Does anyone know a good variant with wilderness in it? I have played z+angband extensively but I want... something else, what are my options?
Looking to find a certain variant with a wilderness.

Hengband and its spinoffs Chengband and Entroband have wilderness similar to Zangband. There's also FAAngband, which has a more "structured" wilderness, though that may have changed recently...You read the scroll labeled NOBIMUS UPSCOTI...

Is there something in particular that you're looking for? Just interesting wilderness terrain? Towns/shops in the wilderness? Do you just like exploring?
Also, are you looking for a static wilderness (i.e. doesn't change from game to game) or a random one?Comment

I am looking to explore a large wilderness and find towns and dungeons etc as well as having access to the dungeons from towns, essentially I want a pretty similar scenario as Z+angband but I want to try out the other variants on the market and see if I can find something more to my liking as I am a picky bugger ^^Comment

As FAangband maintainer I should of course recommend that, but there may be others that would suit you better. In particular Hengband/Chengband/Entroband, Xangband and maybe Portralis seem like possibilities; if you want to go back to older variants, then maybe Kangband. One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

I've tried almost all the variants recommended here, and I found FAangband to be the only one I really liked. (It's REALLY good )
My issue with Heng/Cheng is that it is really complicated, lots of details, and it seemed like too much of a divergence from V for me to get used to. FAangband is a nice midpoint of complexity between those and V, I think. I might be able to give Heng/Cheng a run once I've played FA for a while!
Although I think Z+ is sort of similar to those variants (quests? etc) so maybe that's not an issue.
Wilderness is probably the feature of FA that I enjoy the most. Very well done by Nick!Glaurung, Father of the Dragons says, 'You cannot avoid the ballyhack.'Comment

You can also try ToME.PWMAngband variant maintainer - check https://github.com/draconisPW/PWMAngband (or http://www.mangband.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=9) to learn more about this new variant!Comment

ToME as in tales of maj'eyal? I have played the hell out of that and I LOVE the uniqueness of it however I got burnt out I think the thing I am looking for most is a non instanced(?) wilderness, like how in cheng the wilderness seems to be sectioned into screens (might not be, I havent played much of it) whereas z+angband has a giant wilderness you can just run around in with dungeons guarded by masses of enemies strewn across it and a wider array of classes, and I know I am probably asking for too much here lol.Comment

Methinks he meant the classical ToME, Tales of Middle Earth
