Consider how much you would cry if the fire hound/baby red dragon breathed and your scroll of acquirement turned to ash.

There's no guarantee how useful the item will be, sometimes it's trash (to your @) sometimes it's gold.

    >>where do we find these imaginary rings of the mouse with +4 DEX and -5 damage? DL75?
try -10 (+1), which is what you find normally before damage rings start to drop.

Well, I don't know about you, but I found one in the black market before I entered the dungeon with one blackguard @ - it was -5, (+2, +3) but it was still worth wearing.

The beautiful part was that it was practically free.

Freezing monsters means that you are attacking with cold (so monsters that resist cold will suffer minimal damage).

Regarding acquirement scrolls, I normally read them as soon as possible (unless I buy one from the black market in which case I read it back in the dungeon). Holding on to it longer, especially in the dungeon, risks having a fire attack burn it up.

ok so, let me explain something.

there is no one best way to play angband. however, there are known combinations. So, you totally can use a dagger and wear 2x reckless attacks, or you can instead wear ring of mouse and get super-high stealth and never wake any monster. You can have a mage rush to INT 18/100, or you can use rings of escaping and only shoot Magic Missile.

There are very, very few items which have little or no use. Wands of Stun are good in some situations, not so good in some others. And what's best is really what equipment is useful to the way YOU play the game.

If you dive really fast and go looking for great items, you will want as much stealth as you can, because deep mobs can kill you just by looking at you. If otherwise you grind low depths, you will want as much damage as you can.

The only real limit is your inventory space.

PSA: to-hit bonuses in Angband are nearly useless.

I found a second damage ring, which adds a little damage, going from 203 to 211, over reckless attacks.

Is it worth replacing for that little boost, or is the 4 to hit bonus on reckless attacks more important?

This depends heavily on your character. Read it if you're struggling, save it for deeper dungeon levels if you think your're steamrolling the dungeon. A warrior that has found early artifact dagger may want to read it later and deeper, for example.

Then again, there is no correct answer to this question. At least I don't have it. It's pretty much same deal as "should I save those early uniques to be killed later in hopes of better death drops". Level 30 tends to be a lot better place to kill orc uniques than level 20, but the possibility of an instant upgrade is always tempting.

Found a ring of strength 2, but dropping it because the 8 damage and reckless attack do more damage.

OK, I just read the acquirement, dlvl 33. Looks good!

    Lotharang, Battle Axe (14,13) >+3? ??

Similar base damage to current weapon, dagger Nimthanc (10,12), but activation cures blind/confusion every 5-7 turns.

Dagger does 200 to non-cold monsters, Ax 200 to Orcs, dagger better on that.

The dagger says it freezes monsters when I hit them, but I'm not sure what that means. It's not as if they stop attacking.

Update: after identifying runes and learning attack speed, now the base damage on the axe is 203, orcs/trolls 288.

Angband is about figuring out what to not fight as well as what to fight. Most e's just are not worth it

Most wands - not worth it for a fighter - TO and slow maybe stun - confuse never works well for me.

staves - detect evil, teleport, mapping, Det Invis (if you don't have see invis)

rods - mapping, detection, light, illumination, TO, slow <- this is where you want to me

Early, I like to wear a Open Wounds and carry a Dig (now I'm just wearing both) until damage comes along.

btw - blackguards who find rings of the mouse (0, -5) (+4) are usually very happy with them for the stealth/number of blows combo.

    Huh. I'd tried s and S. But I'm on 4.1.3.

It seemed to just say he had prot from fear without mention of level 30.

    Thanks.

also, a piece of advice. Your ranger can cast Magic Missile. This is VERY useful.

press = and select keymaps. select create a keymap.
    press F1
    type paa'$ and press enter
    select save keymap

now every time you press F1, you will cast MM at the nearest mob. Slime pits, Death molds, Eyes, all things that will not attack you directly (even Druji if you know how to approach them) can be killed with MM and patience. Not only it's super useful, but it saves you precious arrows; you break 1 out of every 4 arrows you shoot, so if you shoot 40 arrows, bam! that's 10 arrows gone.
