I got to around level 30 on level 1 of Camelot. The important part is at the bottom of the dump:

      Code:
      Unusual Rooms: ON
I killed like 4 things total in R'lyeh. I spent all my dungeon time in GCVs.

Unusual rooms ON = *LOTS OF* OOD monsters at low levels.

so, uh, I was stair scumming the Castle and at one point going down the stairs collapsed behind me. Fine, I found different stairs up. But now I can't re-enter the castle. There are simply no stairs. I went to a few towns, to a different dungeon, then back to where the Castle entrance should be. Still nothing.

Is this intended? if so, how exactly does this feature work? if not, helppppp

Just recall back into the Castle and then find some stairs to the surface.

my whole gameplay approach with this character relies on the existence of stairs

If the approach is - go back to the Castle *only by stairs* and not by recall, then the down staircase to the Castle really should be there. Sometimes you would have to check all screens, 360 degrees, near the Castle entrance for the actual purple '>' to take you back there.

The easier way is to town recall back to the Castle and ascend to surface:
Once you located the up staircase at Castle 20, you should be on the surface with that staircase. That staircase on the surface is permanent and should not change if you go in and out of that area with that staircase into Castle.

The sidescrolling wilderness makes it a littler harder to find dungeon entrances sometimes.

If you can't find the Caste entrance regardless of *look for entrance from surface* vs. *go to surface and re-enter*, you can always send chris the savefile.

This is intended to avoid stairscrumming, you always have a % chance that the stairs crumble behind you. If that happens you cant enter that dungeon anymore from the surface that whole gameplay.

Hmm, which dungeons does this apply to? It doesn't apply to icky caves or camelot. Yet it does for many others.

I understand the intent, but it's a patently un-fun feature. You haven't lived until you've played a char based on GCV stair scumming I may just abandon this character.

You don't have to abandon the character. You can still try the Chameleon cave (lvl 30) or Glass Castle (lvl 40), assuming these have GCVs.

Why would those not collapse? Sorry, away from home computer and can't check poscheng's files. How about anti-magic cave, or anything lvl 60+?

60+ can collapse too, only know for sure that camelot can't collapse.

AFAIK, the Orc cave won't collapse

The Arena dungeon and Anti-magic cave (IIRC) are known to collapse

I just don't think being unable to find dungeon entrances should be an 'end all' to gameplay. Don't forget --we have Mt Olympus. But, this one place is on another level

Any entrance deeper than L19 will collapse with 1 in 14 odds.

Well, don't quit your character over this. I can certainly make this rule not apply when playing with ironman_rooms turned on for next release (which you can nudge me into hurrying if you like).

But if all you want are continuous GCVs, don't you find stair scumming tedious? You can make every vault a GCV with the following change to lib\edit\v_info.txt. Locate the entry for GCVs:
                                Code:
                                N:20:Greater vault (huge)
                                T:VAULT:GREATER
And change the T: line to:
                                Code:
                                T:VAULT:GREATER:DEBUG
Save and restart the game. Use word of recall to regain access to restricted dungeons.

As an aside, the third field of the T: line is a flag field, and the DEBUG flag says to always choose this room when selecting a room template. Sometimes there will already be flags specified in this field, but you can add new ones with the normal C bitwise or operator ( as in FOO | DEBUG).
