Looking for Survival Advice (Angband 4.1.3 Mage)

Looking for advice with my current character, as I have had very few get this far, and I would like to make my best attempt at not dying. Ladder is here for reference:http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=23334

Been trying to gauge setup based on Fizzix's LP run, and trying to learn strategies from there. Finally picking up on the importance of Teleport Other and Detection spells seems to me the reason I've gotten this far.

For reference, the only other characters I've ever had get past Dungeon level 30 were 2 other mages, one gnome who died at Level 38 to a dread and one half-elf that died at Level 50 to a Winged Horror (It breathes. You die. I didn't know it could do that!) That mage mostly had two Rings of Escaping to his name and nothing else, as I didn't realize I should be moving on to higher damage spells and should be picking easy high experience targets to keep me going up in experience.

The other two were a dwarf warrior who died on DL 58 (It breathes, you die. Turned out to be Shelob, Spider of Darkness, I remember it clearly because I never saw her.) and a Hobbit Ranger who made it to DL 63 at level 29, which seems fast. A drolem, don't remember how, but I can take a guess.

Anyways, with what I have, can I just keep spamming detection and plunging deeper into the dungeon? Or would I be ill-advised to do so? Any other tips with what I have on hand at this point?

Your constitution is frighteningly low. Maybe wear a ring of Constitution? I would not go deeper than DL58. Things start to get nasty at DL60 as Osse and Arien the Terribles starts showing up then among other things.

DL58 should be deep enough to find some things you need like !constitution, !augmentation,rPois and speed (though speed is much more likely to be in a vault than outside a vault).

You have a good char going. Don't compromise on stealth. It makes things so much easier when your MAXHP is low. If you can find <+3> or <+4> stealth Ring of Mouse, use it. Your stealth is at Superb already but the more the better.

Overall I get the impression that you are pretty good at tactics already, but you don't necessarily know what monster does what. The game is much, much easier once you know most monsters strengths and weaknesses.

Another thing: single poison resist (temporary or not) is not enough for a fragile character to take a full strength breath attack. Drolems, Shelob, Swamp Wyrm, Bile Demon, etc--all can kill you even with the resistance spell. I am not sure that +3 permanent speed is worth the loss of rPois. And yeah, 183 HP is insanely fragile at that depth.

Starting with 10 internal CON is likely to kill you. Much better to start with somewhat more balanced stats--a little less STR and INT in favor of CON doesn't matter to DL 40, but starts mattering a lot once you are into stat gain.

            advice

A wise man only follows himself ... thats my advise

But honestly, i gladly let you participate in uncounted games of Angband 4.1.3 i played as mage. Actually i suggest to suicide this character and start over with another race.

            The reason: mathematics
=> High Elves have the worst XP path of all races. And mages, in contrast to other classes unluckily gain power with every level. Each level decreases fail rate of high level spells by 3 percent. And the best attack spell available in the Tome of Power is Mana Storm, which requires max Int and will still be slightly above 10% fail rate with level 50.

So the real life playing time required to level this high elf to level 50 will be much longer than starting new and level a human (or gnome, my favorites) to level 50.

Ok, but i guess you like this one ... haven't made it so far with other chars yet.
About 99% of all deaths are caused by
            (a) stupidness in combination with lazyness
            (b) one hit breath / spell attacks which can cause
elemental: 1600 hps unresisted, 500 mana unresistable

To make it to the endgame you need speed of around 35+ and all resistances and 500+ HPs.

So the high elf mage is looking for "grinding" targets right now i guess. Vrocks and Mumakils ... about 3K per kill. Neither have too much damage output and with +10 speed from haste you should be able to kill them fine with acid bolt.

Basically the savest way for unexperienced players is to stay at around DL45 and grind for XP and stat raising potions, until INT and CON are maxxed at their natural stats. With the resistance spellbook you should do fine then until very deep levels. That is indeed boring and even slower than to dive down. Depper down, DL 70+ there are potions of augmentation (which boost all stats at once, making it quicker, there are double potions, and static targets which give 30K XP per kill .... Those static targets can be attacked with LoS from the 2/1 disctance. 2 spaces straight away, 1 space sideways behind a wall. So you can see them, but they cannot see you. Then they are easy kills ...

When it comes to spellbooks, basically you only need meteor shower from CL 40 on to boost acid bolt, and once you got Mana Storm, you don't use anything else at all anyway.

Keep yourself hasted ... be smart ...

If you run today, you can live to fight another day

            Good luck with this character!
            Blondes are more fun!

imho DL58 is way too deep for 180hp.
I would be hovering around DL40 to grind stat potions.
