Since I kept running out of mana I had to buy a int ring to get over 18. Then I found the lightning ring in the dungeon and that keeps me out of trouble quite nicely. I've only killed wormtongue, brodda, and one of the unique orcs. Never even seen smeagol which is a pleasant change. A normal start it seems, just gloomy.

Not til tomorrow though, way too tired now.. a finger might slip. My lightning ring is helping tremendously, and I still have just a infravision placeholder in my neck slot. I've learned that as long as you give yourself enough mana to teleport away (maybe enough for 2) than you can drop quite fast.
