isnt gothmog always awake?
ive never ever seen a sleeping gothmog... O_O
I think you might be right. The thing with these cells is they are enclosed on two sides with permanent rock, which perhaps affects how he can respond.
I never find Gothmog too tricky. The only uniques I hate to fight are wiriun and Qzllluuppp (sic). Ironically King Q was in this monster hotel (although I couldn't see him with detect life) but because I'd got him trapped in his own little cell he was easy to kill and couldn't summon a mountain of hate on my head.

Anytime I play a paladin I make *sure* to track down King Q and Single Combat his sludgy pile of grossness. After all the times he's brought hordes of monsters on my head with other characters, it is incredibly satisfying to murder him while he sits there and does nothing.
Also, the basically free endgame loot is nice too.

In this jackpot of a greater vault, awake nexus Q is the worst Q. Quylthulgs are worth one banish in more open greater vaults, they can really make those tricky.
I once killed myself this way in my end fight with Morgorth. I was low health, getting overwhelmed and desperate. It was crushing because I still had about six potions of life left. Like many things in Angband, it's a lesson that makes you stronger.
Seriously, you must have already been on low health to die in this vault. I only ever lose around 200hp when I clear a vault the quick way
