This is still a ranger? Also, is the crossbow a heavy crossbow? Otherwise, I can't explain how it can be better, cause you should have extra shots with the bow, as well. Also, while regeneration is nice, it also consumes food faster, so watch out for that. Oh, and the power displayed on a bow is the power of the bow, the extra power has already been represented.

I am a High Elf. Now I've found armor that protects against confusion so I'm definitely keeping it. Was gonna bring Arvedui back with me, but ran into an Earth Quaker and decided I didn't want to try to kill him and teleport other didn't work on him so I portaled outta there.

Picked up a helm of sustaining (constitution, strength, dexterity) which would mean I could take off my ring of body keeping, except that my current helmet grants telepathy which I think is a real benefit. Of course I now have two rods of detecting so can use that in place of constant telepathy. Decisions decisions. However, if I don this iron helm of sustaining, it also grants free action, freeing up my hands for my gloves of slaying again and also freeing up a finger for a ring of +12 damage for a total addition of +18 damage to my current setup (which is alot given I get 6 blows a round). Maybe that's a fair trade for telepathy. Will try it and see how it goes! This game sure is addicting

Also picked up an amulet of trickery which solves my r-poison problems. Losing Arvedui means losing shards resistance. Trade off seems well worth it tho.

Could you please dump your character to the ladder and link? It'll be much easier that way.

This is a typo right? Can TO fail in V4, is it resistable?

Grotug is playing 3.4 and thus, due to an entirely understandable misunderstanding, posted in the v4 thread.

Grotug, are you sure that the rod didn't fail? As far as I'm aware NOTHING can resist TO, but rods, staves and wands all have a chance of failing (which you can see using the 'I' command). It doesn't drain a charge when it fails (unlike mana with spells) so you can just have another go. Unless you're dead, of course. Apologies if you know all that already.

                And death is pretty bad.

Not at all, well maybe playing FAangband thralls made me tough, but why ever allow surprises to happen ? You have a full set of tools to never allow a monster to hit you, unless you want to be hit. Use it.

Oh, I just invented a cool challenge game: win Angband without ever being hit.

Sorry, I thought you meant that actually being paralysed at dlvl98 with 170hp wasn't the worst that could happen.

Cool! 0hp with no rise with level. Might be tough before you get detect traps, though...

Sounds fun, but how are you going to avoid missle attacks? Seems like you'd have to play in a somewhat boring and repetitive fashion.

I think another neat challenge would be to die with the lowest HP you can. (I.e. maximize the value of (0 - curHP) upon death

I once managed about -720hp from an unresisted Drolem breath (I was blind and fighting using ESP). You could of course get -1599 from an unresisted base element.

                            Why not -1600hp?

Quite right, you could get -1600 if you were at 0hp the turn before.

The point is not to use cheesy stuff, but simply avoid everything with missile attack. Bosses are trouble, they dont fit in the scheme, so either get hit by them, or be cheesy. I thought about this as a more or less pacifist playstyle with rarely monster kills.
