Yes. The other simple way (besides invulnerability) is to use (multiple) Runes, which are *way* more effective in Moria than they are in Angband.

Huh, cool! Thx for the info, again. I used about 8 potions of invulnerability with my half-orc rogue to win. It felt cheesy at the time, but I was not about to retackle the game if I lost. I still have the save before the fight on an email account somewhere... maybe I'll go dredge it up.
      You are on something strange

(Rf) resist fire also really helped, lol, also level cap in moria was 40. I had a level 40 priest loved him.

Yes, very much so. Even with a Rune, the Balrog can still breathe fire, so having both permanent and temporary fire resistance (and of course, healing) is important (at least at the beginning of the fight, before you whittle down his HP).

Character race attributes where also different in moria, no high elves dunadan or kobolds. Beej's moria spoilers are going to be wonderful for faithfully recreating the game.

I am keeping the Angaband targeting systems. That was one of the main reasons I am choosing to upgrade moria to make it more playablerather than just download and play.

Keep Angband pseudo-id for now. Warriors would be extremely difficult without it.

I am not putting in any group monsters to start. I do need to make sure the # of monsters and objects are consistent with Moria, because there aren't nearly as many object drops.

Probably. In porting the object list I realized how rare

Yep. On the other hand, the only necessary protections to win are SI, free action, the 4 resists, and 1-2 speed items.

To start, I am sticking with the Angband method here. Lanterns are +2 (no ego-lanterns), and I am going to add the Phial as the games only artifact.

That's now it will start out. Maybe eventually I will add in some NPP store services, but not to start.

I hope so. I have wanted to play it myself, but I can't quite give up all of Angband's UI improvements. So for me to update it just seemed to be the best solution.

So far I have made better progress than expected. I finished all the edit files, and almost of the code changes for Moria object generation. In terms of total progress towards a playable beta, I think I am around 50% there.

a couple questions for any who have advice

I am having bouts of indecision about my two weapons. And two armour items.
And I am wondering which to commit to, and enchant more if i can.

                      Weapons:
                      Mace (DF) (2d4) (+10,+8) [+9] (+2 to stealth) or
                      Two-Handed Sword (Claymore) (FB) (3d6) (+14,+19)

                      Armour:
Golden Crown of Regeneration [0,+6] or
                      Steel Helm [6,+9]

                      Pros, cons anyone?

My armour class is hovering around 100-ish give or a bit depending on the helm and weapon.

Any reason you can't use both weapons? Carry one as a swap for when you don't need the abilities provided by the other.

I have no idea how well-balanced Moria's combat system is, but in Angband I'd take regeneration over a bit of AC any day.

Moria had the "x" xchar slot where you could swap weapons or a digger, wear/wield item slot A weapon and then press "x" to swap weapons and equip the new weapon in the slot, you can then press X to swap between weapons

Yeah i do carry them both. I know about the second weapon slot of course haha. That would be pretty awful if I didnt.
I was just curious what anyone's opinion on which is the better weapon to enchant and use as primary.
Anyway. Ill try the regeneration crown.

It looks like the claymore does a lot more damage....that being said I remember HA (holy avenger ) weapons to be the most powerful in moria. Does the defender give you see invisible? I can't remember exactly but if it does I would go with that as see invisible was quite rare in moria. A shooter weapon would be awesome in moria, but with the target path, and poor inventory sorting with old moria, I always found that very aggravating to manage

In Moria, Holy Avenger does give See Invisible, but not free action. Defender weapons give both. There are only around 4-5 items that give either. I am considering adding rings of free action to give the player a little more options.

In the upcoming NPPMoria, there will be a bow slot just like in Angband.

I am still making decent progress. I finished Moria dungeons and a moria-like speed system. The code is still in alpha-state, but if I can keep this pace up I will definitely have a decent beta within a month.
