    Phase other spell?

Might be fun for one of the casters to get a 'phase other' spell. A cheaper, earlier version of teleport other. Probably would be better suited for a pure caster since less than 0% fail rate on such a spell would eventually mean death to the caster.

As a more common and shallower device than teleport other it could be handy (and fun), too, in ironman games and allow for risky diving (if you get a few rods of phase other with a short recharge time (say, like 8 turns) then you can play a foolhardy game of trying to keep phasing away dangerous monsters while getting into vaults. It would be the type of thing that would eventually get you killed but could buy you some time and allow you to at least have some chance of success when taking on scary vaults (and certainly be more practical in the early game when there are things you can't handle but aren't necessarily instadeath breathers). Plus, it would be sort of entertaining until it failed or you continually get lucky.

I'd very much like the basic idea, but as presented, I'm afraid this could be heavily abused with making a knights-move-anti-summoning corridor. With 0% failure, it'd basically guarantee zero damage taken against any non-digging/phasing monster, as long as you'd have good ranged attack.

At least I can envision abusing the hell out of this spell.

True, but that says more about the the problems with asymmetrical LOS than about phase other, I think.

FAangband 1.4 has this. It works OK.

I think it could work here, the question is where. Frog has multiple similar mechanics. Some brawlers can hit to push the enemy away. Dragons may flap wings to move all adjacent foes away. Also beam of gravity is there. Definitely nice with more tactical choices.

The Rift spell had this effect when it was introduced in 3.0. The effect was reduced shortly after to a 1-in-3 chance since it could be abused too much.

grotug: there already is such a spell and it has a saving throw for a reason.
