Yes, the USA has been insanely lucky on fluke goals in the World Cup since '94. Most of our points have come from our opponets help:
'94 - USA had 4 points, 3 of which were from a 2-1 vicotry over Columbia where USA was assisted by a Columbia own goal (and, tragically, Andrés Escobar was murdered for it about 2 weeks later)
'98 - USA had 4 points, 3 of which were from a 3-2 victory over Portugal where USA was assisted by a Portugal own-goal.
'02 - We didn't benefit from any own-goals, but then we didn't get any points, either (0-3), and gave probably the worst performance of the tournament.
'06 - USA had only 1 point, losing 2 and our only draw came against Italy, with the 1-1 tie was the result of an own-goal.
'10 - 1-1 tie against England was a fluke goal as well.

The goal against England was indeed a fluke, but it was a good, hard, and accurate shot. It's not the keeper just dropped it in the goal by himself.

You have those two mixed up. It was '02 when you beat Portugal. You also forgot to mention that your team actually got into the round of 8 where they lost to Germany even though they were the clearly superiour team. Our goalkeeper won that game alone. That game is the only one I remember from that tournament because the result felt so wrong (and because it was the week I celebrated graduating with my classmates
)
So.. make sure you survive the group, if possible in a way that allows a England vs. Germany match in the round of 16Comment

You are right! I did mix '98 and '02. We got a team we knew well in the round of 16 in '02, beating Mexico 2-0. I remember the USA-Germany match well. I thought we tried hard, but the German team physically dominated us, & deserved to win. The US team had good technical skill, but lacked (and still does) the creativity and sophistication that the world class players have. The only painful part for me was an obvious handball by a German player at the goal line that should have given us a penalty to equalize. Yes they did, and with an injury time goal that saved us from elimination. 2 hours later and my heart still isn't beating normally again.......

Looks like it will be another classic European matchup between England and Germany. And also a reprise of last tournament's US failure against Ghana.
Today's US game was a nailbiter! I'm still pretty pissed they didn't let the first goal count (AGAIN). He was not offside! If you're a line judge calling back a goal, you better be DAMN sure you're right. It's not like they were running down the field; they were basically standing still before the pass.
