lengthens magic would help with that, but I'm still debating the merits of that v. increased criticals.

For most of the early game he used the whip of the balrog, which was an incredibly useful early find.

Cool! I had a paladin this low with
SM, EMagic & FastAttacking (holy light used to sux)
Enhance Magic works with Potions of Speed and positive potions/staves too! (based on 6.1) I used to dislike it before knowing this, but having speed effects last more is very good.

Good to see a high level Paladin on the ladder. I thought they were unviable. :)

Do the spell books replace the Magic Device skills adequately in your opinion? I see you have no ranged attack (save for Orb of Draining perhaps) at all. How did you deal with Nrulings and breeders?

I like Holy Light. It's a cool skill.

On 15.4.2005 22:00 elrosk@gmail.com wrote:
Holy light is definitely much improved and a very nice talent right now. Extra light radius, extra damage v. a variety of monsters, and a resist are a nice combination. As intended to work, Atriel, you're right that EMagic is a good choice, enhancing a lot of things a little. In the current version it also enhances spell effects a bit, making it even better. If I understand my limited code-diving correctly, chants/etc. will now give an extra +5 to hit, speed will go up an additional +3, etc. However, right now EMagic is bugged. The talent in conjunction with a poison or temporary elemental resist will reduce damage by something like a factor of 18 (as oppposed to 3). I rationalize my looking longingly at armsman as being based on my not wanting to exploit a bugged talent, but really, it all comes down to wanting the character to lay down big damage numbers!

Re: viability, at the lower levels, paladins sometimes seem to suffer in comparison to their warrior brethren, simply given extra fragility, worse stats, being limited in melee weaponry, being somewhat worse in melee skill and much worse in ranged combat, and missing a talent. The better saves and ability to occasionally cast weak spells doesn't really compensate imho. A number of previous attempts died pre-statgain, which is why I waited to post this incarnation until after getting simultaneous blind/confusion resist and through with most of statgain.

Now, on the other hand, the paladin may very well be easier to play and as/more viable than a warrior. Starting to get hurt? Cast a heal. Facing the elements? Cast the proper resistance spell. Facing tough melee, or something giving bad status effects? Holy shield and prot: evil. Don't have the proper brand on my weapon? Cast a suitable branding spell.

Now, a warrior can do all these things too, but doing so makes one's inventory begin to resemble an apothecary. With the paladin these abilities are much more convenient, and it's less likely I'm going to die YASD out of an urge to conserve resources (the number of characters I've killed despite their having a !Healing or the such in inventory...).

On the other hand, Dominic, if I wasn't as fortunate as I have been (and I hate admitting it...) with weaponry, I might be singing a different tune right now. Available decent paladin weapons are few and far between, and the difference both in frequency and (with a few exceptions) quality for paladin and warrior artifact weapons is pretty wide. Likewise, lack of fast pseudo-ID has vastly inflated my turncount.

Regarding the lack of a ranged weapon, pre-stat gain I used simple magic devices. Now OoD is enough for the weak nuisances, such a nrulings, fleas, etc. The lack of a ranged option hurts a bit against uniques who hit to disenchant, for instance, so I try to avoid those or phase around a lot while spamming OoD. On the other hand, and this is just a quirk of my plastyle, I really don't participate much in ranged. I prefer to wait around corners and engage in melee with monsters, rather than stay in line of sight and risk getting monster summons/breathed on/missiled to death (this tendency is only reinforced by playing some Hengband recently, which really tends to punish you for standing out in the open).

Delve is now lvl 46, at dlvl 65. Gear is slowly improving, though much like the current incarnation of torsoboy, my trusty combat gauntlets were disenchanted.

Some things never change... I still can't make up my mind as to a final talent!

A Mace of Disruption of Melting 4d8. That's pretty cool - where did you find that?

Aren't you better off flipping a coin to decide what you'll take rather than try to win the game with only two specialties? :)

The mace of disruption of melting was found somewhere around dlvl 55, off a teleporting humanoid (who may have picked it up elsewhere?), and my jaw pretty much dropped when I realized it was also an ego weapon. I wonder if it's possible to get "rare" weapons to drop with increased die ranges similar to what happens with common weapons (such as finding the 2d11 morning star). Ever found one? I never have, but maces of disruption and their ilk are so rare that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

That monetary systems sounds like someone trying to make purchases who invests in _very_ volatile stock.

Finally Delve has a full set of resistances. Dlvl 70 and only +3 speed makes life interesting, but so far, so good.

Unfortunately, the code that gives weapons enhanced damage dice checks to make sure that their dice * sides don't exceed 40. This means you're not going to find any maces of disruption (4d12); you might, however, run across a blade of chaos (4d9) or a scythe of slicing (6d6).
