    Anybody watching the World Cup?

Anybody else out there a soccer fan and watching the Cup games? This is a pretty international group of people.

The Mexico/South Africa opener was a pretty good game. I'm glad it ended tied so both teams can be happy and the home crowd isn't grumpy.

Unfortuantely I will be at work during most of the matches, but I am following the live commentary and watching some video on ESPN3. I hope to watch most of the weekend matches.

My employer is actually showing the games in the canteen and allowing people to watch them during work time as long as they make up the time. Pretty hard to beat that - but then I drew Switzerland in the office sweepstake, so my chances of winning are pretty slim ...

Not really a soccer fan, and the games are on here at midnight, but I did catch some of the first one anyway.

I am being fairly typical here, I think - the Australian way is to complain about how inferior soccer is to every other football code, but still stay up to 3am watching it.

I am also at work during most of the matches, but there are quite a few soccer fans where I work.

Agreed to the above, we were keeping tabs on the game by word of mouth from passer-bys on breaks.

I can't wait to watch the USA vs ENGLAND match. After that, I don't think I'll care much.

World Cup, what's the World Cup? Oh, soccer. No, I'm not watching. It's not that I don't care..... Oh wait, yes it is.

Dennis Miller comically summed up America's dis-interest in soccer and the world cup beautifully yesterday on his radio show. It was short and sweet. Unfortunately, I can't remember enough of what he said to convey it with any accuracy here.

If we had a large footy contingent I would definitely watch that. When I was in Melbourne for a few weeks I fell in love with the sport.

This year's world cup is I believe the first time the US is favored to make it past the first round, which is an awkward situation we're not used to. You never know, we might beat England. While they're not looking, we'll have our team put on Bladeturners and Deathwreakers and deliver a beatdown Arda-style. THERE IS NO RESIST FOR AWESOME.

So it's the football equivalent of 20-20 cricket ?

I didn't bother staying up for *that*.

Soccer IMHO has a single fatal flaw - it's too hard to score. So a game between two evenly matched teams will often turn on something random, like a poor refereeing decision. I would like to see an expected team score of about 10 to 15, instead of 1 or 2.

Note that I don't have a good mechanism for doing this...
