    Hello from the past

Hi all, and I'm assuming this is primarily the same bunch that I enjoyed some form of company with back in the usenet days (though I notice no Eddie?)

I have no idea if I'm going to primarily lurk or play or what, but it's been some time since I've played around with Angband (last winner was 3.0.3 I think) and it does seem awful tempting when I see all the threads seemingly so active.

So, anything changed much between 3.0.6 (last one I really played) and 3.1.2?

It was probably a mistake, but Eddie chose the moniker PowerDiver.

Squelch and quiver are the most obvious changes. You now learn flags of items when they activate. So if you put on a ring and jump into a pit, it is marked whether the ring provides feather fall. You will screw up at first with the change to the store interface. I think those are the big ones.

Drops are much fewer, including money, and egos are overpriced, so selling is more important than it used to be.

There are lots and lots of small changes. Inspect everything.

Only one notable exception I can think of - and come to think of it he was a lot of the impetus for people moving over here

Another big deal is proportional healing, even for mage CLW spell. People have beaten M using only CLW to heal.

That is actually major deal. In addition to increased healing CCW are also quite commonplace in temple so you can have very good healing for fights even for non-priesty classes.

I have used phase-door out of LoS, drink couple of CCW and continue fighting -tactic now for some time with my warrior. I managed to kill Gabriel (this time) using that method before I had more than 14 permanent speed (Cubragol&Trickery(+2)&Thalkettoth&-1 from being burdened). I had nearly 40 of the CCW before fight, and 9 after (killed also Azriel and Uriel and who knows how many Archons in the process).

          That really makes things easier.

Note that CCW proportional healing is healing wounds, IE proportional to how much you have been hurt, while healing is still healing proportional to your max HP and 300HP min.

            This is a good exception.

Most annoying thing I find is some important artifacts are significantly different. Biggest are probably Narya doesn't have rNether and Vilya doesn't have rDis.

But OTOH Narya does have ESP, which more than compensates the losing rNether couple of times over. They also have useful activations now.

Heh, I think most of the artifact changes made them significantly better like Dal-i-thalion and Cammithrim but it's annoying because I end up trying to wear Narya for rNether or brand bolts with Cubragol.

Uniquename, did you use to be part of the Angband community some time ago (under a different moniker)?

                    A.

No, but I've been lurking since 3.0.1.

Many thanks for all the useful pointers. You were quite right Eddie (and the moniker seems quite apt, though it does seem to carry the slightly negative connotations of power levelling in my mind - complete non-issue of course) the shop system got me once, but doesn't take much getting used to.

Been playing probably an hour and a half, and will post my thoughts in the vanilla forum
