Oh, I see - makes more sense that a thief is more interested in the (selling) value of an object, then some details of its magical properties.

Does this apply to scrolls as well?
I read a "sense magic" on an "Robe {unusual}", and it turned into "Robe worth 450 gold" {unusual}" .. isn't that what "value magic" is good for?

I must admit the ID system of UN is confusing at times .. I never really know if it's a bug, a feature or just me being dumb again
But it's definitly the most interesting ID system I've found in any rougelike

      - Message "Your rod of **** has charged" interrupts (STRG-S)earching, like a monster in sight does !
      Berlios 15685

      - Monsters shouldn't move over harmful tiles if there's the possiblity to evade: Berlios 15686
On Barrow-Downs I heard something "shreaking in pain" several times, while I was fighting a Snake in a doorway I retreated into. Then something died. When I looked around the corner some turns later a Giant Black Frog Corpse lay beneath the doorway, behind it 3 unlit braziers (in a line of several lit braziers):
      Code:
      #...............#
      #.0.0.0~0@0.0.0.#
      ######### #######

      - "?Magic Mapping" does not map corridors made of "Open Vents" Berlios 15687

      - Speed display and (strg-s)earching display on the same spot with bottom line display..: "Searching -8"

      - Rod of Light says it has range 8, but it lights up 9 tiles; Presumably because neighbouring tiles are lit up as well, so not only the neighboring ones to the left/right, but the one in the beam direction is affected, too. Btw., that range seems quite low, compared to monster detection range and other variants ...

Sense magic 'strongly' pseudo ids any kit that you can normally pseudo id in the same way...

Note that there's actually a weak and a strong result for pseudo id - {unusual} is the weak result (if an item is interesting - either good or bad) and the gold value the strong result for thieves...

          Thanks for the spoiler !
Sadly, I have to report another ????? problem:

          - Missing info upon (I)inspection: IDed (shop service) "Tabard (Spiderthread) worth 3035 gold pieces [3,+7]" shows only "... weighs 7.5 lbs. When thrown, it does 1d1 blunt damage. It increases your armor class by 10. It is a useful ego item. You can apply runes to it or enchant it with additional powers. It was lying on the floor on dungeon level 7".
          According to the edit file, it should have IGNORE_ACID | IGNORE_ELEC | IGNORE_FIRE | IGNORE_COLD | RES_SHARD | ANIMAL | ... shouldn't that show up when IDed ?
Btw., Res_Shard does not show up on the char info, either ...

edit 2: Actually, reading ?oLegendLore seems to give me the missing info piece by piece. Is this intended, and am I confusing variants again ???

So the description should have said: It cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, or cold. It gives resistance to shards. It marks you as an animal. ?

I'm guessing 'ANIMAL' means SLAY_ANIMAL in unangband.

                Wrong guess.
DSM has the "DRAGON" flag, while weapons show the usual SLAY_XY flag .. so yes, wearing a spidersilk tabard marks you as an animal
Or at least, it should, AFAIU.

                  Some more little problems:

                  - Missing thrown weapons seemingly trigger checks for coatings !?
                  "You miss the Rot jelly.
The Rot jelly is immune to poison.
                  You have 6 Daggers (1d4) <Poison-coated> (n).
                  The Dagger disappears."
                  Berlios 15683

                  - Area indicator of traps overwrites walls and doors ...
                  Berlios 15684

                  - Monsters seems to either avoid traps set by the player (thief), or sometimes get "stuck" and don't move to attack the @ which is only 2 tiles away ?!
Already reported: Berlios 15382 and 15562 (duplicate)

                  ... on the other hand ... :

                  - Monster can trigger pre-set traps in the dungeon ?! How did I miss that feature from ADOM in *bands ... nothing more fun than have a drove of centipedes stumble into a gas trap ...
Worm masses make a nasty mess, though

                  - Why do allied monster leave after a short time ? Found 2 "charging" baby dragon eggs, figured they could hatch when fully charged, so I picked them up and carried them around. Both hatched after some time, but the baby dragons left after (rough guess) 200 turns. Am I supposed to feed them, or to heal them instantly if they get wounded, or what?
Btw., having a baby dragon follow me around is totally cute .. reminds me of Tome ...

                    - I found a set of leather gloves (0d0) [1] {unusual}; it displays the damage dice

                    - Don't have a clue how much this involves, it would be very nice if {normal} things should auto-id to +0,+0, and most importantly {normal} arrows should stack with +0,+0 arrows of the same type.

                    - Messages like "You see a stick" or "You see a stump"; extra space between "a" and object

And the list goes on *sigh*

                      - Enchanting a "Dagger (1d4) (+1,0) {coated}" to (+2,0) deleted the {coated} label.
It does show up as coated upon (I)nspection, though. Looks like this happened because I tried out "Kamikaze Faerie Blood" as coating, which did not give any <LABEL> because I don't know what it does (Poison, Disease, nothing, etc.): I checked again with a Dart (1d3) (+1,+0) <Poison-coated> {coated}, and it turned to (+2,+0) <Poison-coated> {coated}.

edit: Sad news - the labels seem to vanish all on their own at times, even from wielded weapons, with no (dis-)enchantment involved. At first I thought the coating had worn of, but trying to apply a new coat got me the message if I wanted to remove the old one, and inspecting the weapon showed a coating as well.
Re-applying coats on primary and secondary weapon resulted in a label only on the 2nd weapon, while the primary stayed without any label. Could be related to dual-wield speciality, haven't tested that up to now.

After playing a while, the issue with {average} arrows not stacking got worse. Turns out that you end up using 3 arrow slots for the same arrow,

                          arrows (+0,+0) ; bought
arrows (+0,+0) {average} ; found then used until ID
                          arrows {average} ; found recently

At the least, it should remove the tag from the middle set and do a stack check when the autoID kicks in..?

                          - quick thought: do gloves show damage dice because they can enhance hand-to-hand, maybe?

                          - all rings pseudo ID {unusual} ; Even later I found a ring of slow digestion {unusual} ; Is there a purpose to that, or a bug?

                          - Bumping into vine-covered walls is annoying ; asks you what you want to pick up.

My lvl 14 test character dies to the Dunlending agent - 2 stinking cloud attacks take me from 120 hp to -7 - crap.

                                OT: Dear Mr. Mack

                                Dear Mr. Mack,
it's the second time you criticise me, first for my writing style, then for my layout style, both within a rather short timespan. Before I look at the personal implications this means for me, let me point you (and everyone else who inadvertently gets drawn into this discussion) to the fact that none of those posts, save the AAR, which is a special case I'll explicate later, is directed directly at the casual reader, but first and foremost at Andrew Doull.

Andrew, I'm pretty sure of that, is completely capable of speaking for himself. So if he thinks my posts lack in either courteousness or polished layout, he'll have little trouble to let me know either directly here in this or another thread, or via PM. But he has not done so up to now.

                                On to the technical part:

I'm using primary colours in the AAR, because the MiniMap I provided must be so small due to forum settings, that more "discreet" colours will not stand out enough. Therefore I'm going with Cyan, Lime-Green and Yellow for the map markings and -accordingly- the chapter headlines.

As for the other threads - I checked with another PC which uses a different graphics card (even brand!) and a tube instead of a LCD display, and I found nothing which really hurts someones eyes. I have corrected 2 possible issues in the pre1-thread: the font size in that one posting, which turned out slightly exzessive on smaller screens (sorry 'bout that), and the thin magenta script in a later post. Btw., what could cause a slight annoyance there is not the magenta colour itself, but the combination with the thin standard font, depending on screen resolution.

In this -and other- feadback threads I use DarkOrange to mark catchwords/-phrase for the single issues to make them stand out from the bulk of the text, which often includes examples or personal comments. This is because I know from personal experience that you're often in great trouble if you have to go back to old postings to find some special information you know it's buried somewhere. Forum and browser search do not always help here, especially if you only have a vague memory of the exact wording.

If I use "primary" green, or magenta, it's for later edits to postings which already have been answered/read/"buried in the past" - either because I have resolved issue on my own (green) or I just was too dumb (magenta). Obviously, to draw the attention back to something that already has been looked at, you need a somewhat stronger stimulant, or the added information will be overlooked.

I don't think my colour usage -save the two issues I corrected- was so excessive as to be able to hurt anyones eyes, though.

Quite contrary: If I would use the more "gentle" colours, the text would either get hard to read because of missing contrast vs. the background ... :

.. or the catchwords/-phrase would simply not stand out enough to be recognisable in a split second:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Aenean quis purus vehicula ligula mollis lacinia. Nullam porta mi diam. Now if any of these are easily readable, or stand out brightly on your screen, I'm pretty sure you have both the contrast and brightness controls turned to max on you monitor. You should consider that they aren't there because they're superflous - the manufacturers would be more than happy to save another 50c on production cost by hardwiring the settings, I'm sure.
So if you find some slight colouration of forum text hurting your eyes - and mind you, we're not speaking of a abominations like this - wouldn't you think it would advisable to check your monitor and maybe your graphics card settings?

Ok, lets have a look at the "personal" part:

At first let me say - I'm not a native english speaker.
That means, I'm wasting too much time already on readable spelling, understandable -not correct- grammar, or simply finding the "right" words. Inevitably, I'll make mistakes. Let me assure you that I do not intend to sound harsh, cynical or sarcastic, unless I make it pretty much clear I do. What, on the other hand, might seems excessive to someone else then, but there's little I can do 'bout that.

Second, doing all the WAD-reports (quite a good percentage of things "reported" is actually working as designed - UnAngband has grown quite a bit more complicated than the standard variants, yet the documentation has not kept up...), eats even more of my time all by itself. This means, I'm often typing things in a hurry, and make more errors. I simply mark the text and hit the colour button, but I don't check back if in this special case on this special thread/side/whatever the result might be less than ideal.

And now I had to waste another hour or two on this reply - you may have simply send me a PM, but you preferred to discuss things in public, so I felt Andrew and this thread / the other readers deserved a more lenghty reply, just in case anyone felt like you but didn't speak up.

If that's the case, I seriously beg your pardon - and ask you to let me now via PM, because I don't want to derail this thread even more.

                                Stefan
No, I don't have a clue 'bout C, and I'm not starting my own variant.
                                Never. Ever.
