I just WoR'd to 1800' into an area with no door. The 3 square area is 2 steps West, just North of the stairs. Fortunately I had a good shovel and was able to dig out to the North. Image is attached, hopefully the shape of the area will provide a clue as to what happened, if this action isn't a feature.

Sorry, I thought I'd replied to this. The left part seems to be the interesting room 'Crescent'. My best guess is that the tunneling code got confused by the room shape - as it also seems to do outside circular rooms. There's actually a bug for this - #2117 - but it's sporadic enough that I put it off...One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

Thanks for the explanation. I'm not really bothered by this bug, if you aren't playing with Lose Artifacts you always have the option of recalling. I can remember in the 2.x years, if you had really poor searching you might get trapped until you happened to dig out a door.Sorry, I thought I'd replied to this. well...

1. recall into a pit.
2. try twice to teleport - no effect.
3. check equipment for NO_TELE effects.
4. quaff !Enlight ...
turns out the entire level consisted exclusively of this pit and a huge-ass "town" vault, so the teleport had nowhere legal to place me.
