Selling items in town isn't possible, is it?

    Hello folks!
I have just run Angband for the first time, hardly reading about the game before.

First thing which is unclear for me is whether it's possible to sell items or not.
I don't know if I want to hoard items which seems to be useless for me to the town.

I hope you aren't easily offended by not-very-clever topics. I just try to be social.

No selling is the default - so it is probably what you have in your current game - but you can switch an option at birth that allows selling. The no sell options comes with increased money finds in the game; most people these days prefer it.

      "most" is like, 5 people.

      1. BEFORE you start your game, during character creation, press "="
      2. look for "disable selling" and set it to Off
      3. enjoy Angband THE WAY GOD MEANT IT TO BE PLAYED

      4. kill stuff, get loot, recall home, sell goods, buy neato gear.

So I conclude that the total number of people is 10.

Even in no-selling mode, you can use stores to identify things, by "selling" at zero gold. You then have to buy it back at full cost, if you actually want the item. But selling cursed objects, and other useless objects with unknown runes is a good way to ID things.
I try to do this for scrolls once I am deep enough, to save certain extremely valuable ones.
For absolute beginners, selling maybe a good choice, because money drops are initially pretty small, and you tend to have inventory space available.
But later on, inventory space tends to be more valuable than gold. In the late game, I rarely have more than 2 free slots

I like the idea of selling rather than just getting larger piled of money, but I still play with no selling because the romantic idea of bringing treasures back to pawn off is actually tedious.

Constant refrain of confusion from new players. Defaults should suit the people who don't know how or why to change the settings.

There are tons of things that new players ask about repeatedly, no selling is only one of them. I see no principled method of selecting which ones are more important than another in explaining beforehand and which ones are just part of the learning curve.

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

Just my anecdotal experience from the people I've introduced the game to and my time on Angband.live. I can't think of a more common question from first time players.

Only if they are lucky enough to have someone to explain it to them. Otherwise they're at the mercy of the help menu!

Now that a link to angband.live is in the official page too, I do think a new players do have enough sources of information to ask about things like selling options. Without something like 'mellon' password - a thing that postponed my participation in this forum for quite some time.

Selling is what it is in V. You love it at first and, after some experience with lugging junk in town, turn it off and never look back. I'm one to talk, I know.. Heck, I'm having hard times giving up selling in frogcomposband myself!

If there should be more hand-holding when it comes to birth options, should birth options be there in bold letters in character creation, or what?

PS: One of the weirdest behavioral patterns I've noticed watching roguelike players in action, is to see them hoarding cash and NOT spending it, when something useful shows up in a shop. Because a jackpot will eventually appear later in some shop and then the player suddenly doesn't have the money. If he spent money on something that gives immediate benefit and a jackpot item suddenly appears in a shop, I get blamed for telling his money should not be saved for later if an instant upgrade is available.
