Back in dungeon after 6 years

    Hi,

back in the dungeon. A lot have been changed, already took a warm bath in lava pool.

I'm descenting *very* carefully, since I dont remember much anything about the game any more. Had some luck with equipment drops and I'm currently at 1800' doing stats gain.

I'm relying heavily on zappers and OoD and avoiding melee a bit.

Anything I should be worried about <2000' ? Equipment advice also welcome.

I started playing pc-moria/umoria back in the 80's but never actually beat the game, so I've some high hopes for this one :-)

I got 100% saving throw, but unfortunately it does not prevent me being blinded all the time.

    Some additional questions:

    - how to increase font size on various terminals (1, 4, 5)
    - when to ignore wands and staffs of hold/stun/scare/slow monsters?
    - how to move screen earlier when going near border (currently the screen moves when I'm 3 squares away from the border .. also don't like to center continuously)
    - will 100% saving throw guarantee me 'free action' ?
    - is there a weapon to undo granite, or do I need a digger (missed a vault for not being able to dig in..)
    - since I cannot no longer identify potions or scrolls, are there still any really nasty ones (like potion of death)
    - does immunity for acid, fire and cold protect also your gear (potions, armor, scrolls)
    - do I get better disarming traps by disarming traps, or should I just ignore the ones that are not on my way?

      Speaking from my own experience...
      1) Slow Monster is great. Un-resistable negative speed on your opponent is a wonderful thing right to the end. The rest... meh.

      2) The heavier the weapon, the more effective a digger it is. That said, a Shovel, Mattock or Pick are best for digging/tunneling.

      3) Personally I test all potions/scrolls in the dungeon (generally in a nook on top of some stairs when I'm healthy and ready to leave the level). I believe all of the truly terrible potions/scrolls have been removed so it's just a matter of being prepared for whatever inconvenience may follow.

How to change the font size will depend on which front end (Windows, SDL, SDL2, X11, ...) you're using. For the Mac front end, make the terminal active that you want to change and then hit command-t or select Settings->Edit Font from the menu bar to change the font.

To manually change the center of the view you can use 'L' in the original keyset or 'W' in the Rogue keyset.

Skimmed dump... Looks like you have 3 pts of Wis above maximum. Don't ignore potions of Intellect and Nimbleness.

Ctrl-L will allow you to manually center the screen whenever you'd like.

Immunity will prevent damage to your items from whatever you are immune to. If you just have resistance, then the items are still liable to damage/destruction.

For traps, it usually depends on what type of trap it is and how detrimental it would be if you spring it. For example, if you find a trap door but don't want to go down a level then disarm it. On the other hand, if you find it when you are looking for the stairs, you can intentionally spring it by starting with "W" before walking into it.

100% saving throw will prevent you from getting the affects from distance attacks but not from melee attacks so you can still be paralyzed without Free Action.

His question was “will @ fail disarming a trap less often if he practices disabling traps” and I believe the answer is no; but that @ improves on disarming traps when gaining character levels (though early on in the game disabling traps gives a worthwhile amount of experience).

There is one potion that can end you if you have no means of satiation. The other dangerous one is sleep potions. There are no potions of detonations anymore.

Stun monster wands aren’t bad either. I start ignoring scare monster wands at around 2000’. Stone to mud wands are handy as they can be recharged by dropping them in the red store and buying them back. This is true for slow monster wands, too.

Missing shard resistance at 2500' . Should I be worried about that? Could trade rBlind for shard resistance..
What would be the priority resistances after acid, cold, fire, lightning, poison ?

Stacked a pile of rod of slow monsters, they turned out great! thx for the top Houded!

The damage cap on shards (& most high elements) is 500, which is less then your hps. I'd rather rblind, as you can't use scrolls while blinded. The order of high resists is pretty arbitrary. You'll want rdisenchant if you melee the end bosses & rchaos is great for stopping hallucination. rsound is good too have once you're at wiruin's depth as it is fast, breathes often, doesn't show to telepathy. Resist shard is mostly nice to have, I'd put it close to the bottom.

I used the center_player option for this, so that I'm pretty much always centered.

O/P mentioned a preference to not use the center_player option so I was offering an alternative.

True, something between always_center and center_when_its_almost_too_late would be nice :-) Using CTRL-L, but would be nice to have this automated somehow.

always_center is the automated, I'm afraid. I don't like it either, but some players do.

Since it sounds like you've been using subwindows, you could try with no subwindows; that would allow more rows and columns in the main terminal, so you wouldn't run into the edge of the screen as often. Also means fewer distractions

You can also try scrolling the map with L instead of centering it with ^L; that way you can be off-center and have more visibility in the direction you are interested in, though the interface is a bit touchy at times about what it allows.

The Complainer worries about the lack of activity here these days.
