How does vision work?

I understand there is a lighting system. However I just had a situation where I was 7 or 8 spaces into a hallway when I saw a Kobold appear at the end. When I took a step forward it disappeared from my view, so I was thinking that it had gone back around the corner, however when I took a few more steps forward I ended up meeting it head on.

Does this have to do with lighting or is there some other mechanic going on? I would think that if I was able to see the Kobold down at the end of the hallway I should have been able to continue seeing it as it approached me?

Probably it was coming from a lighted room and was lit by that; once it stepped into the corridor there was no lighting, so you couldn't see it any more.
