I'm not quite understanding this. Are you saying that the "secondary weapon" slot will only be usable by bows (rather than any weapon), or are you saying that the player will now be able to simultaneously wield both a bow and a melee weapon? One of the important mechanics in Moria (at least, IMO) is the need to switch back and forth between a bow and a melee weapon, which helped to make archery much less powerful than it would otherwise be.

This works only if the b) slot is like a "prepared weapon" like in DoomRL, then the x swap key switches between them.

Having Swapping ranged/melee taking time makes the game more interesting. The only ranged attack buff I could see being justified is angband targetting because playing tactics micro to line up enemies on NSEW/diagonalls is silly, esp when they can target you easier.

Have you tried Sil? It's a bit like original Moria. Really an interesting variant

Yes, instead of a secondary weapon slot, there is a bow slot. I find it prefereble to a player acidentally trying to beat an ancient dragon to death with a crossbow.

Switch weapons will still work, only under the Angabnd system they have to be inscribed with @x or something very close to that.

Another way to fix this is to automatically inscribe all identified bows and diggers with
            Code:
            !,
and add check to attack for inscriptions.

Automatic warnings of "you're trying to attack with your ranged weapon!" As a default would be way better than changing one of the things that makes Moria, moria!
Although people who want to win with diggers will have to disable this check, it removes frustration while preserving a fun gameplay element.
If you add "Angband improvements" to moria willy nilly, it'll become Angband!

Good points. Angband, for the most part, started with Moria and just added to it. I never intended to make Angband lite, although I am starting with a pretty good replica of Moria by simply turning many Angband features off and making Moria edit files. The reason for starting with Angband is to capture all of the UI improvements rather than the game improvements.

I am not against replacing the bow slot with a swap weapon, although I would want to do that as a "phase 2" change. First I want to get a good, working and relatively bug-free code base. I still have alot of issues to work through. Some of the small and subtle changes between Moria and Angband involve some major changes to the code.

I am happy to say the coding phase of NPPMoria is done. Now I just will play around with it for a couple days to eliminate the obvious bugs.

Hopefully I should release a playable (but somewhat buggy) beta within a week.

                        3.4. It's in good shape and it's stable. 3.5 isn't stable yet.

I found Moria on a Linux CD around 1995 and played it for a while. Later I was looking for similar games and found Angband. Since then I've been sticking to Angband, but Moria still is great in my memory.

I have just found umoria. it's tough getting started, no-targeting, haggling, no color. who needs to change angband settings when you can just play moria.

umm... any recent ladders. or am I going to be looking at 20 yr old entries?
